ruph123··on Tesla FSD Beta 10 veers into pedestrians with illegal right turn
So from Googling, Open Pilot is more a fancy HUD and camera system that assists the driver but leaves all control with him/her? Did not follow Hotz for a while and the last thing I remember was that he was also just working on another full self driving startup.
ruph123··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
AppImage works perfectly fine in nowadays. But I would be totally fine if it would simply say "Ubuntu" than "Linux". That is really all I'm asking.
ruph123··on Bespoke Synth 1.0 – open-source software modular synthesizer
Another instance where "Linux == Ubuntu". At least regarding the dependency install script which is just a bunch of "apt-get"s. Sad that it has come to this.
ruph123··on Please don’t theme our apps
Which other mainstream operating systems allow to apply global themes?
ruph123··on Old photos of Bedouin nomads, 1898
The reason I heard is that it took a long time to take a shot and was expensive. So you did not want to mess up a shoot with a smile. Better go for the safe option and put on your RBF.
ruph123··on Apple's bright idea for CSAM scanning could start persecution on a global basis
Look into CalyxOS. I am also about to jump ship.
ruph123··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Yet very often they charge restocking fees which is unheard of here. And also these policies are up to their discretion. As you can see in e.g. Walmart’s policy they reserve the right to decline the refund. Better to have a guarantee by having it in the law. Again as stated before, Amazon is known to shut down accounts for returning too often.

E.g.: https://www.wsj.com/articles/banned-from-amazon-the-shoppers...

ruph123··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
This is not a thing. At least in Germany I never once had anyone ask me why I want to return before I could. 90% of the time you already have a return label in the package. Worse case you don’t and you cannot even request one through the website, you send an email and get the label.

I was only ever asked about my return _after_ it was issued by Charles Tyrwhitt after I ordered and returned a good number of items (due to their fit being all over the place). That was fair IMO.

On the other hand Amazon has numerous times shown that if you return too much (or don’t behave due to some other opaque metric) your account can get suspended. Even my account was suspended once, though I am only a moderate shopper and have returned less than 10 items over my 18 years membership. I raised the issue with support and asked why (there weren’t even any returns around that time) and they could not tell me but reinstated my account. Good demonstration of power and a reminder to move away from using kindles.

Amazon returns may be easy until you cross some threshold and end up on their bad side.

ruph123··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
I did not mean that EU laws make returning on Amazon easy in general but that these laws may make Amazon less likely to behave the same in a way they do e.g. in the US.
ruph123··on Amazon refused to refund $7k after shipping an empty box instead of a Sony A1
Maybe the reason for this is more consumer friendly laws? In the EU you can return any* online/telephone ordered purchase within 14 days (among other laws).

*Exceptions are software, digital products, etc.

ruph123··on Tiresias typeface
According to this video which consulted the available research on the topic (and has links to the actual research papers in the description), the legibility of Tiresias for people with impaired vision is unfounded (Can’t look for the specific research right now because I’m on the go):

That sounds really exciting, thank you so much for your work. I'll give it a try. Great new neovim prospects!
ruph123··on Telescope.nvim: Find, Filter, Preview, Pick
Thank you so much for the thorough answer! There is a lot of exciting stuff for neovim rolling by e.g. on Reddit and I am already very happy with 0.5 so far. It is just hard to filter which new neovim/lua project is really worth the time to check out and potentially break your current setup. I will give it a try.
ruph123··on Telescope.nvim: Find, Filter, Preview, Pick
So it’s a fancy fuzzy finder? How is it different/better than fzf? Is it more integrated but therefore less flexible (e.g. less UNIXy)?

I read some early report on the neovim reddit where people complained that it was slower than fzf. So I did not bother looking into it more, also because no one could really explain it well.

ruph123··on System76 Launch Configurable Keyboard
The funny thing here is: The key caps are opaque, so you won’t see all that much of the actual key print anyways.
ruph123··on System76 Launch Configurable Keyboard
Do you mean ANSI vs ISO? I am under the impression that once you produce an ISO keyboard (e.g. with big enter key) any layout just means different key cap prints and telling the software about it. If they don’t even support ISO in the first place, there is no path for international layouts afaik.
ruph123··on Framework Laptop pre-orders are open, starting at $999
Okay but that does not make it better. A slightly higher boost clock on one hand vs a strong octa-core CPU on the other (and this is last year’s generation).
ruph123··on Framework Laptop pre-orders are open, starting at $999
I am really excited for this and consider buying a second gen next year if they support Linux. But $2000 + tax for a quad core is pretty brutal (i7-1185G7).

I got a 14” notebook with a Ryzen 7 4800H for less than 1000€ from a small vendor (Tuxedo).

Hard to choose this as it stands. Still I would support them and pay the markup. Hopefully they can support AMD CPUs in their next models.

ruph123··on Stadia’s VP and head of product leaves Google
The biggest difference (and problem for Stadia) was that you have to buy Stadia games as “Stadia games”. You cannot transfer them out, they are locked into a platform run by a company which is famous for shutting services down rather often. Why would anyone choose Stadia then?

The nice thing about Geforce Now is that you can just run your already bought games on it. Just connect your account to Steam/Epic and you are good to go. You are just renting their hardware essentially.

ruph123··on Mars Ingenuity helicopter mission extended by NASA
This. The two MER rovers were supposed to last 90 Marsian days but instead made it to 10+ years.
ruph123··on Experian’s credit freeze security is still a joke
Its not. Schufa collects negative entries. If you did not pay back loans in time you will have a bad Schufa. To the contrary in the US you have to have “good credit” meaning you have to have participated in the “credit system” and behaved well.

If you don’t have any record: Great for Schufa, bad in the US.

ruph123··on Librem 14 units appear to have been modified by a 3rd party
The forum entry linked in the post has a much clearer image of the weirdly amateurish modifications:

And “Knacker” is also a sausage because it “knacks” when you break it in half. Knack in German has the meaning snap or crack.

> ... yet there are no affordable devices like this.

Watchy costs about $60 [0]. There is also a dude who put together a guide with how to make one yourself and even lists the components [1]. An e-ink display for his watch costs about $10 at aliexpress. (The components are pretty similar, screen likely the same one.)

If it is possible for some dude on the internet to build their own smartwatch and a crowd funding campaign to do it on a slightly bigger scale, why are not more manufacturers doing it? That is really what I am wondering about. The whole "screen supply" argument seems like it is a non-issue. Is it really patents?

Maybe an e-ink screen is just too boring compared to an Apple Watch's OLED screen?

The other question is why are transflective LCD's so rare? Googling for it, literally only Amazfit seems to still make them.

ruph123··on InfiniTime 1.0
As far as I can tell the Amazfit Blip is the latest with a transflective display. If there was an option to install a different OS on it, I would love to use one.
ruph123··on InfiniTime 1.0
Is there any such device with an OLED or e-ink display? All of the above mentioned have IPS panels and things like watchy with an eink display are not really for fitness tracking and don’t have a HR monitor. I wish there was a Pebble in 2021.
ruph123··on The real reason to end the death penalty
Understood, still learning.
ruph123··on The real reason to end the death penalty
> But please, go on continuing to believe Europeans are superior to the rest of the world. I remember that working out really well for you guys back in the 1930s.

That is unnecessarily snarky. The comment I was replying to was suggesting that basically the UK and the other Europeans would happily welcome back the death penality. Which is not true. I only said that "we" - the strawman used by gp - left it behind and made no statement about other countries.

You are the one getting all nationalistic.

ruph123··on The real reason to end the death penalty
> 49% of Brits would support the reintroduction of the death penalty

... for murdering a child. You forgot that part didn’t you? If you pull up the poll if death penalty should be reintroduced for all murderers only 32% are in support [0].

Please don’t pick and choose sources to make an argument which wasn’t even captured by the source. Also please don’t extrapolate to other countries like that. Us Europeans left the death Penalty behind a long time ago. This is not a thing anymore.

ruph123··on Why the United States has the best research universities
Or even more importantly the Max Planck Institutes and Helmholz. Max Planck society is a heavy weight for sure and the co-operation with universities pretty unique as they need each other and are fully public (other than e.g. American private entities like JPL).
