runeofdoom··on Tolkien estate wins court order to destroy fan's 'Lord of the Rings' sequel
It is, for all practical purposes. The court posted the whole thing in an official document.
runeofdoom··on According to Plutarch, Julius Caesar was once captured by pirates
Except the real "Great Man" in this case was Sulla. Caesar was just copying him successfully. Once Sulla had broken precedent, more repeats of his "one neat trick" (of marching on Rome and taking power by force) were inevitable.
runeofdoom··on The camel, the rope, and the needle's eye
As someone interested in the topic but without any particular knowledge of it, any pointers to peer-reviewed literature from either POV would be appreciated.
runeofdoom··on Switch off bad TV settings
Same here. It feels like it takes everything, from classic B&W to modern SF extravaganzas, and turns them all into somebody's home videos.

At the same time, I'm pretty confident that this is a subjective phenomenon. My parents have it on all their TVs and my mother both prefers it and notices immediately if video isn't 60fps or equivalent, while my father says he doesn't notice the difference.

Makes the Space Launch System look efficient and productive by comparison.
runeofdoom··on New Wave Sci-Fi: 75 Best Novels of 1964–1983
If you're seeking weirdness and hallucinatory craziness, I think Peter Watts, Tamsyn Muir, and Charles Stross (among many others) can absolutely deliver.

Such members would be unlikely to support their "I've got mine, fuck you" ideology.
runeofdoom··on The $55M saga of a Netflix series nobody will ever see
There are also fan-made "book edits" of LotR and the Hobbit that purge as much non-book material as possible while keeping th film coherent.
runeofdoom··on Before OpenAI, Sam Altman was fired from Y Combinator by his mentor
If you start thinking that CEOs aren't special and unique, then you might start thinking they don't need to be paid 350 times what the average employee does.
runeofdoom··on The share of Americans who are mortgage-free is at an all-time high
A lot of areas with lower population do not have the requisite internet infrastructure to support remote work. And the ones that do have seen their housing prices shoot up.
runeofdoom··on A Lot of Damage in Grindavík
Purely a guess on my part: concrete or asphalt will be destroyed by frost heave[1] and be difficult to patch well, while pavers will endure it better and are easier to restore.

runeofdoom··on Vela incident (1979)
Much like the US had weapons in Turkey (for many years, IDK if they still are), but those weapons were under US control. (Although if the combination on the safeties is still all 0s, that may be less than completely accurate.)
runeofdoom··on LockBit says it's leaked 50GB of stolen Boeing files after ransom fails to land
Or it could use the Low Orbit Ion Cannon.
runeofdoom··on Why Is It So Difficult to Map the Ocean?
Were the collisions due to mapping error or human error? Afaik, the USN hasn't said.
runeofdoom··on World's largest aircraft breaks cover in Silicon Valley
We must be headed into an alternate timeline. Hopefully it's a good one.
runeofdoom··on The Escapist staff resign following termination of editor-in-chief Nick Calandra
This. Over two decades, I have yet to see new senior management who didn't feel compelled to 'make their mark' on their new territory by changing something significant. Occassionally, they'll actually do something useful, but usually they take something that worked and break it.
runeofdoom··on Earth's blobs are remnants of an ancient planetary collision
Get real human beings to stop clicking on eyeball bait. Far easier said than done, when the bait is ultimately being generated not by other individual human beings, but corporations (effectively slow-AIs or Lovecraftian monstrosities) that can bring far more resources to bear on getting us to click.
runeofdoom··on What makes heavy metal 'heavy'?
Umlauts.
runeofdoom··on Extinct goat was cold-blooded (2009)
I've sometimes wondered if Venus' runaway greenhouse had been caused (presumably unintentionally) by intelligent Venusians in the distant past, how could we find out? What bio- or techno-signatures would we still be able to find? And what possible such signatures would be easiest to look for given the inhospitable conditions?
runeofdoom··on Mars has a layer of molten rock inside
With no buried fiber to feed on, the backhoes will starve.

Musk is in the driver's seat at Twitter. At SpaceX he's a frontman, carefully managed by people who know both him and rocket science.
runeofdoom··on On not noticing rather too many things
Very well put. As someone who has been diagnosed and struggled with it all my life, you've captured it really succinctly.
runeofdoom··on How the creator of Alone in the Dark came back to games
Inadvertent githyanki genital exposure would present at least one contrary example.
runeofdoom··on Swedish union declares strike for Tesla employees
I spent quite a few years working for a company unionized under the Communications Workers of America (700,000 members). Neither of these claims were true then or are true now.

A specific job title would have a wage tied to the agreement, that increased based on years in the title and other negotiated increases. There were absolutely performance bonuses... as per the agreement, not at the whim of management.

Management gets to set a wide scope of performance requirements, and those he cannot meet them lose their jobs.

What I do see is that unions do a good job at preventing arbitrary abuses by management... and management really hates that.

runeofdoom··on FTX thief cashes out millions during Bankman-Fried trial
Surely the FBI agents were cunningly framed by the real Dread Pirate Roberts.
runeofdoom··on The midwit home
We may be in the minority, you're certainly not alone. I prefer physical, tactile controls, especially for my home and appliances.
runeofdoom··on We’ll call it AI to sell it, machine learning to build it
I doubt it's "we need marketing to sell stuff" that engineers hate, but rather the seemingly inevitable "marketing lies about what our product does".
runeofdoom··on Dianne Feinstein has died
There's nothing to prevent an older politician from advising their colleagues, serving on committee staffs or even lobbying. They're not prevented from participantion, they'd be prevented from being elected.
