ruang··on Actionable Ways To Get Startup Ideas
Amazon.com counterexample - Jeff Bezos was a VC before he started a bookstore.
ruang··on Startup School 2013 Notes
Thanks! Definitely makes sense with his emphasis on simplicity.

Tip - I also use Notes and I change the default account to gmail so I can recover accidental deletions.

> A very handy memory device. Make do / dont’s lists. Note all the things you never want to do again

Does anyone know what does Jack Dorsey use exactly? Evernote would make sense although he didn't say so specifically.

ruang··on The World Needs Data Scientists
I skimmed through the intro and just bought the book. Thanks for the rec!

I love the idea of being able to interact with the authors as they write the book.

ruang··on Structured Thinking vs. Going With The Flow
"Machine learning: Explore vs exploit" -from his wiki

Great way to view "data science". Augemented intelligence will usually beat artificial intelligence.

ruang··on Getting a Job in a Top Tier Quant Hedge Fund
Is that why physicists (vs computer scientists) are no longer recruited as actively for quant trading roles?

It seems like all the low hanging fruit has been arbitraged away. I've worked with a Math PhD from Princeton before in prop trading and he always lost money.

ruang··on Getting a Job in a Top Tier Quant Hedge Fund
What is the difference between strategies used in mid/low frequency vs high-frequency?

I understand high-frequency is mostly stat arb but I haven't heard of too many quant funds that do mid/low frequency. I've seen one present before that used small changes in portfolio optimization to get an alpha of ~0.2% over the benchmark but that didn't seem too useful.

ruang··on Getting a Job in a Top Tier Quant Hedge Fund
So quant funds don't use that much calculus? Primarily statistical techniques?

I would guess that might be the case since pure arbitrage no longer works and thus quant funds have to delve into more probabilistic strategies like stat arb.

ruang··on Getting a Job in a Top Tier Quant Hedge Fund
Does this mean that most MFE degrees lead to risk management instead of quant trading?
ruang··on Peter Thiel’s CS183: Startup - Class 13 Notes Essay
Amazing lecture. This is the first time I've heard of anyone solving the problem of avoiding getting stuck at the local maximum.
ruang··on Why do humans procrastinate?
One manifestation of this is to break down a semi-abstract concept such as "finish coding shopping cart" to concrete tasks such as "install rails gem".
ruang··on The Acceleration of Addictiveness vs Willpower, Productivity, and Flow
I take advantage of my addictiveness to getting things done by planning out the next 5 steps so I don't get distracted by new tasks.
ruang··on Are you in a startup career path or are you one and done?
Using investment as an analogy, this is like a barbell strategy. Put most of your portfolio into bonds and put 10% into pure speculation like out-of-the money options.
ruang··on Just fucking figure it out
You could make a 5-minute trailer and put it up on YouTube.
ruang··on To truly become rich, you need to stop acting like it
It's not about spending less, it's about spending your money on the correct things.

People need to spend less on status/signaling goods, and more on creating real value. Spend less on investing/speculating on things you have no control over.

To paraphrase Tim Ferriss: Wealth is what is left over when all of your money and material goods are taken away from you.

ruang··on Ask HN: recommendations for domain registrars
NameCheap looks interesting but do they have an "About Us" section anywhere on their site?
ruang··on How to Identify Your Disruptive Skills
"Sometimes what we learn about our core skills isn't what we want to hear, like the fourteen year-old who is told he's built to be a long distance runner rather than a football player, as he aspires to be"

She seems to be confusing skills (something you can learn) with talent (something you are born with).

ruang··on Being a generalist requires more sleep than specialists
I use Microsoft OneNote to keep track of interesting things I read.
ruang··on Create your own Justin.tv for $199
I would definitely consider buying something like this if it could be built into glasses to look less obnoxious. Additional bonus if a wi-fi hard drive could be added for longer recording times.
ruang··on Being a generalist requires more sleep than specialists
The whole "tradeoff" series of this blog in general is really good for decision making.

It includes:

Some now vs More later

Random vs Determined

Proximity vs Scale

Training vs Battling

Loyalty vs Universality

Sure Bet vs Shot in the Dark

Switching Costs vs Change Gains

Offense vs Defense

*Efficiency vs Predicatability

ruang··on Doing the Board: A simple daily planning exercise is our most important process
An actual picture of this would be nice.
ruang··on Black Swan' Author Taleb: Stimulus Made Economic Crisis Worse
I always felt that Soros was better than Buffet but could never adequately explain why. I like Nassim's explanation that since Soros made more decisions, his outcome is less likely due to luck.

In other words, the more your ability is tested, the more likely your results are closer to the expected value as randomness negates itself out.

ruang··on Cumulative Advantage - Why You Should Start Now
It's interesting to see how long ago the Matthew Effect (aka Cumulative Advantage) has been noticed.

This sociological phenomenon was named after a verse in the bible: For to all those who have, more will be given, and they will have an abundance; but from those who have nothing, even what they have will be taken away.

-Matthew 25:29, New Revised Standard Version.

Nassim Taleb also talks about cumulative advantage in his book Black Swan.

ruang··on The forever recession
I like Seth's phrase 'the forever recession' versus using the term 'secular' - much easier to explain to laypeople.
ruang··on Zynga CEO: "Just copy what they do and do it until you get their numbers."
You can still add value to people's lives by improving on what already exists versus creating from scratch.
ruang··on Schwarzenegger: Public Pensions and Our Fiscal Future
Defined benefits should be outlawed.

If mutual funds and hedge funds are not permitted to guarantee returns, then neither should pension funds.

ruang··on Keys to Being Excellent at Anything
Thanks for pointing out the comments. I was about to dismiss the article as well but there are some great contrarian comments as you pointed out. My favorites:

-Innate talent > Practice. Painful to admit, but better if you can own up to your weaknesses early on and focus things you are better at.

-Extensive practice only applies to single tasks, not complex activities such as business which requires being good at multiple disciplines plus coordinating and understanding the interaction between those disciplines

ruang··on Warning Signs That Your Product Sucks
Reminds me of the saying: the opposite of love isn't hate, it's indifference.
ruang··on Ask HN: All startup websites look the same
In the British version of "The Apprentice", one of the contestants located his coffee cart next to a Starbucks and cleaned up as a lower-priced alternative.
ruang··on Hey, Guys, It's Totally Okay If You Don't Get Rich
Rich, middle, and poor is a false trichotomy.

Once you hit late 40s to 50s, people won't pay you a high salary for a typical line position.

So at that point, you either continue to work for low wages, possibly being shifted within the company to doing sales on commission, being a trainer, or moved to a low-wage country.

Or you are independently wealthy by then.
