rtuulik··on In a U.S. First, New Mexico Opens Doors to Free Child Care for All
Its free at the endpoint for user. That's what the "free" means here. No one is pretending that resources for things like roads, police, firefighting, primary schooling and others come out of nothingness and don´t have any cost.
rtuulik··on Indefinite Backpack Travel
He is a small guy. He did say that same list would take up to 20L of space if you are larger.
rtuulik··on AI won't use as much electricity as we are told (2024)
Its not. For the US, energy use per capita has been trending downwards since 1979. For the developing worlds, increase in energy usage is tied to increasing living standards.
rtuulik··on Basic Social Skills Guide
Roundabouts are a one way road, you don´t need to signal when driving on it. But you do need to indicate when you are leaving the roundabout.
rtuulik··on The purge of German science in 1933
> When did the soviets deny physical phenomena like the photoelectric effect? I believe they had issues with the kind of non-falsifiable metaphysical arguments put forward to try to explain or understand quantum mechanics.

There were many, but the most famous example is probably Lysenkoism, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysenkoism

rtuulik··on SETI at FAST in China
> I'll never understand why China spent so much time and money finding the perfect remote karst for radio astronomy and then built a radio-loud amusement park around it.

Because it is a prestige project for Chinese government. Any science coming out of that is secondary to that.

rtuulik··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
The claim is that Kissinger sabotaged peace talks thus extended the war in order for his guy to win the elections.
rtuulik··on Henry Kissinger Has Died
Kissinger is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands people. They had families. They were real people who died. Death doesn´t absolve someone from committing crimes against humanity. To claim that people should only talk about the good things person did is a serious case of decorum poisoning. Nobody celebrates serial killers.
rtuulik··on Hipólito Mora, vigilante crusader against Mexico’s cartels, killed in ambush
Using drugs is decriminalised.
rtuulik··on Google Pixel Fold
The "tiny hands" joke isn´t funny because Donald Trump has tiny hands, no one cares about that or if it is true.

The part that makes the joke funny, is its origins. In the 80s journalist was writing a story about Donald and mentioned his small hands in it. But Donald Trump is so insecure that even 10 years later he kept sending cut off pictures of himself from magazines to the author, with his hands circled with a marker, to prove that his hands werent small. The fact that the marker was gold coloured was a cherry on top.

The sheer stupidity of this entire thing is what makes the (though overplayed) joke funny.

Some random source with not that many details. https://abcnews.go.com/Politics/history-donald-trump-small-h...

rtuulik··on EU countries approve 2035 phaseout of CO2-emitting cars
For the last 20 years battery cost per kW/h has fallen around 10% average every year. ICE engines have thousands of moving parts driving up the complexity and price, while electric engines have what, 3 moving parts? It is inevitable that the electric cars will take over, ICE engines just can´t compete on price.
rtuulik··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
Do you mean tripwire force? The idea behind them, using your example, is that when the invasion happens, it will kill a number of American troops, whose death will act as a tripwire to triggering full size war. Its one of the methods for deterring invasions.
rtuulik··on Latvia wants permanent U.S. troops, foreign minister tells Blinken
Tripwire troops have been in Baltics for a while now. You don´t need to set up a permanent base for that.
rtuulik··on Culture shock
I think "reverse culture shock" covers it somewhat.
rtuulik··on Iceland almost gets female-majority parliament
Its not the first female majority parliament in the world, its the first female majority parliament in europe.

Right now, there are five countries where there is a female majority: Rwanda(61%), Cuba(53%), Nicaragua(51%), Mexico(50%) and United Arabian Emirates(50%).

rtuulik··on Peter Bourgon: I have been permanently banned from all Golang community spaces
> You might think that just because you're a beta male that chastises everyone on every internet forum about 'muh sexism' to win points with the girls, even though they'll never fuck you cause you're beta, you're immune but this is proof that it is not the case.

wtf is this drivel? Please keep your incel worldviews away from hackernews.

rtuulik··on World's biggest wind turbine shows the disproportionate power of scale
Wind is caused by the sun. In a single hour, the amount of power from the sun that strikes the Earth is more than the entire world consumes in an year. Humans are currently using nearly as much energy, as 0,011% of sunlight.
rtuulik··on Hacker downloads close to 300k personal ID photos from Estonian gov database
Estionian Personal Code number works just as a unique identifying number. American Social Security Number work both as an unique identifying number AND as a verification of identity. Basically its similar to estonian ID number, but instead of PIN1 and PIN2 you have just the SSN.
rtuulik··on Yuri Gagarin: Sixty years since the first man went into space [video]
Economy size tends to shrink, when nearly half your population decides to leave.
rtuulik··on I bought 300 emoji domain names from Kazakhstan and built an email service
> "After large-scale political changes I want there be no changes that might affect me personally."

rtuulik··on Intel outsources Core i3 to TSMC's 5nm process
Core i3 is fanless. Moving to 5nm should help to give them a decent boost.
rtuulik··on Mikhail Devyatayev
According to Soviet penal code, paragraph 58-1, betrayal of motherland, aka treason. Punishable by death or 25+5 in prison camp. True and proper communist wouldn't have let himself be captured.
rtuulik··on LinkedIn’s Alternate Universe
EULA doesn't define legality. That's stated by the state.
rtuulik··on EU pushes for 'right to disconnect' from work at home
Besides United States, Papua New Guinea and Suriname also do not require employers to provide paid time off for new parents. So US isn´t the only country in the world that doesn´t have paid parental leave. Its one of the three countries in the world.
rtuulik··on No More Free Work from Marak: Pay Me or Fork This
Even Dropbox got bashed here for asking money just for linking some hard drives together.
rtuulik··on Big Ass Fan’s Clean Air System
It already is. People are: A) Wearing masks in public and more avoidant of contact with others. B) Getting Flu vaccine much more popular. It has sold out in the country. and C) Lot of people in the risk groups(where largest share of flu mortality comes from), are already dead from COVID.
rtuulik··on U.S. Exits Paris Climate Accord
I don´t know why people overvalue Musk an Tesla that much for reducing emissions. When I ran the numbers last year, a single city in China(Guangzhou) was enough to reduce emissions more than entire Tesla sales, just by replacing all of their busses with electrical ones.
rtuulik··on The stock market and economy have parted ways
What head start in driverless tech? Right now, Tesla isn't even among top companies developing self-driving car technology.

Also, it's would pretty naive to think that governments would allow a single company to have such sort of monopoly like you describe.
