rradu··on Cash Back Credit Card Comparison
Barclaycard Arrival Plus missing from the list, it's my go-to card. I recommend it to everyone.

* 2 points for each $1 spent + 5% bonus on redeeming (effectively 2.1% in cash back)

* 70,000 points ($700) on signup with minimum spend

* $89 annual fee, waived first year

* No foreign transaction fees

rradu··on 'Dislike' button coming to Facebook
"+1" seems like a neutral enough option that endorses the sentiment of the post, without ascribing an emotion to it.

Except Google+ is already using it.

rradu··on Google search for “blink html”
Kind of awkward given that Chrome's new rendering engine (which has branched from Webkit) is called Blink

rradu··on StackMob is shutting down
We saw this coming when they announced that they were acquired by PayPal a couple of months ago, and read this line:

"When asked if StackMob will continue to operate as normal, he said it was too early to tell since the acquisition just closed today." http://venturebeat.com/2013/12/17/paypal-acquires-stackmob-t...

That was dead giveaway that they'd shut it down. We instead chose Parse for a project we were just starting, and it's worked out pretty well (except for the bugs they've been having the past week which don't allow us to create new columns or deploy).

rradu··on T-Mobile Rocks
T-Mobile simply doesn't have any data coverage outside of major metropolitan areas. If you're someone that travels outside these areas, you will be unable to use your devices for anything but calls and texts.

That's a big caveat that should be mentioned.

(If you never leave the Bay Area, for example, then T-Mobile is a logical choice. It works well for me 98% of the time here.)

rradu··on Hands on with Apple’s Budget iPhone
At the end of the article they pitch an Android phone they made that's "based on the design of the next iPhone"

So that's about how much you can trust the legitimacy of these pictures

rradu··on Ubuntu for phones
Swiping from the edge of the screen is not always easy with a protective case on your phone, as it impedes your ability to do so. Pretty annoying problem that I haven't seen that considered in many places.
rradu··on Android can be beautiful
I don't think that's true. Some of these apps use elements from the Holo UI themes that are distinctly Android, and still look beautiful.
rradu··on Terms of Service; Didn't Read
All the ones I really care about--Twitter, Facebook, Amazon, Apple, Google--don't have a class yet (what does that even mean?).

Regardless, this is great for a quick summary of what you're agreeing to (or already agreed to).

rradu··on Svbtle is hiring to build the future of news and opinion on the web
The benefit is mostly for the bloggers.

They get a UI which is custom-designed to focus on writing and little else. Dustin Curtis explains it here - http://dcurt.is/codename-svbtle

rradu··on Romania Has The Fastest IPv6 Adoption Rate
Worth noting that Romania also has the second-fastest Internet speeds in the world - http://www.techspot.com/news/45566-us-ranked-26th-in-global-...
rradu··on Boston Bar Buzz-Kill
Agree with your first two points, especially in the comparison to NYC. They're just not comparable from the outset--NY is way bigger (469 sq miles and 8+ million residents, while Boston is 90 sq miles and 600,000 residents).

But I'd say bar closing time is a real issue. I hate having to end my nights at 2, especially if I have to cab it back anyway because the T isn't running.

Actually, that's what I'd say the biggest issue with Boston is--the T service. Not only does it suck when it is running, it doesn't even run when I need it the most. The MBTA is very poorly-managed and many hundreds of millions of dollars in debt (very few actual improvements to the system are done because of this; it will take the MBTA until ~2050 to pay back all its debts under the current structure assuming it incurs no other expenditures)

rradu··on Why I will always love RSS
> I strongly believe the contemporary fetish of liking and sharing cheapens the way we consume our information.

It's not necessary to like, retweet, etc in order to consume the content. If all you want is to click on a link and get to an article, then that's all you have to do.

> Don't get me wrong, I do see value in community driven content, but there's also a lot of dirt and sensationalism.

Then curate the people you follow / subscribe to on your social networks. You have full control over the posts you see on Twitter, for example, especially if you create lists to only include accounts that tweet out new articles for a given blog or newspaper. Works just like an RSS feed, but it's integrated in the social product you use anyway (speaking from my perspective, at least).

> This forces me to absorb it all, even though most of their content doesn't go viral. This liberates me from feeling the urge to be connected all the friggin' time, plus more importantly, there is a gold mine of wisdom to be found in the non-controversial content out there.

Being forced to absorb it all and not miss a post is liberating? I often feel the opposite--that I need to disconnect and just accept I can't read everything on the Internet.

rradu··on Facebook Unsocial Reader
This doesn't work on Yahoo links, only on Guardian and WaPo links from what I can tell.
rradu··on Instagram for Android — Available Now.
Same here. Was on my phone, but it wouldn't show up in Play Store app search, only on the web interface. Since there's no mobile web version of the Play Store, I had to navigate the desktop version using my mobile device.

Really poor downloading experience overall--took 10 minutes to get an app which I don't think is nearly as good as the iOS version. It's missing blur functionality, the filters don't seem to be as effective, and there are WAY too many unlabeled icons which you have to tap to figure out what they do.

rradu··on * { box-sizing: border-box } FTW
Somewhat related is the ability to do calculations in CSS3, allowing you, for example, to subtract pixels from percentages.

rradu··on Boing Boing will go dark on Jan 18 to fight SOPA
By blacking out, do they mean actually removing all content for that one day, or just something symbolic like applying a dark theme on their site?
rradu··on Infographic examples, ca. 1920s
I went to the London Transport Museum that chronicles the history of the city's mass transit system. It's chock-full of these types of posters from Transport for London, and also delves deeply into the design strategies throughout the different eras. It's worth a visit if you're ever in the area.
rradu··on Don't Be A Free User
Do people just like paying for things?

If a company can find a way to make money off ads and keep the product free, I'll gladly take that over paying a subscription fee.

rradu··on Microsoft UI has officially entered the realm of self-parody
On a related and more positive note: Microsoft also released a preview of changes they're making to the actual copy/paste process. And it's kind of cool.

rradu··on Show HN: LazyMeter is the only to-do list you'll finish every day
I'm a little confused by how this works. The introduction just confuses me more - http://blog.lazymeter.com/tour/introduction/

The stop sign stands for "save" and "unscheduled"? Pause is "planned" and "scheduled"? Huh?

I just need a simple daily to-do list, and http://teuxdeux.com works for me because it is really simple and clear. I like the direction LazyMeter is going in, but I don't like having to learn and remember all sorts of symbols and what they do.

rradu··on How Plan B found the Droid I was looking for
You can install applications on Android devices by logging in through the web interface and buying them. The next time the Android Market app syncs with the service it will see it has been bought and will download automatically.

So not just anyone can install things to your phone, just whoever has access to the Google account associated with your phone.

rradu··on Poll: Do you use AdBlock?
Why does everyone on HN seem to be so anti-advertisements? I read of people willing to pay money out of their own pocket just to use services that would otherwise be free and ad-supported.

I don't disable ads, mostly because many sites I visit frequently integrate the ads into the design quite well, and without them the pages look too sparse. I also don't like the idea of a program filtering what I can and can't see on a page.

rradu··on FaqMe? FaqYou
Usually for me fonts in Chrome/Win7 look worse than they do on FF5/Win7. But in this case, they both render the text as in the OSX screenshot above.
rradu··on FaqMe? FaqYou
Looks fine on my Windows 7 machine in all browsers but IE9. Although the yellow selection background with white text color is an odd choice.
rradu··on Facebook Moves Into Its New Campus [Photos]
Looks kind of like the old one, but with smaller enclosures.
rradu··on The case for and against the Oxford comma
I'm a big fan of clarity and non-ambiguous statements. If using a serial comma is what it takes to maintain that clarity, then so it shall be.
rradu··on Firefox 5 is now officially released

rradu··on Twitter introduce the Follow Button
How is this different than the follow button used on @Anywhere? http://dev.twitter.com/anywhere/begin

EDIT - It seems the flow is a little different. The user doesn't have to connect to the site first; it's just a one-click thing if you're already logged in. Pretty cool, except it seems a little buggy if you have SSL enabled on your Twitter account.
