roselan··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
Pirates! is a fantastic game. What I find fascinating is that some games like Diablo, Dunes II or Doom spawned a whole genera, while other fantastic games could not find a worthy successor. I'm thinking about Syndicate, Lemmings, Defender of the Crown or North & South (god the laughs!), and many others.
roselan··on Elevated error rate across multiple models
for me it's

API Error: 529 Overloaded. This is a server-side issue, usually temporary — try again in a moment. If it persists, check https://status.claude.com.

roselan··on Show HN: Hacker News, but every headline is hysterical clickbait
These headlines really sound like the glorious The Register of Old, before the suits showed up and murdered it.
roselan··on A flat pricing subscription for Claude Code
This is a great report. Using a claude.md like that is honestly genius.
roselan··on UCSD: Large Language Models Pass the Turing Test
I'm surprised there was no human tested for a base reference point. I'm pretty sure some of us would not pass the test held by another human.
roselan··on A design flaw in the Windows 3D Pipes screen saver pointed out by a customer
On my very first job at the turn of the century, I remember I was by a client seating in front of a server, looking at a black screen waiting for something to happen, highly doubting the claim of the client.

"It only works when you guys are here". Yeah, right.

Already 3 coworkers had to deal with this but couldn't find anything, this was more than strange. So I asked them to yell as soon as something happen.

15 minutes later my wandering thoughts were interrupted by Pipes materializing itself into existence. Oh. And for that day I was the hero.

roselan··on Boeing wants FAA to exempt MAX 7 from safety rules to get it in the air
If you turn them on when it's not raining, it explodes.
roselan··on Total Commander
As many here I'm in love with Total Commander for a long time and it was my first purchase.

I find equally amazing that it's a one man shop. Christian Ghisler created, maintains and supports this application for 30 years (initial release: 29th Sep 1993).

I have boundless admiration for this kind of dedication.

roselan··on Joins 13 Ways
I still like to have a unique id field per table. It helps logging and it doesn't care about multi fields "real" key.

However I keep an unique index on the string value and more importantly point integrity constraints to it, mainly for readability. It's way easier to read a table full of meaningful strings rather than full of numerical id or uuids.

roselan··on Midjourney v5 can do hands
Another reason I saw was that models were trained on 512x512 "portrait" images including very few hands. Added to the inherent complexity of hands, this throw off their generation.
roselan··on ChatGPT passes the 2022 AP Computer Science A free response section
Has it been trained on HN comments??
roselan··on FINRA Orders Record Financial Penalties Against Robinhood
Where does this amount go? Back to Finra members?
roselan··on The UK’s pursuit of the perfect pitch changed football
In addition English clubs were the first to solve the hooligans problem and as such were the first to remove "prison camp" like fences between the pitch and public, giving games a fantastic atmosphere.
roselan··on Microsoft in talks to buy Discord for more than $10B
I went to the website and my first reaction was literally "wtf is that shit?"

Why should I drop discord? Why should I create an account? Why should I download the app and not test in browser?

Even at the bottom: > Ready to try Guilded? > It's easy and free.

If there is a try, there is a catch. (maybe not but on the web it's implied nowadays)

This is not appealing at all.

I'm pretty sure the product is good but your "marketing" sounds completely off to me.

roselan··on Google Stories
google++

That's what popped in my mind when the title ("Stories meet their widest audience ever").

roselan··on TSMC and Google push chipmaking boundaries with 3D 'stacking'
Wasn't it simply a marketing stunt?
roselan··on Virgin Hyperloop Has Invented the World's Crappiest High-Speed Rail
I'm surprised the vibration shown in the video was not addressed at all. I thought maglev trains, without friction, would ride smoothly even when accelerating.
roselan··on Just how fast is too fast when it comes to web requests?
I use jquery ui "highlight" effect as visual confirmation for action completion. It's a background easing animation, basically it "flashes" before fading out.

It might not be fancy but it's simple and helps.

roselan··on Dual AMD EPYC 7742 Crushes Quad Intel Xeon 8180M's in Geekbench 4
AMD cpu and gpu are in playstation and xbox, and I guess that won't change next generation. Game devs optimize perf for console first I believe, so it might favours AMD in games too, albeit indirectly.
roselan··on U.S. Changes Visa Process for High-Skilled Workers
With children staying with their parents into adulthood and earning a wage, we might even speak of 3 wages per household.

This might be compensated my the raise of monoparental households.

roselan··on Childhood's End: The digital revolution has turned into something else
Ah, stand alone complex.
roselan··on Open Location Code
In some places it can be -1 or 2 indexed so that a building can have more floors than legally specified.
roselan··on Twilio to Acquire Sendgrid
That, and ses attachment size limit is a joke.
roselan··on Is there a fix for impostor syndrome?
After 20 years as a programmer with various employers/clients, I noticed the impostor syndrome when I was alone on projects (or in small teams). But when I was working with big teams in traditional fields like bank or retail, I felt something more akin to the Dunning-Kruger effect...

When alone, I compare myself to people in the videos I watch, People like Hickey, Carmack, Crockford, etc. I can't handle a candle to them! But when in BigCorp, intertia is massive, people souls have long been sucked out, and you feel shackled. This make you believe that you can accomplish way more than the median person (which is of course probably wrong).

roselan··on Why Does “=” Mean Assignment?
What does prevent : to become the assignment operator of a language? It's short, and quite "explicit".

x: 2

roselan··on Ask HN: Examples of great landing pages?
CodeKit reviews stand their ground too.
roselan··on “Pinterest needs to be removed from Google IMO”
I don't want to do that each time, plus pininterset.in or .br will takes it's place.
roselan··on EU wants to require platforms to filter uploaded content, including code
It would be if it was public, but most of it isnheld behind closed doors.
roselan··on Security Researchers Publish Ryzen Flaws, Gave AMD 24 Hours Prior Notice
What shocks me is that most mainstream media report it. It's on top of techmeme, and all major names are linked. sigh.
roselan··on Solid aims to radically change the way web applications work
"This site can’t be reached"

ironic...
