rongenre··on Why Pascal Is Not My Favorite Programming Language (1981) [pdf]
In the 80's, I put a Z80 card in my Apple 2, just so I could run CP/M and Turbo Pascal. This.. wasn't that unusual.
rongenre··on Threads Are a Bad Idea for Most Purposes (1995) [pdf]
Raw threads are really hard to program correctly, however sinking parallel code into an executor or queuing framework tends to really reduce complexity and in a lot of cases get all the cores working.
rongenre··on An Adult’s Guide to Social Skills, for Those Who Were Never Taught
Non-paywalled link?
rongenre··on The University Is a Ticking Time Bomb
Khan Academy, not Institute.

Topical because a big push of academic libraries lately is information literacy.

rongenre··on Dog insurer: 'jumping, running, slipping, tripping, playing' not covered (2016)
Pets can get treatments that aren't yet approved for humans - if you've got the budget, there are vets who can do.. whatever.

On the other hand, I had a vet tech friend who said that most people would opt out of treatments that cost more than $200-$300. That's how much they value their pet.

rongenre··on Almost everything on computers is perceptually slower than it was in 1983 (2017)
A powered-off Apple 2 or C64 could be operational in seconds. We're nowhere close to that now.
rongenre··on Kotlin vs. Java
Nope.

rongenre··on The corporate poo patrol is coming after your precious toilet time
That does it, I'll bring my own toilet to work.
rongenre··on Kotlin vs. Java
Well, more to the point - bugs / LOC is remarkably constant in real code across coding languages, so one of the best things you can do is reduce LOC.
rongenre··on Two standard alcoholic drinks a day no longer safe, health officials say
Regular checkups and lab work at a minimum. It doesn't nullify, but it mitigates and it can give an early warning when one's habits are becoming a health problem.

This should be available to everyone and it's a tragedy it isn't.

rongenre··on Uber and Lyft Suggest the Days of Cheap Rides Could Be Over
Autonomous vehicles in cities aren't even close. And if they exist, then all the capital and operational expenses of ownership - which they've been fooling drivers into paying -- are theirs.
rongenre··on Ask HN: My company wants my side project. What can I do?
Visit a lawyer. It'll be a couple hundred $. Ask them to explain what your rights are - it's not just what's in the contract, it's how it'd be interpreted under applicable law, and you have to do a cost/benefit in terms of cost of exercising your rights vs. how valuable it is.

If a couple hundred is too much, you just did the cost/benefit and decided it's not worth it.

rongenre··on Scaring People into Supporting Backdoors
If I believed in god, I'd say that mathematics is indeed a gift from the all-powerful.
rongenre··on Today’s Top Tech Skills
Good applications tend to get the database right first - since you can always re-write the mid-tier code relatively easily. It's pretty much essential to any developer.

Further it's a ridiculous superpower if you're not a developer - it's so empowering for anyone on the business side with questions to just go look in the db.

rongenre··on Java's Cover
Probably want to add 2001 to the title.
rongenre··on When your data doesn’t fit in memory: the basic techniques
Yeah log(n) would be the space to hold the digits of the counter. Presumably (unless things got super-silly), this would be dominated by the buffer size for the line being read.
rongenre··on Reference Checks Can Go Wrong
My understanding of Google is that they're ok with false negatives because they consider false positives to be far far worse.
rongenre··on Uber Sinks to New Record Low as IPO Share Lockup Expires
Trader proverb: "Markets can stay irrational longer than you can stay solvent"
rongenre··on Tcl: Everything Is a String
Everything is a string including the comments -- commenting code actually degrades performance!
rongenre··on A Prenup Is the Latest Must-Have for Tech Startup Founders in Love
That's how child support works: completely independently of marital status.
rongenre··on Ask HN: Would you switch to a 4-day-a-week schedule if you could?
This is something I'd pursue once I hit my retirement targets.
rongenre··on Perl is dying
Perl has a well-deserved reputation as a "write-only language".
rongenre··on Federal Judge Upholds Harvard's Race-Conscious Admissions Process
Clearly the university business is ripe for disruption.
rongenre··on Uber CEO calls business 'sustainable' amid huge losses
With driverless cars (if it happens) they're suddenly in the business of massive capex.
rongenre··on Uber CEO calls business 'sustainable' amid huge losses
Seems reasonable you could devolve Uber and Lyft into

1) Market makers matching drivers and riders with an open API 2) Multiple apps for drivers and riders which handle maps and payments

rongenre··on WeWork’s Adam Neumann Steps Down as CEO
There's almost no barrier to entry to become a recruiter.
rongenre··on Andreessen Horowitz Returns Slip, According to Internal Data
At a certain level, having the returns be uncorrelated is a lot more valuable than total returns.
rongenre··on My father was IBM’s first black software engineer
I never see it as thinly-veiled. Just-world fallacy is pervasive.
rongenre··on Rent control will make housing shortages worse?
Having gone through an eviction in SF, it's not rich residents, but residents who don't want to risk a 5-figure judgement against them and an adversarial relationship with a landlord.

If I didn't mind the financial outcome (because I didn't have the money in the first place) I'd have hung on for dear life.. instead I took the settlement and found another living situation.

rongenre··on A Reflection on the Departure of RMS
RMS has all the resources he needs to get an Asperger's diagnosis and appropriate therapy.
