There's also a version for OS X/Windows/Linux. It's just called TIS-100 (no p).

Sponsor here. Relapse. It's okay. You managed a fake amulet; Why not the real thing?

You can play* or watch games in progress by:

$ ssh nethack@alt.org

It's also available as a standalone program you can run on your own machine.[1]

You can follow milestones, defeats, and victories at #nethack@freenode. See NAO[2] for more information!

* NAO currently runs NetHack 3.4.3.

And for anyone unfamiliar with NetHack and its classes,

"As some may know, Terry Pratchett was a fan of NetHack, dating back to the time that we introduced the Tourist class which was openly based on the Discworld novels he penned."

roghummal··on Japan's hidden caste of untouchables
The way I see it, it comes down to external vs. internal threat. As campy as the terrible interdimensional creepy things are, they are a clear external threat to the people of Earth. Making Dr. Manhattan the fall guy internalizes the threat as he is-was "of us".

With Dr. Manhattan as the patsy you get some superficial solidarity while every nation tries their hardest to recreate him--to obtain their own WMD+/God. With the terrible interdimensional creepy things humanity faces a clear external threat; Unite, people of Earth, for the Universe will fucking eat you.

Maybe the monsters could've been done in a way that wouldn't have people laughing at their implausibility. Using Dr. Manhattan destroyed the message. The film's ending wasn't worth the sacrifice, IMHO.

roghummal··on Japan's hidden caste of untouchables
The film ruined the ending.

>Not that working at something you want is automatically bad, far from it, but it's not the only way to enjoy life. One day I hope we can see that being a slacker can be a noble profession.

I have some documentation you should read: http://www.subgenius.com/pam1/pamphlet.html

roghummal··on The White Man in That Photo
Here's what I read on Wikipedia:

>Despite Norman running qualifying times for the 100 m five times and 200 m 13 times during 1971-72, the Australian Olympic track team did not send him, or any other male sprinters, to the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich, the first modern Olympics since 1896 where no Australian sprinters participated. (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peter_Norman)

Did no one represent Australia in the events he would've participated in?

I humbly suggest that if by some horrible twist of fate you had to work on games instead of "proper" software, you would quit programming.
roghummal··on 90% of People Don't Know How to Use Ctrl+F (2011)
Middle mouse button? I only have to deviate to ^C, ^V when the applications are... not really native.

I just pasted this comment from vim to chromium this way.

* Doesn't cover cut-copy-paste, just copy-paste.

roghummal··on 90% of People Don't Know How to Use Ctrl+F (2011)
90% of people using a computer right now do so because the computer provides something they want and what they want can be achieved with the mouse/touchscreen, at a reasonable rate for them.

Click this. Swipe that. Tap out a facebook/twitter post. Gratuitous use of autocorrect. These are the reality of that 90%.

Don't let your impatience lead you to treat these people poorly. Let them learn by example. If you're sure they'll see the value in a shortcut then go for it but back the fuck off if they don't respond well.

roghummal··on 90% of People Don't Know How to Use Ctrl+F (2011)
It actually 'hurts' watching someone 'hurt' watching people not use the shortcuts that person knows.

>They will fundamentally never understand the idea that it used to be hard to know something.

It's still hard to know things, but it is much easier to look things up.

It's also easier to change the meaning of things when nobody knows anything.

I'm just riffing here but maybe the reason we're stuck on *nix is because it came from a time before The Cloud, subscription software, sharecropper software, etc. It was made to make you more productive; Not to make you #<whatever> of #<whatever> user of Super.os.

OSes weren't worth a whole lot; Money was made on the hardware and the applications. How do you make people productive? Give them an OS that enables productivity.

Unix succeeded because AT&T didn't recognize the value of what they had.

roghummal··on How to Write Unmaintainable Code (1999)
In my experience, it's less about reading code on paper than it is the other thing you mentioned:

>then they annotate it with a pen while thinking about whatever problems they are solving.

Paper and pen offer a lot of options you don't have in vim (or emacs/notepad.exe/etc ;)). Circling, doodling, arrows, underlining, furiously scribbling...

>So... your link agrees with what jogjayr is saying?

... yes.

And I believe the "smoking tax" punishes the poor.

You haven't shown that it doesn't; I haven't shown that it does. What we've established is that taxing smoking doesn't stop smokers--Until it's too high a cost to pay. For the poor.

If you think reducing from two packs a day to one and a half packs is a meaningful reduction, enjoy the sensation. That's all you're getting. Savor it.
