rocky1138··on Ask HN: Whatever happened to exploring the internet?
It's still there. It's just not popular. I spent quite a few hours on IRC when Freenode imploded earlier this year.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WASP-76b

Though it's not Earth-like, we have already got some data on exoplanets using spectroscopy.

I meant four pictures. I've edited my post to clear that up (hopefully). Thanks!

PSA: Click the image to see the full images. There are four images in total.

I wonder why they show a cropped photo in the article.

rocky1138··on Facebook-owned sites were down
A couple of years ago, an admin at Hacker News asked those of us who are just reading to log out because their system is architected in such a way that logged in users use more resources than anonymous ones. So, if you're feeling altruistic, log out of HN!

I feel the same way in the modern day about Processing.

rocky1138··on OpenTTD 12.0-RC1
Yes, though I sorely miss OpenTTD's "close window with right click" option when going back to Chris Sawyer's version.
rocky1138··on Kape Technologies buys ExpressVPN for $936M
Mullvad is great. No conflicts of interest, just a happy user.
rocky1138··on 17B life years could be saved if air pollution was reduced to WHO standards
The fourth largest coal plant is in Taiwan.
rocky1138··on Sri Lankan teenager builds solar-powered tuk-tuk from scraps [video]
I'd love to get a bit more information on it, such as range, charging times, battery chemistry.
rocky1138··on D2X-XL – an OpenGL modification of the classic video game Descent 2
Lots of fun in VR, too.
rocky1138··on Ask HN: What huge mistake did you make early in your career?
Ah, self sabotage. I know this all too well.
rocky1138··on Windows 10 nagging users with Bing advertisements (push alerts)
The most egrigious offender was the Google+ and YouTube integration. https://johnrockefeller.net/google/

If we chew on enough of these lozenges, will our teeth merge into one, curved megatooth?

Perhaps in the future there will be a layer added to this pill that first dissolves the plaque.
rocky1138··on Setting up a Raspberry Pi with 2 Network Interfaces as a simple router
Hey, thanks! I might actually use this for another project.
rocky1138··on Setting up a Raspberry Pi with 2 Network Interfaces as a simple router
I use a similar method to share Internet with my Tandy 1000 via an old laptop I've used as a server for years. LAN via Ethernet coming in, network forwarding via iptables, and serial null modem cable to the Tandy. Unfortunately, I don't get anywhere near 750-800 Mbps but 6 Kbps :)
rocky1138··on What3Words – The Algorithm
Slick site, but I'm not able to use it as I'm not in the USA.
rocky1138··on GANcraft: Unsupervised 3D Neural Rendering of Minecraft Worlds
Would having a higher resolution texture pack make for better results?
rocky1138··on The Net interprets privacy as damage and routes around it
Real name and required accounts ruined this. Now, everyone is too afraid to talk. Things were better, on average, when no one knew who anyone else was.
rocky1138··on 68k.news: A Netscape 1.1 makeover of Google News
I would love it if this kicked off a "slow food" web movement where we all built a ton of services usable by retro hardware.
rocky1138··on FileZilla now contains adware if you download from the official homepage
In KDE you can access this sort of thing with the built-in GUI file manager right out of the box. You don't need a third-party app.

1. Open Dolphin (file manager)

2. Right click in the Places section on the left to add entry

3. Type `fish://<the-address>`

4. Click OK

rocky1138··on Rockstar thanks GTA Online player who fixed load times, official update coming
Imagine a world where companies open-sourced their most boring bits of their software so we, the users, could fix the problems we find with them or extend them in new ways without having to rely on the parent company to get around to it.

rocky1138··on MouSTer Brings USB to Retro Computers
I have a home-made, bespoke version of one of these for my ST. Bought it a few years ago off eBay, I think. It works great. It's nice to have an optical mouse.
rocky1138··on Coolest custom mechanical keyboards
I found it frustrating that I couldn't click the images to see higher resolution versions.
rocky1138··on When will virtual reality take off? The $100 bet
You may find Neos very interesting. It's an online metaverse with a turing-complete scripting language called Logix built-in. Here are some demos:

rocky1138··on When will virtual reality take off? The $100 bet
I know I'm late to the conversation, but one of the biggest unreported problems with VR adoption is that it's impossible to show anyone what it is like to actually experience it. You can't share a video or a photo with a friend and have them understand. They have to do it to understand it.
rocky1138··on Death of an open-source business model
Or follow the license and provide their changes for maintainers to merge upstream, making the original project better. Isn't that the point of GPL licenses to begin with?
