robotys··on Rape Culture
tl;dr: Rape culture is human nature. To counter rape culture we need to get a religion.
robotys··on Writers Feel an Amazon-Hachette Spat
Amazon need to increase its profit. The best way without increasing price from the already steep discount compared listing price are have better discount from huge volume publisher. Publisher balk as their profit margin will be affected. Amazon increase price due to no better term. That is purely logical business decision.

However, the extending shipping time as a punishment part from amazon is not.

(Disclaimer: i work for publisher and a writer myself)

robotys··on Make Your Own Grid Paper
And i've just thought about this like yesterday on my own.
robotys··on Am I evil, or is killing patents just plain fun?
Worse, i write "patent" as "pattern". Such a "designer" i am.
robotys··on Am I evil, or is killing patents just plain fun?
No need to think, just look at china.
robotys··on Am I evil, or is killing patents just plain fun?
Why on earth i did not have read anywhere about USPTO officials return a letter to this so called patent troll with simple reply: "Explain this pattern in layman language."

USPTO officials should have the power to inquire pattern applicants about their pattern until complete understanding, not to work alone and try to understand it by them self. It is hard to understand something technical, and it is utmost difficult to try understanding technical stuff with only 'lawyer' language as interface.

The fact is, many of this pattern applicant try to hide their 'Obviousness' of their pattern behind lawyered up and jargon filled language that proven to be hard to understand and open to misinterpretation.

robotys··on How to be a great software developer
Look for passion AND self-control. We do not want somebody who keep using wrong tools for the job.

I prefer to be passionate about tools on hobby project, understand the real implications and usage before commit to use it in project on the job.

robotys··on The Myth of Massed Practice
Malcolm specifically said that "it takes 10000 hours of deliberate practice to achieve mastery."

There are two component here: 1) 10000 hours and 2) deliberate practice.

What op present us are "you can ditch 10000 hours because deliberate practice is enough" but when you go through the article it shows that all test subject were trained for very narrow set of mastery for short time period (bean bag tossing, microsurgey) or very wide set of mastery for long period of time (football play)

robotys··on ASk HN: I Need a Self-hosted blog platform
If wordpress is not capable enough for you it is either 1) what you are trying to do is not within scope of normal web interaction or 2) you have very limited experience using wordpress.

you need to consult a web developer that you trust for these issue.

robotys··on Product / Market Fit is a Trap.
Interesting. From what i understand:

- Lean startup (eric ries): big picture/map for startup

- Product/Market fit: you have found a scalable business model

- Bmc: tool to quickly mockup a business model and its feasibilty

- Job to be done: tool to understand customer problem space systematically.

Now, pick the right tool for the right job.

robotys··on Why have today's designers stopped dreaming?
Nope, but they only keep their dream in the head. Client want other useful design (not dream) right now.
robotys··on Stop Writing Code Everyday
And i thought the article will somehow tell us that jeresig argument to code everyday was wrong.

i genuinely thought that the article should do justice by putting the same effort as jeresig post. Yeah OP argument that "CEO job is not only coding" is not wrong but i expect OP will argue that "code is not the onpy thing developer like jeresig do" based on the headline.

robotys··on Ask HN: What do you do when you're not working/programming?
Teaching high school physics and calculus to neighbourhood kids, play guitar and ukulele, hiking small hill near house and contemplating life once in a while.
robotys··on 528 Muslim Brotherhood supporters sentenced to death in Egypt
This is not a sentence anymore. This is manslaughter.
robotys··on Why We Should Build Software Like We Build Houses (2013)
Yeah right. Meet Mr Client, he ask an architect and developer to build his house, but only need a developer for his software.

Mr Client thought making software is as easy as typing onto computer. It magically done exactly how he think the software should be done, with only limited time.

And limited budget too.

And open to changes too, while still adhere to the same timeline.

robotys··on Software Engineering is a Social Problem
Then the answer to software engineering problems should come from social based solution? What solution?

The argument is good and entails new perspective on this challenge but further refinement is needed to move closer to solution. Reasons aplenty but solutions seems not.

robotys··on Why you should move that button 3px to the left
This comment win.

What frustrate developers/engineers are their code changes need to pass the test immediately. The consequences is immediate. Compare it to design consequences, it seems like an eternity, especially if the design changes never have any test/measure to get passed.

Designer can blame developers when dev cant code their design which is so delightful the sales will improve. But developers cannot blame designer when the sales does not come through from the changes. Sales manager do.

There is test for design and it was called 'split testing'. Unfortunately it is marketers/sales job to come up with the test, not designers.

By these rules, designers should be in sales team instead of product team!

robotys··on How we completely changed our internal comms in one morning (Campfire – Slack)
Awesome product (awesome features, fast and superbly user friendly) combined with splendid marketing site (testimonials, clear tour of benefits) and throw in good timing (campfire no more) will generate buzz and activation like crazy.

Noted!

robotys··on Why don’t software development methodologies work?
This remind me that business is pure gamble, and business people is bad gambler. They want to play but do not want to lose and if they lose they want to blame somebody.

Managing ego and heart is harder than managing a project i think.

robotys··on Idea – An idea that might just end poverty
Islamic scholar defined that any alms can be directly paid to the needy (which also been clearly defined). But in my country ruling, all the benefit of alms donation (tax exemption, etc) is applicable only when the alms is donated to specific government agency.

IMagine the huge sum of money which is different pool than tax money.

Large pool of money will attract attention and political pressure from dishonest individual in power.

And, when the agency is only focusing its effort in collecting the alms instead of distributing it to the needy, then the pool will only get bigger, and be the source of tension within society rather than 'peace of mind' force.

so far there is no 'huge' scandal erupt yet. The key terms here is 'yet'.

robotys··on Idea – An idea that might just end poverty
I meant that if only a small subset of society are honest, then only that dmall subset will do alms, thus the impact of alms to the needy will be somewhat small and ineffective.

And if there is large subset of society not honest and try to pose as the needy to receive the alms, then the system is screwed.

robotys··on Idea – An idea that might just end poverty
Alms tax need 2 ingredients to get it right: culture of honesty and humbleness and also 'distribute to poor' focus of the alms agency.

ps: i am muslim and i pay alms every year. But sadden by the poor distribution of help to the needy.

robotys··on “Don’t Reinvent the Wheel, Use a Framework” They All Say
This is a very important point.

I found it very true that different people learn in different way from my effort on sharing the details of programming and math with fellow co-worker and interns too.

Try make 30 people grab the same details (programming/details) and you will learn a lot about what you teach about and also on how people learn.

When i understand that, i ultimately understand the reason why there is so much debate and on going discussion about some particular details: much of our confusion were caused by lost of context in communication.

robotys··on The Sustainability Agenda in Kanban
I got lost in all the jargons. Or maybe these article is not for me.

ps: great tools like kanban should be easy to implement and easier to understand.

robotys··on On the “Learn to Code” Movement and Its Lies
Good in coding is an effect of good and clean analytical thinking on problem solving. All men in my family are mechanic (13yo the youngest) while i'm a programmer and it shows that both world use the same problem solving techniques and some familiar technical mindset.

Good thinking preceeds technical mastery. Mastery in any skill (which is basically any applied knowledge) can be learnt by apprenticeship for a period of time.

It takes a jedi to train a padawan.

robotys··on Good News You Might Have Missed in 2013

robotys··on PISA : Diligent Asia, indolent West
If we apply the "D people will be boss to A people" rules, then US can be relieve as they will still be the leader to asians.

I believe that the "not so good in exam" type is excellent in another thing aside academic, and that thing usually make them leader.

robotys··on My Biggest Takeaway on 37Signals’s New Book on Remote Work
In case of Marissa Mayers, i think the ban of remote working is more towards trimming their workforce from poisonious group of remote workers that did not perform. They just suck the money out of Yahoo, and many of them are.

I assume remote working will be unbanned in near future if the condition allowed.

robotys··on [dead]
knowledge preceeds creativity. We cannot be creative without knowing the limit.

Aggree on we need more creativity and a piece of certificate does not mean a job.

robotys··on Diary of a programmer with no clue about marketing
Reason dev-ing a software is not that hard = computer is consistent and feedback is instantaneous.

Reason marketing is effing hard (for us programmers) = human is fickle and feedback is sporadic.
