robin_reala··on Raleigh Vektar Restoration (2020)
Unfortunately I got over-excited and submitted this before I realised that there wasn’t a part 2. But it’s a nice investigation of my childhood dream bike anyway.
robin_reala··on macOS Golden Gate Is a Buggy Mess
I’m not a Mac developer: what does the NS stand for?
robin_reala··on Palantir founder purchases large swath of forest in Sweden
Cheapest I can find in Härjedalen with at least 4 acres is this 70 acre plot for 400k SEK or 40.2k USD: https://www.hemnet.se/bostad/gard-harjedalens-kommun-overber...
robin_reala··on Palantir founder purchases large swath of forest in Sweden
That’s a strange map in the article. It makes it looks like he’s bought all of Härjedalen, rather than two orders of magnitude less. It’s still a chunky piece of land, but it’s definitely not that big.
robin_reala··on When did Google get so weird?
If your hammer magically morphs into a saw you don’t keep on trying to hit nails with it, you put it down and pick up a different hammer.
robin_reala··on When did Google get so weird?
I don’t understand how we’re 60 comments in and yet no-one has suggested that the problem is that you’re continuing to use Google despite it changing its core offering out from underneath your feet. If you want search (which isn’t an unreasonable desire) then Google isn’t the place for you any more.
robin_reala··on Improving site performance by shipping more CSS
Those class names surely gzip better than hashes over the wire?
robin_reala··on Show HN: The last day of the dinosaurs, as an interactive painting
Slop, if you hadn’t guessed by the .ai domain.
robin_reala··on Show HN: Ive Sent It – online courier for files, with signed proof of delivery
I can’t get past the missing apostrophe in the logo, sorry. I know that makes me shallow.
robin_reala··on A graphical desktop for the ZX Spectrum
The critical difference I think is deterministic vs non-deterministic. A compiler isn’t the correct comparison, it’s reading out your desired specs to a team member who does the actual engineering work.
robin_reala··on Archiving pirate radio station Kool FM
If you’re interested in the history of Kool and the wider London pirate radio scene I can warmly recommend Fracture’s 0860 project: https://0860.fm/
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
I was described by a slightly mad client as “the Harry Potter of front-end development” after I’d pulled off a particular effect my designer had come up with. (They then proceeded to give the entire dev team Harrods hampers and failed to pay the company when we sent an invoice.)
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
I built a mildly responsive site in 2007 using transparent PNGs overlaying a photo in the header, only for it to turn out that the client’s IT policy blocked the PNG loader. In the end I had to explain to them that everyone else would see the site normally, and they’d have to put up with it until IE7 launched.
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
When working in the public sector in 2016 I had a person seriously annoyed with me for dropping IE6 support when all their libraries (as in buildings with books) were still on it.
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
I was so glad to replace SIFR with Cufon: http://cufon.shoqolate.com/generate/
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
They’re still there for use in forced colors mode. I blogged about this a bit at https://medium.com/flat-pack-tech/ikea-windows-high-contrast...
robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
Sounds about right. Looking back I’d already moved IE7 to “functional” support in late 2016[1] and was planning to do the same to 8 and 9 in the not too distant future.

robin_reala··on CSS Curiosities of the Past
Out of interest, how do you define “old”?
robin_reala··on Do people prefer stories written by AI?
Define art?
robin_reala··on Ask HN: Anyone still coding like 2021? Where do you work?
The real costs are externalised to society and the environment. I assume you weren’t including that in your “reasonable costs”.
robin_reala··on Antiquated HTML Snippets and Artefacts
I’ve used them on Latin before.
robin_reala··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
”We assign a value to your privacy”
robin_reala··on Smartphone makers don't bother to comply with EU repairability requirements
You can see the GDPR stats on https://www.enforcementtracker.com/statistics (scroll to “Enforcement over time” and click on “Total €”). 2018–2020 was effectively nothing compared to later.
robin_reala··on 216M Spy TVs – The LG Smart TV Problem [video]
I mean, I’m not disagreeing, but it’s a bit rich for a site that logs data to 1,745 “partners” to be complaining too much.
robin_reala··on The Highest Point in the Netherlands
Sorry, mushrooms and addiction? Of all the things to worry about with mushrooms, that’s the least likely.
robin_reala··on How Fairphone built the Fairphone Gen 6+
There’s a get-out clause in the law that allows your battery not to be required to be user replaceable if it can last 1,000 cycles while remaining at 80+%. Apple’s phones certainly meet that these days, and I imagine Samsung’s will as well (though I’m not sure if silicon carbide changes that at all).
robin_reala··on US diesel prices hit a record high of $5.85 on average
$5.85 a US gallon? Horrendous, you’re up to 70% of what diesel costs in Sweden today.[1]

robin_reala··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
The fomenting of racial hatred a few tens of kilometres from me? I’m lucky to not be targeted by him and his chosen cause, but a lot of my colleagues are right in his firing line.
robin_reala··on Ask HN: Advice on Migrating from 1Password?
Can I assume that you’re not someone affected by DHH’s abhorrent views?
robin_reala··on Sovereign Tech Agency invests €500k in Flatpak
