robertAngst··on South Korean government to switch to Linux: ministry
What does 'Linux OS' mean?

Various Linux desktop distros?

If so, have mercy on anyone who will be using Ubuntu Desktop for the first time. I hope they aren't afraid of using Terminal, because the internet will shout them down for wanting a GUI solution.

Love Ubuntu server, but could never get into linux desktop.

robertAngst··on Foxconn Still Trying to Tap Dance Around Its Ever-Shrinking Wisconsin Promises
I know most people don't want government to be run with these 'back scratch' promises and corruption-

But those who advocate for more taxation, how do you stop this kind of corruption?

robertAngst··on Blue-collar workers who become white-collar later in life
>This is why an elite education is so valued, because no matter what happens "you still went to Harvard/have a PhD etc."

After working with many engineering grads from top schools and meeting Industry PhDs, I'm disenchanted by this.

Everyone can do math at this level, so it seems to boil down to personal skills, work ethic, and genuine interest.

The trifecta is rare, and I haven't found many. These people arent often at a company for too long.

robertAngst··on Blue-collar workers who become white-collar later in life
>As a delivery driver, people wouldn’t talk to me the same way or wouldn’t ask for advice and stuff. I’m the same person with a different position but it seems like people respect me more because of what I do.

Because as a delivery driver, you follow instructions

As an engineer, you are paid to think critically, using logic and math as needed.

You should be more talented at making decisions after school + experience than before. Which is why people would ask you for advice.

Is there anything surprising/wrong about this? I don't ask high school kids for investing advice.

robertAngst··on Blue-collar workers who become white-collar later in life
1 to 1 comparison.

Do you want your leadership figure at 30 to be someone who spent the last 11 years learning tech/design? Or someone who is new to the tech, but lived a 'tough' life for the last 14 years?

I don't see any advantages to the later, except they are lower cost.

robertAngst··on Let's start using DuckDuckGo more often
I'm a nerd with pretty mild porn usage and no terrorist habits.

I have 0 reason to not use google. I really don't care if they find out my obsession with electronics and that I have the hots for tall girls.

Out of every company, I'd give Google the nod as most helpful company of my lifetime.

Can someone tell me why I'm wrong?

robertAngst··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
Same feeling about the recruiters from Tesla.

It sounds horrible to work there, there are lots of companies that make cars.

robertAngst··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
If US "Defense" is any indicator, just pay more money.

Someone is willing to kill people for more money.

robertAngst··on Trump Moves to Ban Foreign Telecom Gear, Targeting Huawei and China
Wow that is crazy, I don't usually meet people who like higher taxes.

Are you sure you aren't misunderstanding the situation?

robertAngst··on Trump Moves to Ban Foreign Telecom Gear, Targeting Huawei and China
Can anyone stop him?

I don't want him to do this. I don't want these tariffs.

Does this mean the Republican Party is compliant in this nonsense?

robertAngst··on Stack Overflow lets Facebook track users across their sites
I see this as 2 options-

>If you don't like Facebook, get rid of it. I have. And I still have friends.

>Let Facebook advertise really specific to you. Weirdly specific, it might be useful. *

*might get blackmailed later if you were doing socially unacceptable things.

But you could not participate in Facebook, the same company you are trying to avoid.

robertAngst··on Bitcoin's First $1k Weekend Since 2017 Marks Nine-Month High
I imagine its easy to see Bitcoin as useless if you live in the United States.

However, given the inflation South Korea, Iran, Venezuela, and numerous countries in Africa, I find Bitcoin has a real use.

I'm sure many of those citizens do not want to be dependent on a foreign countries central bank for a steady currency.

robertAngst··on What I gained, lost and learned while working for Microsoft
And its these people who stick around too. Saves the company plenty of money giving them 3-5% yearly raises.
robertAngst··on SwiftWasm: Run Swift in Browsers
>programming language developed by Apple Inc

I would be too worried about Apple going full Apple and screwing devs to ever learn Swift.

I think this is a permanent disadvantage for anything B2B.

robertAngst··on Do transportation network companies decrease or increase congestion?
Alternative: More Parking
robertAngst··on San Francisco proposes “IPO tax” on eve of Uber offering
Apply this to Federal Healthcare.

Physicians want to get paid 300k/yr. Pharma is obsolete by computers and paid over 100k/yr.

Not to mention the pharma companies and hospitals.

Its why healthcare only gets worse with legislation.

robertAngst··on Shipping a Linux Kernel with Windows
That was it. it takes longer to set up.
robertAngst··on Shipping a Linux Kernel with Windows
Mouse settings, video websites, GUI isnt great, having to use terminal is a major turnoff.

I'm a linux user, so terminal isnt a big deal, but Ubuntu is no windows.

robertAngst··on Shipping a Linux Kernel with Windows
This removes the need for me to use Ubuntu Desktop or Linux Mint Desktop.

I hated dealing with the install, which often didnt work.

And getting anything to work perfect was too much work.

But I love Ubuntu Server, and the idea of being able to use linux without a separate install changes the potential of my Laptop.

robertAngst··on Shipping a Linux Kernel with Windows
Linux Desktop is not fine tuned like Windows.

Things take longer, and don't work out of the box.

I LOVE Ubuntu Server though, fav of all time.

robertAngst··on Shipping a Linux Kernel with Windows
Get a gaming laptop, ~1000 USD.

Mine has handled every programming, design, and editing I've ever needed.

Btw, I just Virtual Machine or SSH my linux boxes.

robertAngst··on Alphabet Announces First Quarter 2019 Results
I don't think I've ever used google so much. The search feature in particular.

Even navigating my own website is faster with a google search than to click on 3 links.

robertAngst··on Coffee Cups Are Next
The alternative- Customers make their own coffee?

Instead of driving to a starbucks, they- make coffee at home/work?

Is the taste of starbucks that much better that we need to drive to it, use all these extra materials, in the name of our morning drug Caffeine?

robertAngst··on How And Why We Switched from Erlang to Python (2011)
>Pick a language that has limited programmers, bring programmers from around the country, pay them well beyond 6 figures so they don't leave and have a crisis every time a programmer leaves.

OR

>Go with a mainstream language that they teach every CS kid and has every googable question imaginable in SO, hire 1 experienced programmer to manage a bunch of post-college-kids.

There are lots of good reasons to pick a language with a strong community. Once in a while, I hear people recommend obscure languages(or up-and-coming), and I think- that is going to be expensive to maintain.

robertAngst··on How And Why We Switched from Erlang to Python (2011)
> they'd written a monolith instead of building a system where the message delivery was designed to be sharded; n

Do some languages handle this differently?

Isnt this based on how the code was written rather than a language natively sharding?

robertAngst··on The answer to California's housing crisis is more housing
This is quite an interesting take, your state government is fighting local governments?

This is truly another dimension of the More/Less government dichotomy they teach you in school.

Btw, it seems the local governments are quite Anti growth? Am I understanding that correctly?

robertAngst··on The answer to California's housing crisis is more housing
>government creates zoning laws that cause prices to skyrocket

>person wants more government

I've been confused about this perspective, can you break down the thought train you have?

robertAngst··on The answer to California's housing crisis is more housing
> I live in an up and coming suburb of Detroit and every new apartment / condo building is incredibly skewed towards the high end.

>new

And what happens to the old units? They are sold and rented to the non-super wealthy.

I also live in south east michigan and my neighborhood is undergoing gentrification, they are tearing down 1000 sq ft homes and replacing them with 3500 sq ft homes.

What is the problem? I couldn't fit my large family(and renters) in a 1000 sq foot home.
