ro_sharp··on Is Memory Mapped File This Fast in Java?
Memory mapped files are great fun in C, but Java can't safely unmap files! Refer to this bug that's been open since 2002: http://bugs.java.com/view_bug.do?bug_id=4724038

Quote (December 2016): "I have a plan to implement this, but it requires changes to the Java Memory Model and to the compilers. I didn't get it done in time for JDK 9 because of being distracted by a ton of other things, but I hope I'll get it done by JDK 10."

ro_sharp··on High-performance .NET by example: Filtering bot traffic
I'd suggest that OLTP applications where non-trivial amounts of state are shared between transactions are a reasonable counterexample where single core performance optimisation really matters.
ro_sharp··on We didn’t lose control of the Web – it was stolen
> Companies violate the law if they are the proverbial bad eggs

I would suggest that in general companies violate the law if the benefits of doing so exceed the costs (risk of penalties, imprisonment of officers and so on)

ro_sharp··on When Factory Jobs Vanish, Men Become Less Desirable Partners
Is it just men's idea of a "man's role" that's a problem? The article seems to suggest women's preferences are also in play.
ro_sharp··on Aus govt monitors media critics, releases private data to “correct the record”
> [Campbell] described an official program of social media surveillance, in which Centrelink monitors social media for critics, and sends private information about those critics to the Minister’s office.

> Campbell also described an interpretation of social security law so broad that it effectively adds up to a license for the Department to disclose information against any citizen criticising government policy.

> the Department believes it can disclose private data on individuals from other government agencies such as the Australian Tax Office.

ro_sharp··on New Nokia 3310 will be practically unusable in many countries, including US
Is anyone aware of an alternative (with a similar budget price, maybe something marketed in the developing world?) that can be used on a modern phone network?
ro_sharp··on Shell's 1991 warning: climate changing ‘faster than at any time since ice age’
That would only be rational (profit maximising) behaviour on the company's part if they had an expectation that the negative externalities associated with climate change would eventually be priced in. The speed they decide to transition would then be in line with that expectation.

Funnily enough those externalities have generally still not been priced in, and it looks like these companies correctly believed that would be the case.

ro_sharp··on Australian welfare recipient’s data released to counter public criticism
What the article is suggesting is that perhaps the release of a person's private financial information by a government agency is not something the broader community would consider to be acceptable. From reading this comment and others it appears you have a personal political view regarding the extent of Australia's social safety net, which I would suggest is not particularly relevant to the debate. What is relevant, however, is that the release of this information to the media was actively approved by Alan Tudge, the current minister for the Human Services portfolio.
ro_sharp··on Common Multithreading Mistakes in C# – Unsafe Assumptions
I concur, with a caveat - feel free to use threading / async I/O if you think you really understand the runtime behaviour of your code.

I've seen so much code that just runs TaskFactory.StartNew some arbitrary number of times in a loop to run some CPU intensive task with no/effectively no I/O, presupposing a performance improvement as a result.

Understand runtime performance. Understand the different failure modes inherent in multi-threaded approaches, and lastly: test, profile, test and profile again!

ro_sharp··on A film that can cool buildings without the use of refrigerants
As an Australian in the depth of a hot summer, I beg to differ!

Almost every new house here includes a big air conditioner, and during hot months the euphemistically named 'load shedding' is often performed: http://www.afr.com/news/politics/sa-power-crisis-may-spread-...

Thus any improvements to (more) passive cooling technologies are very welcome

ro_sharp··on Pokémon GO: The Data Behind America’s Latest Obsession
I'm in Australia, and I've never seen an irl viral phenomenon on the streets like this. In the inner city of Brisbane, every second person I see is staring at their phone, swiping up to catch Pokemon. Mobs of 100+ people chasing 'lures' are being moved on from parks in the middle of the night. And there was a pub crawl: https://www.facebook.com/events/267390546965461/
ro_sharp··on How the Internet Changes Our Thoughts and Behaviors for the Worse (2011)
An interesting book on this topic: https://www.amazon.com/Shallows-What-Internet-Doing-Brains/d...

A review: Carr—author of The Big Switch (2007) and the much-discussed Atlantic Monthly story “Is Google Making Us Stupid?”—is an astute critic of the information technology revolution. Here he looks to neurological science to gauge the organic impact of computers, citing fascinating experiments that contrast the neural pathways built by reading books versus those forged by surfing the hypnotic Internet, where portals lead us on from one text, image, or video to another while we’re being bombarded by messages, alerts, and feeds. This glimmering realm of interruption and distraction impedes the sort of comprehension and retention “deep reading” engenders, Carr explains. And not only are we reconfiguring our brains, we are also forging a “new intellectual ethic,” an arresting observation Carr expands on while discussing Google’s gargantuan book digitization project.

If you control consumers and producers, and your data is just data, please just use a safe, common binary protocol (protobuf etc).
