rkochman··on Florida sues OpenAI and Sam Altman over AI risks
Ah, yes, from the state that brought us this official website: https://stopchemtrails.com/
rkochman··on The $20 an hour Cessna 172 experiment (2020)
People also choose to lie to the FAA.
rkochman··on Instead of cheques to fight climate change, billionaires should just pay taxes
Maybe just tax carbon emissions?
rkochman··on [dead]
People focus on the prestige and luxury aspects of private jets, but security and schedule flexibility are often far more important.
rkochman··on End Amazon’s Surveillance Partnership with Police
They’re talking about divesting generally.
rkochman··on End Amazon’s Surveillance Partnership with Police
“As we divest from policing…”

They lost me right there.

rkochman··on Blue Origin has a toxic culture, former and current employees say
“The other signatories, a majority of whom were engineers, declined to publicly disclose their names because they did not want to jeopardize employment at Blue Origin or harm their prospects in the aerospace industry for other jobs.”

That’s not how signing works.

rkochman··on The B-52’s’ “Rock Lobster” brought John Lennon back to music (2020)
Many of those Capitol Theatre videos are excellent. Talking Heads played there 3 days earlier: https://youtu.be/BFvgWguaC9g
rkochman··on Drivers react to Tesla’s full self-driving beta release
It’s not as simple as “the driver can take over if they need to.” In many cases it takes a human too long to recognize the system doing something dangerous and to intervene. This is going to end badly.
rkochman··on Apple reports Q3 results
I don’t think RVs are a good indicator. My wife and I just bought a 32’ Class A motorhome to travel around the country in the fall, since I’m forced to work remotely and the kids will be doing school remotely. If there were no pandemic, we would have never dreamed of buying one.
rkochman··on Google to keep employees home until summer 2021
Fellow Googler here. You need a new team.
rkochman··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
Zuck can do whatever he thinks is “fair” but ultimately he has to deal with the realities of the labor market, which will change if remote works really catches on.
rkochman··on With remote work plan, Facebook dashes hopes of paycheck arbitrage
I’m waiting for this to be framed as a racial equity issue. Are they really going to pay people in Detroit and Atlanta less than people in San Francisco and Seattle for the same job in the same “virtual” location?
rkochman··on Why the Cessna is such a badass plane (2019)
I have an RV-10, and it’s amazing. I can take 4 adults at 160kts burning 10gph, it’s easy to handle for a high performance airplane, and it’s such a simple design that maintenance costs are low.
rkochman··on Gilbert Strang Teaches Linear Algebra
G-Strang! I took this class in the fall of 1999, and I remember thinking it was unusual that every lecture was being recorded. So cool to see it still having an impact 20+ years later.
rkochman··on SoundCloud raises $75M from SiriusXM
I used to have XM weather. The data is generally better, and it works on the ground, but I couldn’t justify the $30/mo for the kind of flying I do. ADS-B weather is “good enough”.
rkochman··on SoundCloud raises $75M from SiriusXM
You are mistaken https://www.faa.gov/nextgen/programs/adsb/pilot/#fisb
rkochman··on Airbus A320 Family Non-Normal Notes [pdf]
Regarding a bomb on board: “In the cabin, procedures are laid down for assessing the risks of moving the device and for moving the device to the LRBL at door 2R.”

LRBL is “least risk bomb location” and is apparently required by the FAA: https://www.faa.gov/documentLibrary/media/Advisory_Circular/...

rkochman··on Bill Gates calls for income tax in Washington state
In dollars, sure, but he’s already giving most of his money away, so it won’t really meaningfully impact him. For decades, Microsoft benefitted from there being no personal income tax, making it easier to recruit employees to its Redmond headquarters. It would have been more meaningful if he came out in favor of the income tax in the 90s, rather than right now.
rkochman··on Tesla Q4 2019 Vehicle Production and Deliveries
This is exactly why I want one, and I’ve been close to ordering a Model 3 several times now. But it seems like each time, I hear a horror story from a friend with a Tesla: random stuff breaking, bad service experiences, weird behaviors. Just last month a coworker had the brakes fail on her day-old Model 3.

I bought a used Nissan Leaf 3 years ago and haven’t had a single thing go wrong with it. I’m afraid to give up the reliability of a more conventional car to drive “the future.”

It is telling, however, that pretty much everyone I know with a Tesla (including the ones who have had problems) love it and don’t regret their decision to buy it.

rkochman··on Incident: Wizz Air and Air Europa Planes in Near Collision over Spain
Vertical separation (based on altimeters) is way more precise than horizontal separation (based on radar, VHF navigation, GPS, eyeballs, etc).
rkochman··on Incident: Wizz Air and Air Europa Planes in Near Collision over Spain
FWIW, the dangerous part of wake turbulence is from the wing vortices, not the engines.
rkochman··on Incident: Wizz Air and Air Europa Planes in Near Collision over Spain
Regardless of what’s technically correct, I see “nm” way more often than “NM” in aviation contexts.
rkochman··on Sonos's “recycle mode” intentionally bricks devices so they can't be reused
I assume Apple and other companies sell the used products to liquidators who refurbish and resell them. Is that not true?
rkochman··on Why It’s So Hard to Change People’s Commuting Behavior
Same here, same employer, but in Kirkland. The $7 cash incentive was enough to get me to ride my bike most days. Since we never run out of parking now, it seems to have been effective.
rkochman··on Flight stats, entertainment, and trying to crack Widevine
"...what the weight on the wheels is..."

Small nit, but weight-on-wheels is also a boolean.

rkochman··on The Amazon Builders' Library
Amazon really emphasizes hiring and developing writing ability. I’m convinced it’s a major reason they’ve been so successful.

(I worked there 2006-2016)

rkochman··on Cost of owning a BMW i3
The title should be “Cost of owning a bad electric car (that is actually a hybrid car)”
rkochman··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
“Alexa, tell Google to turn up the heat”
rkochman··on US shutdown: Flight delays caused by staff shortages
I’m glad to see this. The shutdown has been too “business as usual” for most Americans, while others are expected to work without pay, which is ridiculous.
