rkk3··on The rising human cost of sports betting
What is the rising human cost? The only real data they presented was that sports betting is now legal in 30 states when it used to only be legal in Nevada. Gambling and other addictions have always had a societal cost.
rkk3··on Royal Society cautions against censorship of scientific misinformation online
> I suspect yes, because the poor research was simply not be being done. Science was not a career, there was no pressure to publish, it was the pastime of an elite few.

One of the critiques I hear about Academia these days, even in hard sciences, is that it is now significantly more dominated by the sons and daughters of elites (who don't have to take out loans and can afford unpaid research opportunities etc. etc.) So it might be on its way back to that.

rkk3··on How can you tell if the company youre interviewing with is rotten on the inside?
> I was referring to tech as in general SWEs doing line of business work, etc. which would account for the majority of SWEs at banks.

I wasn't on that side of the business & it was a long time ago... If they used the same level system as the front office, I would assume you would just have considerably less MD's and the pay would be at the lower end of the range but that would still put you at or close to 7 figures.

rkk3··on How can you tell if the company youre interviewing with is rotten on the inside?
> Does a tech MD at an investment bank really get a seven figure compensation?

Some desks make more of less, but why wouldn't they? MD's at Goldman used to even have a minimum salary of 500k[1] and bonus is generally a multiple of that... I'm not sure what you mean specifically by "tech" but Quant Strat, HFT etc are extremely valuable.

> Pretty sure I’m making more as a FAANGMULA company

You very well could be, big tech has been on a tear for a decade so equity compensation is ridiculous.

rkk3··on High carbohydrate intake, not fat, was associated with higher risk of mortality (2017)
I love non-fat greek yogurt, extremely high in protein %, but yeah don't understand the non-fat & added sugar stuff.
rkk3··on “Y Combinator is not worth it”
All established institutions are on the other side of the deal when you engage with them; wether it is an Ivy League school, IB, Big Tech or VC's. They all take something.

There are some valid points, people might not be aware of but overall the YC deal still seems better than most alternatives. I think he is discounting how hard it is at that early stage, that first capital needs to come from somewhere. Also YC founders seem to be disproportionately have softer landings if they don't go supersonic Unicorn IPO. Maybe you don't stand out in the top 10 of your batch and instead get aqui-hired and only make 800k/yr.

rkk3··on Joni Mitchell pulling music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young
Billie has 50M monthly views, more than 5x their combined monthly views so that would definitely matter.

The generational angle is probably more that the geriatric generation spends their free time watching cable "news" and its perpetual outrage machine.

rkk3··on Joni Mitchell pulling music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young
The article is from CNN.com and the cable infotainment networks and traditional media have a very strong interest in tanking alternative distribution channels for content.
rkk3··on Joni Mitchell pulling music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young
Looking forward to when R Kelly pulls the "Remix to Ignition" from Spotify to protest Joe Rogan.
rkk3··on Joni Mitchell pulling music from Spotify in solidarity with Neil Young
> They could get the artists back by just pulling that one JRE episode

You think it would stop there? In these past conversations I haven't even seen anyone on HN point to anything specific that was said in the Robert Malone episode that was so bad it needed to be pulled. It's just been an implicit you should know why this person is bad and why we all hate them.

Edit: Downvotes instead of replies with what misinformation was shared... sounds about right.

rkk3··on How can you tell if the company youre interviewing with is rotten on the inside?
> it's a sort of middle management role that a lot of people aspire to. Running a team, getting paid fairly decently.

really, 7 figures a year is "getting paid fairly decently" ?

MD in IB is the equivalent of "partner" in consulting, law firms etc. But the IB companies all went public so there is no controlling "partnership". Like "partner" it's the highest rung in the hierarchy and the distinction between them comes down to what team/desk/department they run & additional executive titles.

rkk3··on The case against masks at school
What does this have to do with masking young children, many who are vaccinated, in schools? Are you implying that they are a source of the spread and causing medical professionals to be burnt out? and that therefore we should ignore that both the teacher and student wearing a mask might be detrimental for ESL & Language development ?
rkk3··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
Tobacco has killed millions in the US and will keep killing millions in the US for the foreseeable future... I don't know how you can objectively even begin to justify saying Covid-19is worse... Especially in a world world with multiple highly effective therapies and vaccines
rkk3··on The case against masks at school
have a vaccinated 5 year-old and really frustrated that her & other kids in an overwhelmingly vaccinated & non-english language immigrant community, have to wear masks all day at school. The impact to speech, language & general development just seems so overwhelming compared against the potential benefit of children wearing a mask.
rkk3··on The case against masks at school
> The point of masking and being cautious at this point is not to avoid ever catching COVID, because it seems certain now that everyone will catch it at some point. The point is to be the last person to catch it

Great justification for making 5 year-olds wear masks for 6+ hours 5 days a week in school. This makes even more sense for the 5 year old kids that have ESL or Speech Pathology needs.

rkk3··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
> He’s making false claims about the vaccines’ safety

Like what? From your Atlantic piece this seems to be the closest to a false claim and its pretty underwhelming. These pieces read more like I should be upset because he appears is in the same sentence as Steve Bannon or the Proud Boys than the actual content of what he has said.

"Malone may keep company with vaccine skeptics, but he insists he is not one himself. His objections to the Pfizer and Moderna shots have to do mostly with their expedited approval process and with the government’s system for tracking adverse reactions. Speaking as a doctor, he would probably recommend their use only for those at highest risk from COVID-19. Everyone else should be wary" [1]

> and speaking at antivax events.

The one linked in your second article is an Anti-Vaccine Mandate event, which is not the same thing as being anti vaccine. It's possible to appreciate the benefits of vaccines and simultaneous think the government shouldn't force everyone to take one.

rkk3··on Spotify is removing Neil Young’s music after falling out over Joe Rogan
What is "antivax"? He was vaccinated against covid! And afaik doesn't question vaccination in general, he just has raised concerns about the MRNA Covid vaccines because of the Spike Protein. His concerns may be disproportionate and not necessarily what I'd prioritize during a global pandemic but saying he has blood on his hands and calling for censorship seems outrageous...
rkk3··on Jonathan the 190-Year-Old Tortoise Was Photographed in 1886 and Today
Totally right, he did arrive on St Helena 40-50 years into his life! Just like someone else did.
rkk3··on Jonathan the 190-Year-Old Tortoise Was Photographed in 1886 and Today
Jonathan was born on St Helena, ~10 years after the death of Emperor Napoleon on that island. Re-incarnation?
rkk3··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
1, Sure it does stress the hospital system in a different way.

2, Whole heartedly disagree with. Covid has specific health risk factors (Obesity, Diabetes etc) that long term people have a similar level of control over as smoking. People also have direct control over how much risk they want to take; there are vaccines, there are therapies, there are N95 Masks & no one is forcing you to go to a bar/club/sporting-event.

3. I'm not going to attribute to Covid the panic and over-reaction because of its novelty. Just like we don't attribute to the 9/11 terrorists the destabilization of the middle east and hundreds of thousands of deaths.

rkk3··on Ask HN: How do small companies do recruitment?
Best way is to hire through network.

You should be articulate and explicit about your hiring needs to your network, and careers page etc. Add a link to your company in your profile! You are on the front page of Hackernews, but even though I'm looking for one of the roles you mentioned and wanted to know more I can't see what you're hiring for or anything about your company.

But neither of those are from the Robert Malone interview? Which is what Neil Young was angry about and what the GP asked for examples of misinformation from.
rkk3··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
"free shots"... hah those shots cost Tens of billions of dollars if not more. It was a totally worthwhile investment to make (we probably should have invested more in it) - but lets not pretend like there is nothing we could do about obesity if threw 100 Billion at the problem.
rkk3··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
> So in that sense, the response to COVID is similar - though on an accelerated time scale, because the epidemic is much worse.

Tobacco still causes 480K+ deaths a year in the US so saying covid is worse is a very strong claim.

rkk3··on Pfizer board member suggests end to mask, vaccine mandates
> chronically sick includes "has a bit of high blood pressure".

The CDC says > 40% of US adults are obese (> 100 Million people!) and 13% of US adults have diabetes. If that's not a chronically sick population I don't know what is.

>> It has killed more than 865,000 Americans

> It looks like that's more Americans than have been killed in combat in all of the wars of the 20th century combined [1]

Like all deaths tragic, but let's not pretend young men, effectively kids, dying in war is the same as elderly & chronically sick populations dying of disease.

rkk3··on Sleep quality and consistency associated with better academic performance (2019)
>> I want a better sleep schedule but not bad enough to put it into practice

> This sums up the issue. Most people could get decent sleep if they wanted to or even made a basic effort

Agreed.

> but their current poor-sleep compromise isn’t bad enough to make them want to give anything up. Or they don’t understand what they’re losing because it has been so long since they tried a reasonable sleep schedule.

I think that just like with Diet or Exercise with sleep the feedback loops are longer/delayed and that stops people from engaging in overwhelmingly healthy behavior - because the habit is harder to form.

rkk3··on Ketogenic Diets and Chronic Disease: Benefits vs. Risks
