rkk3··on Murder-Suicides by Pilots Are Vexing Airlines as Deaths Mount
And just like school shootings, that German pilot studied MH370. The MH370 pilot likely did the same thing. He was separated from his wife & at his house they found he practiced the crash route on Microsoft Flight simulator.
rkk3··on Firefox rolls out Total Cookie Protection by default to all users
Surprised it's even that high, I tried to switch to Firefox the other month for privacy but gave up because it crashed on me it-least once a day.

Edit: thanks for the downvotes, I would have preferred if it worked but it didn't. I tried basic troubleshooting, disabling extensions etc. but didn't find it usable on macOs Monterey, think it doesn't play well with youtube.

rkk3··on Ask HN: Need advice about co-founding a startup with a VC and equity
> Work with 3 incredible guys that I trust

Do you actually trust them? It sounds like they haven't lived up to what you feel was promised in terms of helping with the GTM and getting the business off the ground.

You gave up control very early for money. Who knows if it was a good decision or not, but if you aren't at peace with the deal you made that is a very shaky foundation to be starting on.

> While the time with them is very helpful, I can't shake the feeling that if I'm doing 99% of the work + came up with the idea, I'm better of finding a co-founder and start my own company.

Since you are not CEO, presumably they own your IP - so your options may be limited with striking out on your own.

rkk3··on How San Francisco became a failed city
> I think that depends where you land.

"dystopia: an imagined state or society in which there is great suffering or injustice"

That doesn't preclude rich people. In fact having rich people help with the contrast, like in the article where a human beings body rotted on the sidewalk for a day outside a 5 million dollar home.

rkk3··on How San Francisco became a failed city
> The best way to describe San Francisco is that it feels like living in a cyberpunk utopia.

Utopia? More like a Cyberpunk Dystopia...

> Look at the actual numbers though and, at least officially, it’s not that bad. A city of ~800,000 residents has ~8,000 people living on the streets[1]. Around 1%, same as the ratio for USA as a whole with 580,000 homeless people[2].

1% of the US would be around 3 Million people...

rkk3··on How San Francisco became a failed city
And with outdoor restaurants it's possible to combine the thrill of potentially being randomly assaulted with the pleasure of fine dining!
rkk3··on Musk SEC Filing
Sort of ignores that during this period they were fighting the US. federal government and their product development gotten taken over by lawyers
rkk3··on Ask HN: Need help in understanding private equity offer
Well then the information you shared strains credulity, facts seems inconsistent & extremely odd- Why is a 17MM financing even worth mentioning if its worth 70B? And there are only a handful of companies even in that ballpark https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_unicorn_startup_compan...
rkk3··on Ask HN: Need help in understanding private equity offer
> if it goes for a piddling $500M your friend gets ~$11K over 3 years

They would get 0, you aren't accounting for seniority.

rkk3··on Ask HN: Need help in understanding private equity offer
Could be but with 607.5MM shares outstanding, that 10k full vest would have a FMV of of a few hundred dollars - they wouldn't even need to give options
rkk3··on Ask HN: Need help in understanding private equity offer
> at a valuation of $70B.

> it is a very early stage startup.

One of these does not fit.

rkk3··on Broadcom's stated strategy ignores most VMware customers
The strategy is to focus on the 600 enterprise companies that are responsible for 75% of their ARR & to cut marketing expense and R&D. Seems reasonable.
rkk3··on Reasons to ditch Chrome and use Firefox
I wanted to switch to Firefox, but gave up because it kept hanging on me with only a couple of tabs open.
rkk3··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
Try boardgamearena for Through the Ages & Dominion.games for dominion
rkk3··on Microsoft employees say 'golden boy' executives are still running wild
Not people I'd want to work with but surprised how tame the alleged mis-behavior is, wasn't worth reading.
rkk3··on Scientists discover an ancient forest inside a giant sinkhole in China
Probably because of 'Romance of the Condor Heroes', the series defined the Wuxia genre & the sinkhole is a major plot point. In the west similarly a lot tropes of get lifted from LOTR
rkk3··on Why aren't fentanyl test strips more widespread? (2021)
Should really just start selling "Illegal Drugs" in standardized doses like alcohol and pharmaceuticals so people don't get surprised. Drug users may be rational but individual testing puts a huge burden on the consumer that many aren't going to want to pay for in the name of preventing a tail risk.
rkk3··on Kids are far behind in school
> Well, to anecdotally back you up, in Massachusetts with the #1 public schools in the country

Maybe they have the "best overall public school systems" but looking at individual public high schools Massachusetts doesn't even make the list till #26 and then not again until #153 in the national rankings

https://www.usnews.com/education/best-high-schools/search

rkk3··on Kids are far behind in school
For college graduates in the US, high school is typically not something included on your resume. The only time it'd makes sense to include is if it's a flex, like if you went to Philips Academy or somewhere "special".
rkk3··on Kids are far behind in school
> or that employers in the future will note that they graduated later in life and thus pass them over for a different candidate?

How would a potential employer know they were graduating college at 24 vs 22, and without knowing the reason for the difference why would they care. "I'm afraid we can't hire you at FAANG, it seems you had to repeat the first grade 15 years ago."

rkk3··on Ask HN: Books about people who persevered when no one else believed in them?
The Splendid and the Vile
rkk3··on Y Combinator's Message to Founders
Realistically engineering and product impacts just play out over a much longer period of time & the outcomes were already baked in for the next few quarters of 2020, even at a small startup. Engineering Layoffs in March aren't why they didn't catch the Covid boom in April. They were never positioned to ride that wave.
rkk3··on Y Combinator's Message to Founders
> Funny thing is I’ve seen this exact advice destroy a company. In March 2020 they did deep layoffs and cited the need to be “default alive.” Then their main market surprisingly quickly grew in the rest of 2020 , they wanted to capitalize on that, but they had laid off too many engineers who knew their infra and had enough outages and slow product development that they lost to their competitors and are now way underwater on their valuation.

It sounds like it was an unhealthy company and just didn't realize it till the tide went out. Seems doubtful that a quarter or two of fewer engineers slinging code was the root of its inability to attract & retain customers in a growing market.

rkk3··on Former employee blows whistle on baby formula production plant tied to outbreak
> I'm surprised it was worth shipping

I was as well. I don't know what the "Chinese Fedex" rate's were but maybe it's because most of the volume they move is from China -> US and the return trips are empty.

rkk3··on Why to Start a Startup in a Bad Economy (2008)
> The fed raising interest rates so far has done nothing to level home prices.

They've barely raised rates! 0-1% federal funds rate is not a normal range, especially when inflation is ~10%

rkk3··on Former employee blows whistle on baby formula production plant tied to outbreak
Until Covid hit I had a friend who would go stores in the USA, Buy baby formula at retail price and re-sell it on WeChat to wealthier people in China who she'd mail it to. She actually made a decent margin, because they really don't trust the manufactures there.
rkk3··on Ask HN: Hiring managers why don't you post salary range in your job postings?
Probably because

1) I received multiple ranges from different people, the minimum got lower and the maximum didn't change.

2) Being told "we value transparency" and then told your salary can vary by over 100% for the same level felt like someone spiting in my face, kind of like like when a cable company says "Your time is important to us, please hold"

3) Total compensation is much more descriptive than salary. Ie; I read today that the new CEO of Amazon only got 175k in salary in 2021.

rkk3··on Ask HN: Hiring managers why don't you post salary range in your job postings?
Have you found it helpful? Having a recruiter at a "transparent" company give me a base salary range band where the Max was more than 2x the Min actually kinda left a bad taste in my mouth
rkk3··on On $600B of Y Combinator startup success
> YC recently published an updated Top Companies list including 271 companies with a combined official valuation of over $600B (we now estimate it closer to ~$900B). Much can change in a year!

900B! Is this time travel or cognitive dissonance?

#3-5 on the list are being valued significantly above 50B and closer to 100B Meanwhile...

#3, Instacart now 24B (private valuation)

#4, Doordash now 20B

#5, Coinbase now 12B

rkk3··on No, America is not collapsing
> my Latin teacher told me that America was declining and falling just like Rome, and that was back in 1995

> No, America is not collapsing

A collapse is different than a protracted decline and fall.

Historians could make a lot of similar points about Rome still being a successful superpower in the 3rd, 4th or even 5th century AD.
