I'm constantly trying to learn how businesses acquire new paying customers. I blog about web marketing here: http://gettingmoreawesome.com

I live in the Mission in San Francisco. Please contact me if you are ever in the area and want to talk about Web Marketing: www.twitter.com/risk

rishi··on Chat Bubble Blindness
I think the lift in conversions is because Intercom bubbles aren't live chat typically, they are a "Contact Us" form or an automated bot (not true "live chat"), so people are starting to ignore them. They changed their message at the top to say "Live Chat" so people click on that more because they are expecting real live chat.
rishi··on Ask HN: Best books or videos to get better at sales?
Grant Cardone's The Closer's Survival Guide.

Get it on Audible: http://www.amazon.com/Closers-Survival-Guide-Third/dp/B00K1O...

I've read a ton of sales books and this is by far the best one. Actionable stuff - no fluff. Great for founders who have trouble getting the deal closed and the cash in the bank.

rishi··on Google acquires BufferBox (YC S12)
Congrats! BufferBox has an awesome intro video.
rishi··on Facebook Gifts
It looks like Facebook allows businesses to add their products into their "Gift Store"

https://www.facebook.com/help/444702442234880

This might be a great way to get your physical product in front of millions of people.

rishi··on Ask HN: Lifehacker mentioned my app & traffic boosted. How to keep momentum?
Turn on re-marketing as quickly as possible. You don't have to start paying for it right now but at least setup the tags so you can start cookie-ing new visitors - you can do this with Google Adwords. Feel free to contact me if you need help setting this up.

Press is the best way to leverage re-marketing.

rishi··on AdBlock Plus will soon allow "non-intrusive" ads by default
I totally agree. It doesn't make any sense from a marketing/branding standpoint. The company is called "AdBlock" not "SomeAdsBlock".

Lots of people still have no clue about this company. How will new users perceive it moving forward?

rishi··on Show HN: Our new Startup - Interactive travel guides
Hi Jason - I've been following your company for a while now and really love the service you provide! Congrats on the public launch your product is getting better and better.

My biggest feedback is that I found the left hand navigation to be really confusing. Instead I would use big beautiful travel images to draw the reader in so they will actually read your sample itinerary.

If you ask any big time blogger what the #1 tactic to draw a reader in it is always a combination of a written compelling tagline and an awesome image.

rishi··on Upgrading Dropbox to 16GB for 25USD
This is proof that Dropbox's referral strategy is working. This guy spent $25 to acquire a bunch of new users for DropBox. Way cheaper than what DropBox probably pays for the same users.

Awesome post! Clever idea.

rishi··on Yelp Files For $100 Million IPO
Yelp is 1 of 3 apps on my Android that I actually use. They have the best mobile experiences for reviews about a restaurant before you eat there. They have built a strong brand and I hope they do more with it. I for one, am really excited about their IPO.

rishi··on Netflix loses 800,000 subscribers (stock drops 28%)
George - that is really incredible feedback. thank you for that comment.
rishi··on Follow up emails work
One of the founders of FollowUp.cc left a comment on the blog post explaining the service a little better to me.

Here are the major benefits of FollowUp.cc in my eyes: 1. Multiple Email accounts all in one account 2. Calendar View of reminders 3. Response Detection (cancels a follow up if a response has been sent)

rishi··on Evernote Acquires Skitch
I'm a huge fan of skitch. I hope they continue to support the product.
rishi··on Mind Your En And Em Dashes: Typographic Etiquette
This is one of my favorite articles on typography. A few of my highlights: 1. Use one space after the period. 2. Indent to start a new paragraph (no need to have a blank line and indent). 3. Use smart quotes!
rishi··on How our SaaS startup got 1000+ signups in just 7 days, without getting Crunched.
The site does look nice and congrats on launching!

The real test will be how many of those signups turn into paying customers.

rishi··on Work on a project. Find a co-founder.
It makes a ton of sense to find co-founders at Hackathons.

Lots of startup teams find each other at previous jobs or when working on a school project.

rishi··on Instantly Add Chat To Hacker News
got it. Thanks for answering my question.
rishi··on Instantly Add Chat To Hacker News
This is very cool! How does it work with my websites SSL?
rishi··on Content Marketing Hacks from Dan Martell
Thanks for the quick hacks. I'm a little confused though - are you advising that you shouldn't display the date in the blog posts?
rishi··on Amazon will end affiliate program in California if new law passes
Are they doing this for tax reasons?
rishi··on Google: What do you love?
looks like pintrest
rishi··on The Worlds Greatest Upsell: Facebook Pages
I feel like all airlines do a ton of upselling these days. I think that is the only way they stay in business.
rishi··on The Worlds Greatest Upsell: Facebook Pages
haha you are correct. GoDaddy is an upselling machine. The problem is on GoDaddy you constantly think you are being upsold. With Facebook you don't feel like that.
rishi··on Facebook Acquires Sofa
These guys have amazing design. Have you guys seen the cappuccino maker design? Incredible! http://www.madebysofa.com/#design
rishi··on Tweet at 11p EST for more engagement
very very good point. I generalized "Status Updates" to Twitter and Facebook. I changed the title of the blog post so it is more clear.
rishi··on BusinessWeek's Best Young Tech Entrepreneurs of 2011
Solid list and congrats to everyone on it.

I'm not a fan of how much emphasis BusinessWeek puts on the funding amount. It really is the only data point they write about. Would like to see revenue or users... or something else.

rishi··on Mailgun (YC W11) Raises $1.1 Million For Its "Twilio For Email"
"Let your users leave comments, answer simple questions, upload data as attachments and interact with each other using their email clients."

Q: So a customer can reply back to one of your emails and it turns into a comment?

thanks

rishi··on 38 Directories to Submit Your Web App to When You Launch
a few more solid directories in the comments as well
rishi··on Add recurring billing to your site. No coding, monthly fees, gateways. Code=HN
Hey Guys - this is pretty cool. On your homepage I would focus on how easy it is to use rather than the price point. Since almost all services are lower than 3.9%.

Good luck - looking forward to seeing you guys take on the world.

rishi··on Justin Kan is speaking about the Socialcam launch this Thursday in SF
I'm going! Would be cool to learn some inside tips on how to get early users.
