ripply··on How illiterate people use their mobile phones (2012)
Most people don’t know this but a lot of Japanese words have pitch accents that you need a dictionary to learn if you don’t learn the word audibly and the accents are not in the English/Japanese dictionaries, only in specialized Japanese/Japanese dictionaries. When Chinese speakers learn Japanese they do well at learning it because it’s similar to Chinese pitch.
ripply··on Did I just lose half a million dollars?
Yes, this is how Bitcoin is designed and has worked from the beginning. The problem is his wallet did save the private key for the change address he just didn’t save the wallet, so it was lost - the changed address wasn’t unwanted, it was wanted, it just didn’t get saved. I believe early Bitcoin wallets generated addresses randomly so you couldn’t recover everything from a seed and had to save your wallet.
ripply··on Ask HN: Is the quality of Google Maps going downhill?
I encountered this recently when traveling in the Colorado mountains, it was definitely a GPS thing because I've never had the problem anywhere else (on the same phone).
ripply··on YouTube deleting comments who criticize their hiding of the dislike count
The only other way to engage is to leave a negative comment
ripply··on After two hours zinc oxide sunscreen loses effectiveness, becomes toxic: study
Correct, the atmosphere will block the rays that cause vitamin d production so the best time to be exposed is around noon +/- a few hours when the sun is above you

ripply··on Lenovo tablet forced update shows un-dismissable, un-mutable, ad notifications
This also applies to their Kindle devices, I believe removing the ads cost $20.
ripply··on Samsung remotely disables TVs looted from South African warehouse
This is called ACR and you can disable it in settings. The FTC sued Vizio when they added it to their TVs without a way to turn it off.
ripply··on Illinois Is the First State to Have High Schools Teach News Literacy
Yes you are correct, you did read a different article, that’s the core problem. A large portion of Trump’s base still believes that fishy things happened in the election, if the journalist covering this story wanted to cover this without bias and truly believes that the program is a net positive (which I agree is probably true) they shouldn’t be injecting divisive politics into their coverage as these people are completely done with the media at this point, the OP is going easy describing what some of these people believe. They roll their eyes at anything these people say now, they have lost all faith in the media.

The story reads like the journalist is completely unaware of their implicit left wing bias and makes little effort to fix it - to them, this example is an obvious example to use but it will alienate readers on the other side (like the OP), yet they used it anyway.

ripply··on 1Password for Mac Moving to Electron
No the vault is not able to be a local vault but you can self host your vault on your own server and it uses secure remote password for logging in just like 1password. It also has end to end encryption for the vault. The only way for your vault to get compromised is through a server compromise and brute forcing your password, due to how SRP works, even if DNS was taken over and someone intercepted your login request it’s not possible to derive anything about your password and the client would detect that the remote doesn’t actually have the vault. Even if they man in the middled the login they can’t learn about your password or get access to your encrypted vault.
ripply··on Kepler telescope glimpses population of free-floating planets
It requires negative energy in current theoretical physics, which is what OP is talking about, we have no idea if that will ever actually be possible, its wishful thinking at this point.
ripply··on YouTube permanently bans Right Wing Watch
Adding some context to this.

You are absolutely correct, his video did not have any added audio commentary or basically anything and he won his case, his video was just sections copied directly from the source creating a compilation of the original video.

In this case as I understand it, the content being uploaded is extremist content (in their eyes) explicitly being uploaded to highlight its extremism (in their eyes), the difference between the two situations being that Sargon’s video didn’t contain extremist content that YouTube wouldn’t want on their platform.

RWW is posting content they essentially want to be removed. They got what they wanted, the content was removed. In a sense they succeeded in what they set out to do.

I wish their channel be reinstated, but this situation looks to be slightly different from Benjamin’s unless more details come out.

It seems like YouTube messed up and is treating them harshly, but for all we know this type of content is now no longer allowed on the platform due to policy change.

ripply··on Heavier passengers on planes mean new safety limits for airlines
Yea the food pyramid is pretty bad, its basically a how to guide on getting diabetes. Cereals and grains have the word glycemic loads while fats and meats are the healthiest things to combat insulin resistance and diabetes but the pyramid tells you to never eat them. If the pyramid was inverted (except for sweets) it would be healthier.
ripply··on Why Don't Americans Use Bidets?
The electronic bidets will run the water at low pressure for a few seconds to wash that away, the cheap ones will raise above behind a guard and the water pressure causes it to lower which also causes it to run for a little before use
ripply··on Authorities are looking to close the gap on crypto unhosted wallets
I don’t think that’s analogous, with cryptocurrency you generate the text file from a random number generator or rolling dice, there is no issue with copyright for private keys. The courts have already ruled that copying DVD decryption keys is allowed under free speech.
ripply··on Vitalik Buterin's $1B crypto donation to India Covid Relief fund
I think it was part of the initial tokenomics, sort of an appeal to authority, if the team withdrew all their liquidity he could come in and supply the rest as liquidity, the entire project is a meme ponzi scheme IMO and it adds to the meme factor. the same effect could have been done with a contract proving liquidity couldn’t be removed.
ripply··on Afraid to Google a thing because I don't want the algorithm to think I like it
Try going through your watch history/liked videos and deleting things if it’s really bothering you, I watched a bunch of political videos a few years ago and got burnt out so I deleted every one (took a few hours) and my recommendations instantly changed
ripply··on Ethereum Breaks Past $3k
Once proof of stake is fully implemented and everything is migrated over, there will be no more energy intensive mining. Mining on a proof of stake chain just involves putting your Ether as a deposit that gets slashed if you act maliciously, the energy cost of this is just to run the servers, essentially, its you putting your money where your mouth is. Potentially, by the time proof of stake is fully released, the cost to run your own node (32 ETH) could be between 100-500k depending on the market value of Ether.

The benefit of this with the mining algorithm that Ethereum uses is that you can mine with off the shelf consumer parts. When proof of stake is fully switched to, those parts will just be sold on the market.

With Bitcoin, switching over to something like proof of stake will be extremely political and will only work out if the market decides that the new proof of stake blockchain fork is the 'real' Bitcoin. It will be political because miner's mining hardware becomes e-waste so they have an incentive to continue mining regardless of the fork. The only way that miners stop mining Bitcoin is if the blockchain becomes worthless in the market so that the miners no longer can afford to pay their operating costs with the mining rewards.

ripply··on Apple's follow-up to M1 chip goes into mass production for Mac
I also am a tiling window manager man and tried that a few years back (as well as everything else on the market) when I had a mac from work, unfortunately, without real support from the OS, these are all just poor mans windows managers and can't compare to the real thing. I gave up trying to use any of them and ended up installing a virtual machine where I could actually use one.
ripply··on Geico data breach exposed customers’ driver’s license numbers
Some states driver's license numbers are deterministically computed with your name, date of birth and gender.

If you live in one of those states and your data is already out there (through a previous breach) then your driver's license number is already public knowledge to hackers.

According to an online calculator this applies to these states:

Florida

Illinois

Maryland

Michigan

Minnesota (Prior to December 13, 2004 only)

Nevada (Prior to January 1998 only)

New Hampshire

New Jersey

New York (Prior to September 1992 only)

Washington

Wisconsin

ripply··on SmartFarm device to harvest air moisture for self-sustaining urban farming
> It takes a huge amount of energy, too

This will often be more expensive than having a truck bring the water to you when running a dehumidifier especially when you are looking to get out enough for farming.

ripply··on At 38.5% vaccinated, US may be running low on people eager for a shot
The general logic behind these people is that they have lost almost all faith in the main stream news. Its so bad that if you trust the news right now, then you are most likely left leaning or moderate. This culminates in a general distrust of what the news reports and now that the news is reporting that the vaccines are safe - which statistically is true - these people are tired of being lied to and are being skeptical of a quickly developed vaccine based on newer technology.

So in that population of people that distrust the news, there will be crazies that will never take the vaccine and there will be varying levels of reasonable people who decide to wait on taking the vaccine while weighing their own personal risk level with the risk of taking a quickly developed vaccine with no long term studies behind it. The longer we wait, the more of these people will decide taking the vaccine is less risky than getting covid as more studies come out, especially once the FDA promotes it from emergency approval to full authorization (which requires 6 months of data). Some of these people will of course wait longer than full authorization, they may want to wait a year or longer depending on how must they mistrust the news, its unfortunate but its going to take decades for these people to regain trust in the main stream news and the crazies I don't think will ever trust the news again.

ripply··on I refuse to stand by while my students are indoctrinated
The Department of Education had ruled that this violated civil rights laws at the end of Trump's term due to a case going on in Illinois.

Biden's very first EO caused the DOE to reverse course and suspend their previous decision that it violated civil rights laws and now creating racial affinity groups in schools is ok according to the DOE.

ripply··on YouTube Kids a “vapid wasteland” say US lawmakers
I've noticed that its basically impossible for Youtube to recommend me anything outside the bubble it has assigned me. I end up using guest accounts to find new content but even that doesn't work too well (the guest account also ends up in its own bubble) and generally only recommends the most popular videos in a region so I even switch regions sometimes.
ripply··on U.S. rent has increased 175% faster than household income over past 20 years
Housing cannot both be a good investment and affordable by definition unless new supply outpaces demand. The problem is that for so many Americans, their house constitutes the majority of their net worth which naturally causes them to advocate for policies that increase their property values which among other things, includes zoning limitations that depress new supply.

ripply··on Why Bitcoin is so bad for the planet – video explainer [video]
Moving consensus away from proof of work, proof of stake is currently the promising solution but there will be a lot of pushback from the miners as their hardware would become obsolete and they may decide to just continue mining like they currently are.

The market would then decide which is the real Bitcoin and the mining would only stop once it’s no longer economically viable to mine Bitcoin due to the price dropping.

ripply··on The Impact of Chief Diversity Officers on Diverse Faculty Hiring
Occupy wallstreet was 2011, it ended with the narrative switching from class warfare to critical race theory and systemic racism. Gamergate was 2014 when the culture war really started to heat up. 08 was a different time, things have really changed that much.
ripply··on Visa May Add Cryptocurrencies to Its Payments Network, Says CEO
A stable coin doesn’t necessarily have to be backed by fiat, DAI is backed by crypto assets and those assets can fluctuate and sometimes need to be increased during volatility.

I think the point of fiat backed stable coins are more for getting around regulations (eg Tether) and a fiat on-ramp for getting into the ecosystem. Certainly if the government seized a large portion of Tethers assets then that could affect other assets, but this actually has already happened with (a small portion, not large) Tether and nothing catastrophic happened.
