ripper1138··on Kevin Langdon's 'Omni' IQ test
Eh, if one person takes 10 min to solve a problem that takes another person 10 hours, we would usually say the faster individual is more intelligent.
ripper1138··on Ask HN: Platform for 11 year old to create video games?
If you think Roblox is an unsafe platform, you should see the rest of the internet.
ripper1138··on GPT-4o
I got the same vibe from him on the All In podcast. For every question, he would answer with a vaguely profound statement, talking in circles without really saying anything. On multiple occasions he would answer like 'In some ways yes, in some ways no...' and then just change the subject.
ripper1138··on Meta Reports First Quarter 2024 Results
All things considered (Elon etc) I’d still be shocked if an advertiser was willing to spend >= on threads compared to X.
ripper1138··on Biden signs TikTok bill into law, starting clock for ByteDance to divest
Do some research on game theory and you’ll find otherwise.
ripper1138··on NPR suspends veteran editor as it grapples with his public criticism
American Fiction satirizes this aspect of modern media incredibly well.
ripper1138··on A Lufthansa A350's frustrating Oakland diversion
This is the type of take that proves AI is in a hype bubble right now.
ripper1138··on Tesla Drivers Have the Highest Crash Rate of Any Brand: Study
You guys are trying to discredit the statistics here, but anyone in the Bay Area knows this is true. I wish there were stats on “near accidents” because Tesla drivers would be leading that too.
ripper1138··on Cities: Skylines 2's troubled launch, and why simulation games are freaking hard
What’s the high profile game?
ripper1138··on Why Cities: Skylines 2 performs poorly
Respectfully, just take the L on your original comment and move on. It’s ok to be wrong.
ripper1138··on Why Cities: Skylines 2 performs poorly
The studio that made this has like 30 devs.
ripper1138··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
Doesn’t seem like a fair comparison.
ripper1138··on Google Cloud Spanner is now half the cost of Amazon DynamoDB
True and even worse, inaccurate dick measuring.
ripper1138··on The era of America’s subminimum wage for tipped restaurant workers may be ending
I was just trying to convince my friend recently: if you order at the counter and bus your own table, you don't have to tip! Even Subway shows the tip screen now, and only an insane person would tip at Subway.
ripper1138··on Nvidia announces financial results for second quarter fiscal 2024
Their quarterly dividend is only $0.04 per share, total assets at 50B (vs 350B+ for other 1T companies), they cannot easily sell more chips and increasing price can only go so far.
ripper1138··on When no one can afford to live in America anymore
Go visit the antiwork subreddit you’ll see what they mean.
ripper1138··on The Amazon Prime Day 2023 AWS Bill
It’s disk storage for EC2
ripper1138··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months
The tax credit is hard to pass up!
ripper1138··on Tesla on track to smash targets after producing almost a million EVs in 6 months
An amazing achievement. For reference, Toyota produced 10 million cars last year.
ripper1138··on First 'tooth regrowth' medicine moves toward clinical trials in Japan
An implant is certainly "significant work".
ripper1138··on First 'tooth regrowth' medicine moves toward clinical trials in Japan
OP must have a disease or something. According to some brief research, $25B spent on out-of-pocket dental work in 2021, which averages out to like $70 per person. And I'd guess that a significant number of people don't spend a dime.
ripper1138··on First 'tooth regrowth' medicine moves toward clinical trials in Japan
Dental insurance is usually pretty decent in the US, probably not worth leaving the country unless it's significant work. I have no idea with OP is getting done that costs thousands of dollars. Certainly that's an outlier.
ripper1138··on GCP automatically lowered our quota, caused an incident, and refused to upgrade
Is this comment from 2015? AWS just had a $20B quarter.
ripper1138··on Wow, is Apple’s Vision Pro loaded with pixels
Display size and distance from the eye are also variables when calculating PPD
ripper1138··on Apple Vision predictive bio-feedback
Totally. "10% of my life" sounds a lot more significant than "3.5 years"
ripper1138··on Google “We have no moat, and neither does OpenAI”
Your grandparents use ChatGPT? For what?
ripper1138··on Scaling up the Prime Video audio/video monitoring service and reducing costs
This is what L6 and L7 are building at Amazon, meanwhile in sys design interviews I’m being asked to design solutions for a gaming platform with 50M concurrent users.
ripper1138··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
I agree with you. My guess is these people are a bit older and have different habits. Also lmao at “awkward interaction for selecting the card” as if people don’t have to select the card out of their physical wallet in the same way?
ripper1138··on Apple Pay’s long road to paying off is getting shorter
I guess it’s a matter of perspective.

I’ve seen people fiddling with their purse/wallet searching for the right credit card, backing up the checkout line, while others breeze through with phones/watches that they already have in hand.

ripper1138··on AWS staff spending ‘much of their time ’optimizing customers' clouds'
> AWS doesn’t even have a way to report a bug…

Customers are able to report literally any issue at all via support. AWS support is a huge organization. On my service team, there were plenty of instances where bugs were reported by customers.
