rip747··on The Simple Technology That Accidentally Ruined Baseball
you hit the nail on the head. watching a baseball game is like poking your eye with an icepick. there are too many breaks, too many commercials; thus too slow of a pace. they need to pick it up so that a game is shorter and the action is constant. viewers don't have that long of an attention.
rip747··on Drafts of Chapters 5–8 from the Rails Tutorial 3rd Ed
might be just me, but i'm getting a DNS error accessing http://draft.railstutorial.org/
rip747··on Yahoo stopping all new development of YUI
honestly at this point, i think most people are using jquery with either jqueryui or bootstrap. Still its really sad to see such an established framework become EOL. Thank you Yahoo for all the work you've done on YUI.
rip747··on Getting rid of burnout permanently
working on your own stuff for 8-12 hours a day 5-6 days a week is WAAAAY different then working 8-12 hours a day 5-6 days a week for someone else and not getting compensated. Your comparison is a complete miss.
rip747··on Tell HN: Take vacation
Ever once in a while we see posts about how important it is to take a vacation, but one thing we never see is about actually planning and budgeting in order to be able to take one.

What are the ways people currently budget for vacations?

Personally the way I do it now is I actually have a separate checking account that is used _specifically_ for vacations, _end of list_. Every time i do a consulting gig, I break it down the money like this:

33% - into business checking account for taxes

the remaining 66% is broken down to:

25% - another business checking account for expenses 25% - into a personal savings account 25% - into the vacation checking account 25% - to paying off debt (CC, mortgage, whatever)

rip747··on Show HN: HTML5 Game of Life in 24-bit RGB
i'm _NOT_ trying to be funny. you should seriously consider putting a warning page on that site that this could induce seizures or migraines.
rip747··on Pied Piper
does anyone actually watch this show? I've tried several times to get into it, but I just don't find it funny at all. Sure hearing startup names being thrown around (like Github) and knowing who they are is present day nostalgia, but not enough to make me committed to the show. I compare the likeness of Silicon Valley to "the Big Bang Theory"; those who are into those fields find them more annoying then funny.
rip747··on NASA Open Sources Apollo 11 Code (2009)
that guy deserves a medal. 4 years of work and documentation and he gives it to the world. the documentation is pretty good with some incredible pictures and diagrams. now granted i'm not an electrical engineer so i don't know if it is accurate.
rip747··on Ask HN: Has Google/Bing won the search engine war?
fair enough. have you checked out google enterprise search then?

rip747··on Ask HN: Has Google/Bing won the search engine war?
if the cap on google custom search is the only roadblock, then why not use bing's:

rip747··on Let's build a webinar tool that doesn't suck
i'm with you are on this one as well. i'm tried of seeing these "startup" sites that basically show you nothing of the product yet want you to trust them with your email address. how do i know there is even a product behind this site? this could all be an elaborate attempt at email harvesting a niche group.
rip747··on Writing your own LINQ provider
LINQ makes moving from CFML to .NET a lot easier. in CFML you're mostly working with queries and using LINQ makes you feel right at home.

rip747··on Google Reader announced its shutdown exactly a year ago
what's funny is i remember last year, crying and moaning about the google reader shutdown and scrambling to find a new newsreader. never really found one that fit the bill like google reader did.

its been a year now and i honestly don't miss google reader one bit. HN has become my news readers now :)

rip747··on Save more with Google Drive
I highly doubt that Google will ever abandon Google Drive since its part of Google Apps for Business:

http://www.google.com/enterprise/apps/business/

Google Reader was a _free_ application and like all _free_ applications, once they start losing money they are discontinued.

rip747··on Git 2.0 release notes
how close is git-subtree to svn-externals? I've always had people complain about moving from svn to git because there wasn't a feature like svn-externals. git-submodules obviously didn't cut it.
rip747··on Agile Is Dead (Long Live Agility)
is it me or when an article is titled: "[something] is dead, long live [something]", you immediately want to flag it out of existence? seriously, comes up with a better title.
rip747··on Ask HN: Looking for contributors?
CFWheels - https://github.com/cfwheels/cfwheels

An open source ColdFusion framework inspired by Ruby on Rails

rip747··on Show HN: SqlSmash, A productivity plugin for Sql Server Management Studio
btw, what will the price be once its out of beta?
rip747··on Show HN: SqlSmash, A productivity plugin for Sql Server Management Studio
having a "find all references" feature is a god send. can't tell you how many time i've scripted the database to a new query window and did a manual search just to find out all the place a stored procedure is being used.
rip747··on I am not an introvert. I am just busy
I think the take away is that sometimes you can't see the forest through the trees, so look at the sunset.

When I'm working on something and I just can't figure it out, I take my dog for a walk and hold some ridiculous one-way conversation with him. Yeah I know I must look like a manic talking to an eight pound pomeranian, but the point is to put your mind completely somewhere else. It's amazing how the solution just appears when your mind isn't engulfed in the problem.

rip747··on Matt Cutts is looking for scraper sites
why they don't just integrate this into the results page? what's wrong with having up and down votes or a report this link button for the results?
rip747··on Ask HN: do you use App.net?
i never really understood what they were trying to do.

even going to their about page (https://app.net/about/) doesn't really explain anything. there are no screen shots, only common buzzy worded language, no depth of explanation on benefits of using the product.

rip747··on REPL: To JSON what Excel is to CSV
thank god i'm not the only one.

I don't know what it is, some of the products/projects being shown on HN lately have the problem of coherently explaining and demoing what the they do.

rip747··on Dug.js – A JSONP to HTML Script
why not use liquid?: https://github.com/tonyheupel/liquid.js
rip747··on Free unlimited rebooting experience from vintage operating systems
its like seeing a lost friend in a picture sniff
rip747··on Show HN: Guipedia – clone, program, and execute in the browser
after reading your comment again. I took it in the wrong context. sorry about that, my bad.
rip747··on Show HN: Guipedia – clone, program, and execute in the browser
snide remarks don't minimize the fact that I couldn't grasp the concept or find the button within the amount of time I visited the site.
rip747··on Show HN: Guipedia – clone, program, and execute in the browser
sat there for 30 seconds clicking around. haven't a clue of what this thing is suppose to be doing. what is the concept?
rip747··on If you had to start over, what technologies would you learn in 2014?
care to elaborate on what exactly you mean by "automated". I fail to see how installing physical hardware can be automated.
