rintakumpu··on The Lost Treasure of Sid Meier's Pirates
I absolutely miss this era of gaming, when mechanics and genres weren't yet fully set in stone and the different layers of games interacted in creative ways. I don't think there's a collective hole in the memory of that era, though. These games are rightfully considered classics, whether they worked well (like Pirates!) or were a bit of a mess (like Covert Action).

Personally, I'd love to see this type of game design revived, with modern quality-of-life sensibilities and a better understanding of game mechanics. In fact, shameless plug: for the past four years, I've been building Trucker 2056 (https://trucker2056.com/), a game very heavily inspired by the early MicroProse/Origin games and aimed specifically at the crowd who loved (and still loves) the games of that era.

rintakumpu··on Reasons medieval people slept in cupboards
No, they are not. Imagine some construction work with heavy drilling outside your bedroom window.
rintakumpu··on Reasons medieval people slept in cupboards
Make it soundproof and take my money.
rintakumpu··on NASA clears the air: No evidence that UFOs are aliens
Hey, aliens aren't stupid! They know that we've got more cameras nowadays and are more careful because of it.
rintakumpu··on The Mysterious Airships of 1896-97 (2014)
Chums of Chance.
rintakumpu··on Running a movie theater is more expensive than you can possibly imagine
From moviegoers point-of-view it has made a world of difference. For a smaller release the number of film copies we had in circulation here in Finland was miniscule and there was no chance of seeing those movies outside the bigger cities. With DCPs we've seen a resurgence of independent and/or countryside cinemas.
rintakumpu··on Why do studios use Roman numerals in the copyright notice in the end credits?
Yes, this would be my hypothesis too. I see Hollywood epics all the way from D.W. Griffith (and the studios that made them) wanting to broadcast an aura of gravitas. And nothing does that like using pretentious Roman numerals. Of course it's all convention nowadays.
rintakumpu··on The otherworldly compositions of an Ethiopian nun
Yup, sounds like a Rob Zombie song.
rintakumpu··on Deer don't regrow antlers the way lower animals regrow limbs
If you want to differentiate between mammals and other vertebrates you could simply say "other vertebrates".
rintakumpu··on Early morning university classes linked to poor sleep and academic performance
Personal anecdote. I remember dragging myself to measure theory classes at 8am and constantly struggling with the material, even if I'd had a good night's sleep. After a few weeks I called quits on this insanity and switched to self-study, breezing through the course.
rintakumpu··on Contracts you should never sign
Exactly this, and they are ubiquitous. With software I think it might be a slightly different matter as the company mighy have access to software you couldn't otherwise afford. But it's a red flag anyways ... why would you ever want to work for someone who'd want to claim ownership to something that is clearly not theirs?
rintakumpu··on 1min high-intensity exercise 3x a week improves fitness as much as 3x aerobics (2016)
As a former national-level 10km runner I can very much second this training regimen. However if your starting point is sedentary you are probably better off doing something that you like and can commit to, be it high-intensity or otherwise. Studies like these are important in showing various tradeoffs but shouldn't be used blindly and prescriptively.
rintakumpu··on Ask HN: Do you hate software engineering but love programming?
Definitely. Though there are exceptions. Led Zeppelin comes to mind first.
rintakumpu··on What does the land under Antarctica’s ice sheet look like?
I immediately thought of that story as I saw the map! Sad the del Toro movie never got made.
rintakumpu··on Some Remarks on Large Language Models
Don't understand the downvotes but I do disagree. What the industry needs is not overtly racist hiring practises but rather people who are aware of these issues and have the know-how and the power to address them.

I'll take an example. I'm making an adventure/strategy game that is set in the 90s Finland. We had a lot of Somali refugees coming from the Soviet Union back then and to reflect that I've created a female Somali character who is unable to find employment due to the racist attitudes of the time.

I'm using DALL-E 2 to create some template graphics for the game and using the prompt "somali middle aged female pixel art with hijab" produces some real monstrosities https://imgur.com/a/1o2CEi9 whereas "nordic female middle age minister short dark hair pixel art portrait pixelated smiling glasses" produces exclusively decent results https://imgur.com/a/ag2ifqi .

I'm an extremely privileged white, middle-aged, straight cis male and I'm able to point out a problem. Of course I'm not against hiring minorities, just saying that you don't need to belong to any minority group to spot the biases.

rintakumpu··on Worst Opening Sentences of 2022
Yes. And I was so happy when Squid Game didn't do that.
rintakumpu··on Inter-brain sync occurs without physical copresence during online gaming
Play with a deck of cards instead of dice! 36 cards, six sevens, five eights and sixes and so on.
rintakumpu··on How to identify and misidentify a brown recluse spider (2005)
The absolute tolerable maximum of legs is six. Two or four is preferred.
rintakumpu··on David Foster Wallace’s final attempt to make art moral
Entertainment, addiction, corporate-sponsored years and tennis. It’s still pretty relevant!
rintakumpu··on David Foster Wallace’s final attempt to make art moral
I was so immersed in the book on my first read-through I ended up skipping the footnotes because I found jumping between them and the main text a bit jarring. At that point I was certain I’d read this one again so it was also fun to have something saved up for later!
rintakumpu··on David Foster Wallace’s final attempt to make art moral
The first time I read Infinite Jest I was expecting something as inaccessible as Ulysses or Gravity’s Rainbow but ended up finding the book pretty readable and a total delight. And but so I would highly recommend it, just take the off-beat sci-fi setting at face value and skip the footnotes if you feel like you want to focus on the story. You can always return to those later.
rintakumpu··on Cinema’s greatest scene: ‘Casablanca’ and ‘La Marseillaise’ (2015)
I just (re)watched Heat last night and when I saw this article/thread I immediately thought of that scene! BTW there’s a sequel novel coming out in couple of weeks https://www.amazon.com/Heat-2-Novel-Michael-Mann/dp/00626533...
rintakumpu··on Russia Pulls Out All the Stops to Find Fresh Troops
I’d guess not. Ivanovich is the patronym of the pseudonym, the full pseudonym thus being Kirill Ivanovich Krechetov. Unless you meant Krasnodarski Krai which refers to a place, not a person.
rintakumpu··on Bayesian Data Analysis, Third Edition [pdf]
Lecture videos to go with it https://aalto.cloud.panopto.eu/Panopto/Pages/Sessions/List.a....
rintakumpu··on Time Travelers
I'd highly recommend "Gödel's Proof" by Ernest Nagel and James Newman (https://www.amazon.com/G%C3%B6dels-Proof-Ernest-Nagel/dp/081...). It'll probably require a bit of patience to go through, but should be fairly accessible to reader without an extensive mathematics background.
rintakumpu··on Software development and screen readers at 450 words per minute
Finnish has highly regular pronunciation with almost 1-to-1 correspondance between letters and sounds. In the first clip English is read as if it was Finnish, using Finnish pronunciation rules. Works pretty well as Finnish would be pronounced correctly and for Finnish speaker it's quite easy to catch Finnish pronunciations of foreign words.
rintakumpu··on How Teletext and Ceefax are coming back from the dead
Here's the online version of Finland's national public-broadcasting company's teletext: http://www.yle.fi/tekstitv/txt/P100_01.html

The UI of its guide to the Rio games (http://www.yle.fi/tekstitv/txt/P602_01.html) is actually wildly preferable to the web version (http://yle.fi/urheilu/rio_2016).
