We also have a provincial auto insurer, SGI. The prices for car insurance in Alberta or Ontario are ludicrous in comparison. The power and natural gas crowns are decent, as far as I can tell.

I'm not sure if federal crowns would be any better, but some competition would be a start.
After almost being physically ejected from a secure data centre because a member of my group used nmap to see if a port was open, I recommend starting with telnet. :)
A wide nmap is probably going to trigger an IDS, and then you get to meet interesting people and answer interesting questions.
Me too. But sometimes I read too many snarky HN comments and I forget.
We are very fortunate.

I'd love to see someone do the same for Capcom vs SNK 2, but a guy can dream, right? :)
I remember people getting pulled in by DevRy and similar. Places that I thought massively oversold the outcomes people would receive. I don't rate the education that highly, but you can't fault an individual for trying.

"Naivete can also be detected in my supposition that it would take something as melodramatic as a near-miss nuclear conflict to nudge England toward fascism. Although in fairness to myself and David, there were no better or more accurate predictions of our country’s future available in comic form at that time. The simple fact that much of the historical background of the story proceeds from a predicted Conservative defeat in the 1982 General Election should tell you how reliable we were in our role as Cassandras. It’s 1988 now. Margaret Thatcher is entering her third term of office and talking confidently of an unbroken Conservative leadership well into the next century. My youngest daughter is seven and the tabloid press are circulating the idea of concentration camps for persons with AIDS. The new riot police wear black visors, as do their horses, and their vans have rotating video cameras mounted on top. The government has expressed a desire to eradicate homosexuality, even as an abstract concept, and one can only speculate as to which minority will be the next legislated against. I’m thinking of taking my family and getting out of this country soon, sometime over the next couple of years. It’s cold and it’s mean-spirited and I don’t like it here anymore."
I always felt the same way about ACM programming contests. I had to go back days later and figure out what detail I was missing that made my solutions incorrect.
Your last two points contradict your first two. There's nothing unique about a government's ability to make terrible decisions. I'd say one difference is that private enterprises typically go under if the mistake is big enough, and they have no great interest in telling the public about their mistakes.
