rickdale··on The porn industry is in a bind
Back in the day, when porn was in the big online bubble state, sites would offer over $.50/click to their site. When I first started (ab)using that system, the sites immediately bumped it to $.25/click and then $.10/click, and now I think its like $.000034/click, or basically nothing. They would also give you additional money for actual sign ups, and had a bonus day on every month where you made a significant amount more for sign ups.

Ultimately I think I cashed in like $7000 when I was 12 before shit hit the fan and the company my buddy and I were using sent him a check that bounced. It was tough explaining it to our parents, but ultimately everyone knew about alladvantage and we would always say it was something similar to that. We also cashed in on alladvantage, I think it was $20/month just to have the thing on for a few hours.

rickdale··on Did three men actually survive the escape from Alcatraz?
It's evident to me after watching the History channel special that no traces of bodies were found because they in fact did survive. It's at the very least extremely plausible. The family provides a photo and looking at the details the evidence is there for me.
rickdale··on Did three men actually survive the escape from Alcatraz?
Actually that History channel show already premiered. That's where the article gets the information. The show was decent for what its worth. It gives some pretty good evidence that those boys survived the escape and has the US Marshals on it and stuff. At least worth fast forwarding through
rickdale··on Cannabis Access and Academic Performance
I want to note that this is how THC can effect academic performance. There are other compounds in marijuana other than THC and although THC is the leading compound in most cannabis, in the medical cannabis world there are certain strains like Cannatonic that will test 0%THC with 10-20%CBD. CBD is not like THC and has a lot of different medical benefits associated with it.

rickdale··on “Tsundoku,” the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves
Good point! Sometimes the most obvious things just need to be pointed out for me to be like, eureka!

Do you use the grippers?

rickdale··on Peeple sites 'disappear' from web after backlash over app
John Oliver talked about this site last night on his show. What caught my attention is that it seemed like the founders were clueless, but I only know it from the show.

rickdale··on Show HN: Cancel your Comcast in 5 minutes
Best deal for upgrading phone. Companies change from 2 year contract to no contract to whatever. I would like to pay $5 to just break it all down.
rickdale··on “Tsundoku,” the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves
I actually have tried this. I own the iron mind grippers and can successfully close the second one 3-4 reps. But ultimately I have pain that comes back when I start to hold a book, especially a large one.
rickdale··on “Tsundoku,” the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves
I like to sit in la-z-boy with lamp overhead. I usually hold book in my left hand, but I am liking some of the suggestions here.
rickdale··on “Tsundoku,” the Japanese Word for the New Books That Pile Up on Our Shelves
Since I am assuming readers will look at this page, can someone explain to me how to hold a book without pain? I didn't read too much as a kid and I wonder if I just didn't build up the right muscles, but now, I like to read big books, but my forearm and fingers start to hurt from holding it. I have looked up different ways to hold books, but I haven't found anything yet that I like.

This is what I like the ipad for. I don't like the idea of the ipad, but reading in the dark and pain free in hard to beat.

I suggest motivation. This slow cognitive process thing just sounds like an excuse, do the best you can in that moment and forget this story about slow cognitive processes.

rickdale··on Ask HN: What's your 1-man startup?
Very interesting. Thanks for sharing. When you say you are no novice to advertising, care to share a few tips? Thanks!
rickdale··on College students are now smoking more pot than cigarettes
I was a huge pot head when I went to college. Smoked weed through pretty much all of high school and had some traumatic events happen that lead me to it for medication. In high school I was considered an outcast. I was the only sophomore to ever consider taking AP Comp Sci(true rebel here...) and generally the kids drank alot.

But when I got to college, I gave up the weed and focused on the programming and outside my comfort zone stuff. And then I was in an advanced comp sci class, working with a smart dude and he paused, and said, "Toke up, get food and get back at it?" Then, for the first time ever my world was opened to programmers that smoke weed. And it was like a moment of, "holy shit I can be normal here."

Marijuana can be a blessing or a curse. All in your relationship with it. I advise using it for the benefits, and not abusing it for escape.

rickdale··on ‘Pharmacy of the developing world’ under attack from the US, EU, Japan
This is funny because I am literally on the phone with my bank to get them to lift the block on the charge for indian provigil. I didn't realize this was a big thing, but I am excited to try the provigil. I did ask my doctor for it for what its worth, but he said its too expensive to prescribe to me. I don't have insurance...
rickdale··on Modafinil for cognitive neuroenhancement: a systematic review
I recently started to take adderall at 28 years of age. My doctor told me that they found out that at least 1/3 of the adderall will still be working the next day, and 1/3 of that the day after. And the 1/3 was the at least number. So he told me to take it intermittently and not every day. I do really like that stuff, although I have had 1 or 2 bad experiences, for the most part it makes me feel normal and relaxed.

Also, my doctor told me my diet will greatly affect how the adderall works in my body. And that really rang true to me. I usually eat pretty lean, so 10mg, or even 5mg is enough for an effective dose for me.

I tried to get provigil from the same doctor and he couldn't even believe I would ask for it, said it was too expensive to prescribe to someone like me.

rickdale··on Cameron's World
I just had to imp my car. Did a quick google search read the first two steps and then bam I was hit with a screen taking over advertisement that took me 15-30secknds to get off of my screen. The first thing that I thought was, "damn the Internet sucks." And I was let referring to my connection.
rickdale··on Apes may be closer to speaking than many scientists think
There was a monkey experiment called Project Nim with a documentary about. The footage in that movie is amazing. They used to sit in smoke circles and pass the joint to the chimpanzee. Ultimately the story turned sad when the funding for the research was pulled and I know this is about apes, but I am just saying animals are capable of much more than we think.

rickdale··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
Disregard the reviews. Trust me. Take a leap of faith and check it out. I don't have a magazine body, but I did lose 50lbs 4 years ago already and they aren't coming back.

It's faterday saturday btw, "on top of the world eating doughnuts, its a mother fucking cheat day, so what?" -Murs

rickdale··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
Yes! I haven't read any of his books all the way through, and I do find a lot of the podcast stuff pretentious. But this book changed my life, some of my friends lives and some of my family members. I think its a great start to learning to eat healthy and the easiest way to lose weight for sure. Let me know if you tinker with the diet, I would be interested in your results.
rickdale··on How I Failed, Failed, and Finally Succeeded at Learning How to Code
Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try Again. Fail again. Fail better.

Samuel Beckett

rickdale··on Monkey the Cat Hunts for Dinner
Book recommendations from random hn users has changed my life. 4 hour body in particular.

For dog training I really like Michael Ellis from Leerburg.com. His free videos are really all you need, some of the paid dvds can be repetitive, but ultimately he keeps up with the latest trends and I think is amazing with dogs. Everyone has their own theory it seems though..

rickdale··on To combat falling ratings, TV networks are increasing ads up to 10%
No surprise TV ratings are falling. The graphical user interface for my cable has to be over a decade old and zero updates have ever been done to it. DVR is an alright option, but I always pass right into the show, and on some networks it disables! fast-forward.

As ESPN continues down the road of being unwatchable, I honestly think the only thing carrying cable television in America is football. This year the NFL will broadcast one game over the internet. If, or rather when, that becomes the norm, cable subscriptions are going to drop at a faster rate than they are now. I enjoy being able to put something on really fast, but cable television reminds of the music industry as CD's died.

rickdale··on The Electric Car
My big qualm with the electric cars that I don't read about is the 40minute-1hour charging. People complain that charging stations aren't near them, but the convenience of pulling into a gas station filling up and being ready for another 400 miles in less than 5 minutes is hard to beat. Even if the charging stations were all around, 5 versus 40-60 min is a big difference.
rickdale··on The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Tesla Model S P85D Road Trip
Everything is impressive about Tesla. I am sure it will get better in the future, but I would go crazy having to wait 40+ minutes for my car to charge during a road trip.
rickdale··on Colorado’s Effort Against Teenage Pregnancies Is a Startling Success
This is interesting because I always claim that the reverse is true where I live. Like, getting pregnant is glorified to young girls. The conspiracy theorist in me says that the gov does that to occupy peoples lives. It's like, they have nothing better to do so lets make having a baby seem like the greatest thing in the world. So in my view, this goes both ways.
rickdale··on The Effects of Intermittent Fasting on Human and Animal Health
July 2 marked 2 years straight only eating from 6pm-10pm with bullet-proof coffee sometimes during the day. I grew up always needing food and I can attest that my body adapted to eating this way and totally changed when I started eating this way in the sense of strength and lean muscle. Generally I eat pretty clean, lots vegetables meat beans and lentils, with a cheat day once per week, but always within my eating window.

I try to drink a lot of water during the day too. I am conscious that the water is reverse osmosis and then I'll add a pinch of celtic sea salt, some apple cider vinegar, and lemon. I also use active h2 tablets which I highly recommend.

rickdale··on Ask HN: Share your best personal productivity tips and tricks
Tim Hortons coffee.
rickdale··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
Haven't checked out either site, but nothing wrong with a little competition.
rickdale··on Death of a Programmer, Life of a Farmer
I live in the country. Most of the year I can get food from farms that are located less than 2 miles from me, all on my street. It's phenomenal. The closest decent grocery store is an hour plus, so its nice to be able to get stuff from neighbors and it makes you eat healthy.
rickdale··on What If Students Could Fire Their Professors?
When I was studying CS in undergrad I took an upper level CS course that was suppose to end with learning assembly and building something with it. The class for whatever reason moved excruciatingly slow and we never got past the second or third project. The following semester my advisor who was also a cs professor pulled me aside and asked me, "what the heck happened in that class?" And after my answer he said he would take care of it.

For whatever its worth the professor that was teaching the class was and still is the head of the department. And the other professor I confided in retired the following year and moved to Florida. Probably unrelated, but I can see department politics fixing the issue of poorly taught classes.
