rhubarbquid··on The JOBS Act will very nearly legalize fraud in the stock market
Assuming there's anything left to sue for...
rhubarbquid··on The JOBS Act will very nearly legalize fraud in the stock market
When you order a pizza it doesn't exist at the time you order. That doesn't change the fact that you're purchasing a product.

Though I think with kickstarter you're technically making a donation. Either way I don't see how that could affect your taxes (other than sales tax) unless you're backing something you want use as a deduction...

Among their list of prohibited items is "Financial incentives (ownership, share of profits, repayment/loans, etc)".

I suspect existing law forbids them from selling equity.

rhubarbquid··on FBI, stumped by pimp's Android pattern lock, serves warrant on Google
Not even the network carrier should be able to tell the duration of a web page visit. Only the browser (or tracking javascript) could record this, but that's still dubious. I've had some browser tabs open on my phone for months... but that doesn't mean I've been constantly looking at them for months. I doubt Android keeps a big database of every page you visit and how long it takes you to close the page or navigate away. I guess Google Analytics might have some of that data, but only for sites that use GA.
rhubarbquid··on Why Apple's New Campus Is Bad for Urban America
Don't forget that Google's headquarters is in a sprawling campus near the suburbs in Mountain View... with a small Microsoft campus near by. Your hypothetical "hipster" choosing between Google, Microsoft, and Apple in the bay area is choosing between bland suburbs and bland suburbs.

Google also buses people in from San Francisco... which you have to admit beats the hell out of having them all drive in... or even take up seats on public transit for that matter.

rhubarbquid··on How PayPal and Apple’s Fraud Policies Punish the Honest User
> On second thought, why do you even need an account to update the software?

From what I can tell, it seems to be largely based on having a record that you've checked the box that says you've read their legal agreements.

> Perhaps PirateBay, the EFF, or another consumer-oriented entity might be interested in sponsoring such an anonymizing service?

They do, or did in the case of EFF, it's called Tor.

rhubarbquid··on Dotsies: Font using dots instead of letters - Optimized for reading, not writing
Where does "without punctuation" come in to it? They say "Numbers and punctuation aren't altered." Sure enough, the bookmarklet doesn't remove punctuation.

Also, the bookmarklet seems to skip over paragraphs that have a character they can't represent. I tried it on your post and the paragraph with the 'ñ's wasn't altered.

rhubarbquid··on Cathode: A terminal app for mac that looks really cool
I've used the osx terminal for "real work" every day for about 6 years now...
rhubarbquid··on Twitter releases new JS template engine: hogan.js
No, it responds with a redirect:

    $ curl http://goo.gl/OCK7V
    <HTML>
    <HEAD>
    <TITLE>Moved Permanently</TITLE>
    </HEAD>
    <BODY BGCOLOR="#FFFFFF" TEXT="#000000">
    <H1>Moved Permanently</H1>
    The document has moved <A HREF="http://twitter.github.com/hogan.js/1.0.0/hogan.js">here    </A>.
    </BODY>
    </HTML>
Edit: I suppose the headers are more important:

    $ curl -I http://goo.gl/OCK7V
    HTTP/1.1 301 Moved Permanently
    Content-Type: text/html; charset=UTF-8

rhubarbquid··on Ask HN: How should I optimize images for iPhone/iPad app?
Seems like this is something your developer should be answering for you.
rhubarbquid··on Report of Data Protection Audit of Facebook Ireland —Commissioner
Ah ha, their site doesn't play well with the built in popup blocker in Chrome and Safari.
rhubarbquid··on Report of Data Protection Audit of Facebook Ireland —Commissioner
Can you actually view the report?

Maybe I'm missing something, but clicking on the "Report" link just appears to reload the page.

rhubarbquid··on Google out-Appling Apple at the browser
I'm pretty sure iOS used to have a single search/URL input, but they separated them out in later releases.
rhubarbquid··on Google: Let it snow
It works including the defrost effect on my iPad...
rhubarbquid··on TextMate 2
Holy wars are pointless... but there is value to a reasonable discussion of two competing editors.
rhubarbquid··on Universal Censors Megaupload Song, Gets Branded a “Rogue Label”
My understanding (though I'm not a lawyer) is that under the DMCA, Megavideo can sue. [edit: like dangrossman says, I don't think they can bring perjury charges, but the DMCA does allow them to sue]

rhubarbquid··on Download.com Response to Nmap Offer Bundling
So are they saying they only intended to bundle the crapware with closed source software, or am I misunderstanding?
rhubarbquid··on I swapped my MacBook for an iPad+Linode
I wouldn't call the mobile support in Reader "frist rate". Some of the UI elements (especially the "mark as read", "email", etc. links at the bottom of each post) are too small, I constantly expand the next post when trying to email one. A small detail, but one that drives me crazy.
rhubarbquid··on Show HN: my one-day project, Trnsfr
Yes, they charge for sending and receiving.
rhubarbquid··on Google+ is now available with Google Apps
I'd guess not much. Most people who wanted to use G+ already signed up with a Gmail account. Unless you're counting one person maintaining personal and professional profiles as 2 active accounts...
rhubarbquid··on Google+ is now available with Google Apps
They also recently dropped the free version to 10 accounts instead of 50.
rhubarbquid··on We Can All Become Job Creators
or "lender" in the context of this article.
rhubarbquid··on We Can All Become Job Creators
Yeah, I have the same concern. "Americans themselves would start lending to small businesses" and " Starbucks customers would be able to donate money to the effort when they bought their coffee." don't really agree with each other. Donating isn't lending.

On the other hand, lending isn't a sure thing. We might be talking about people getting their $0 back from their $1 investment if the borrower defaults.

rhubarbquid··on Show HN: My network connection monitor for Mac
It's probably checking for updated help files. Apple regularly uses Akamai's CDN.
rhubarbquid··on Ask HN: What programming blogs do you read daily?
At first, I assumed it was some programming language I had never heard of ;-)
rhubarbquid··on Spotify now requires a Facebook account to sign up.
Is Spotify going to start giving a discount on subscriptions for all this marketing/advertising information they're pushing to Facebook?
rhubarbquid··on Spotify now requires a Facebook account to sign up.
Assuming Spotify is not run by stupid people, money would be the obvious reason (and the only one I can think of off hand).
rhubarbquid··on Facebook is scaring me
How is Spotify "neutered" without Facebook? I've never connected it to Facebook and everything works fine for me, including sharing playlists with other users.
rhubarbquid··on No Windows 8 ARM support for x86 apps
yeah, office 2008 was the first native x86 version, IIR (and I swear it takes longer to start up then the PPC version of 2004 did under Rosetta, which is just ridiculous).
