rexf··on Ask HN: What has your personal website/blog done for you?
Yeah, I enjoy writing blog posts, but not on a routine schedule. My blog has some light traffic, but it has not been game changing as some other commenters have experienced. It can be an issue of topic/depth since I blog about a variety of topics and not deep dives.
rexf··on What does "Copy clean link" mean?
I built a Mac menu bar app for cleaning your clipboard https://apps.apple.com/us/app/id1528299767 It removes common tracking for the URL in the clipboard

It also works on iPhone via the shared Universal Clipboard

rexf··on School dental program prevents 80% of cavities with non-invasive treatment
Yup, sadly many of them (in greater Los Angeles area) tend to over "find" cavities so they can put money in their pocket. This is not ethical, but I've had different dentists do this and I simply left for another dentist.
rexf··on NYC Slice
The site consistently crashes in Firefox v108.0.2 (64-bit) on macOS Monterey v12.6.
rexf··on UPS and the package wars
From the article:

> As Shatan noted, in a recent report on delivery companies’ performance, UPS came out on top, with an on-time-delivery rate of ninety-seven per cent.

rexf··on Musk’s Boring Company Ghosts Cities Across America
How much of The Boring Company is an excuse to sell novelty branded merch? Such as the Not-a-flamethrower https://www.boringcompany.com/not-a-flamethrower
rexf··on Apple sends DSID with iPhone analytics data, tests show
While Apple is not considered an advertising company today, they have been growing services revenue for the past several years. Part of that is growth in ads (3rd party ads in app store, 1st party ads in the OS, iAd [discontinued], etc).

Even if rank and file Apple employees do not want to grow ads in iOS/App Store, clearly Apple leadership wants to sell more ads (and increase their services revenue). At App Store scale, their volume of ads is not trivial.

rexf··on Update on Supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
I was interested in the 14+ for a family member, but the pricing is awful. I'd rather go up to the 14 Pro or look into the 13 series (same phone for less).
rexf··on The smash and grab of Kroger-Albertsons
> they can't even have more than 2-3 checkout lanes open

Long lines at limited checkout lines is awful. Supermarkets do it because they don't want to hire more staff. Consumers notice it and will shop elsewhere... unless they live in a place where there are no nearby competing supermarkets.

rexf··on Apple unveils redesigned iPad
Yeah, Apple has normalized misleading marketing speak.

Here's one from 2017 about the iPhone

> iPhone X: Apple's new 'edge-to-edge' screen includes strange notch at the top

> The screen doesn't actually go edge-to-edge, despite descriptions that refer to it that way. Or rather, it goes to three of the edges – leaving a little cut-out at the top, where the screen can't quite reach to the top of the display.

rexf··on GeForce RTX 40 Series
ah ok. Thanks, I didn't realize they used (deceased) famous people for all their architectures
rexf··on GeForce RTX 40 Series
> They're powered by the ultra-efficient NVIDIA Ada Lovelace architecture

Why is this megacorp using this famous person's name for marketing? Does the 40XX series have anything to do with Ada Lovelace at all?

(Yes I know Ada Lovelace passed away a long time ago so the name is probably free to use without paying her estate.)

rexf··on Show HN: I may have created a new type of puzzle
Yeah, this was fun to solve.

Re: 2, it seems intentional when two occupy the same space, 1 of them gets priority and has to be moved first? Ideally, you could pick which 1 of the 2 you could move, but removing this choice makes the puzzle harder.

Re: 3, I don't like the flashing lights/colors at all. Putting a "You win" or "Congrats" <div> somewhere prominent on the page is probably enough. Flashing colors is very painful on the eyes.

rexf··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
Migrating off your primary e-mail provider with over a decade of history is not trivial. I could do it if I devoted a a lot of painful time to it.

For non-technical family & friends? Forget about it.

rexf··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
This is a good point.

2FA is a great thing and I think everyone should use it.

With that said, I don't want 2FA on my alternate/testing/dev accounts. I simply don't want demo accounts linked to my phone number. I'd like to opt-out of "standard security" (MFA) and accept the risks on non-primary accounts.

rexf··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
E-mail as online identity is both convenient and a huge source of risk (if Google's automated system goes wrong).

I wonder if Google could offer real customer support. I know offering support goes against everything Google stands for, but I'm sure many people would be willing to pay non-trivial amounts of money to get actual support from Google.

So if you unfortunately get locked out of your google account, you could pay for support that can actually resolve your issue.

(I realize paying to fix your problem may rub some people the wrong way. However, I would rather pay for a support ticket than be locked out of my account forever.)

rexf··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
Websites & apps treat your e-mail or phone number as your identity. Is it ideal? No, but it's reality.

Until everyone can agree on a better system, your e-mail is your online identity across countless websites. This makes losing your e-mail (with no customer support to regain access) a huge vulnerability in everyone's personal life.

rexf··on iPhone 14 Pro Camera Review: Scotland
I have the iPhone 13 Pro, and I wish Apple would fix the Live Photos video flash bug https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/live-photo-flashing-exp...

This is a first world problem: the flash that appears in their flagship Live Photos photo/video feature has ruined some great vacation photos that were hard to take.

I don't know if this is fixed in the iPhone 14 / iOS 16.

rexf··on Can the American mall survive?
Depending on the mall (Westfield Valley Fair), parking can be so bad for many years now that we avoid the mall completely. While the parking lot can be near capacity (mall is popular), we still avoid it (parking is too hard to find).
rexf··on We’ll Miss You, MetroCard Machine
As a former NYC resident who primarily walked & took the subway, I have no fondness for the MetroCard machines. Using the machines to refill my balance was a clunky (or at best adequate) experience.

Seems like the author is nostalgic since the machines are being replaced.

rexf··on USB 4 version 2 promises 80 Gbps speeds over existing cables
There are countless companies making USB/similar cables. They are a commodity and it's hard for them to stand out.

So I use brand (Anker, amazon basics, Apple, etc) and store (amazon.com, best buy, target, etc) to narrow down the countless cable options.

rexf··on One kitchen, hundreds of internet restaurants
Yeah, while I don't work in the food industry. As an app developer, I know what it's like to be at the mercy of ASO (for the App Store) and it's not fun.

Perhaps it makes financial sense for an existing (non-ghost) restaurants. They can expand their revenue, keep their kitchen busy, etc. So anyone from your local mom n' pop burger place to big chains (IHOP, Applebee's, etc) can run several ghost kitchen brands to increase kitchen utilization.

rexf··on Google Timer is back
It will only come back if the universe runs in a loop.
rexf··on NYC Fire Department forcible entry reference guide [pdf] (2006)
Seeing all these tools & explanations is amazing.

Wonder if someone could make a fun firefighter video game about breaking into various properties using this PDF. The game would focus on gaining forcible access (so the first responder could save the day).

rexf··on PayPal phishing scam uses invoices sent via PayPal
I've had similar experiences where I got charged by amazon for Prime & wasn't sure what it was. They certainly make it hard to find your payment history for Prime renewal.
rexf··on How to access Reddit without ads and tracking
The groupthink mentality has gotten way out of hand.

While you might think a subreddit is a place for fans of X topic to gather, it seems to end up as a place for superfans to gather. This can be a problem since their viewpoints are extreme and niche.

Instead of merely enjoying topic X and thinking of X in generally positive thoughts, the superfans treat topic X as the BEST EVER. Any discussion of X's shortcomings is met with downvotes or negative comments.

rexf··on MacBook Air M1 screen crack for no apparent reason
This. Hoping it's fixed on the latest version is wishful thinking.

Apple tends to downplay and/or ignore issues. Sometimes they don't have to do anything and other times, they offer a repair program.

rexf··on Browser password managers – flawed security, by design
I use GV, but it's really tough to use with many sites. Many sites will detect the non-cellphone (virtual) nature of the number and require a different (cellphone backed) number.

Yesterday, I put my GV number in the DALL·E sign up and it wouldn't let me proceed. So I abandoned the sign up flow.

rexf··on Xbox has accused Sony of paying Game Pass 'block fees' to developers
I don't see a problem with Sony (or MS/Nintendo/Apple/etc) paying game developers to keep their games exclusive to a platform. Game creators make decisions on where to put their games and how to monetize.

Epic Games is notorious for giving "free games" where consumers get the game for free, but EG is paying the publisher/developer behind the scenes. So the game creators are getting paid.

rexf··on Ask HN: Is living in NYC worth it?
Yeah, moving to NYC doesn't have to be permanent.

I moved there for a few years and enjoyed it. I couldn't see myself staying in NYC forever, so I'm glad I spent some time there and left.
