revicon··on My productivity app for the past 12 years has been a single .txt file
A while back I fell out of love with Evernote and migrated all my years of notes out to txt files which are synced to Dropbox. Huge nested folder structures but easily searched via grep or whatever. And then I have a folder called “Captains Log” and I make txt files for as many things as I can during the day. Code snippets, reminders to buy eggs at the store, urls to some dumb thing I want to remember to read later on but can’t bother with right now. Often the only content of the txt file is the title and no content if it was just a quick jot. And now you can use the Dropbox app edit txt files directly inside it which makes for easy note taking when mobile. Been using this method for years now, still going strong.

That got remapped to control a long time ago for me. Will never be able to have it be anything else now.

> If I had one with a physical escape key

This is why I bought a Macbook Air, they still have a physical escape key and my vim muscle movements will not allow me to remap that key anywhere else.

BTW The 16inch Macbook Pros also have a physical escape key now, to the left of the touchbar.

Wow, this is something that's been bugging me constantly. Thanks for the tip.

I also have a t480, mines running Ubuntu but unfortunately I’m giving it up for a new MacBook Air. The touchpads on the thinkpads are beyond horrible after using macs for many years, it’s finally too annoying for me to keep going :(

revicon··on Ask HN: Are books worth it?
Weird, the Wikipedia book order and the Goodreads order don't match...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Revelation_Space_universe

https://www.goodreads.com/series/56392-revelation-space

When in doubt I'm heading over to the author's website...

http://www.alastairreynolds.com/novels/

His take on this is: " The reading order isn’t that critical, in my view, but it probably improves things to read REVELATION SPACE, REDEMPTION ARK and ABSOLUTION GAP in that sequence. THE PREFECT (AURORA RISING) and ELYSIUM FIRE may be read alone or jointly, but should best be read in the above order. CHASM CITY, as well as the collections DIAMOND DOGS, TURQUOISE DAYS and GALACTIC NORTH, can be read at any point."

For me, I maxed out all the Sci-Fi movies and TV shows out there and wanted more and discovered early on that Sci-Fi books are 1000 times better than whats out there in movie land. My problem is I have a hard time keeping track of where I am in all the book series I've been reading as new books sometimes take a year or more to come out depending on the authors.

Here's a couple resources I recommend...

https://www.reddit.com/r/printSF - Sci-fi book subreddit

https://www.goodreads.com/list/tag/sci-fi - Sci-fi books on Goodreads

https://www.scifibooklove.com - My (small) sci-fi book review site

Why do you think the US has space superiority? Currently the US has no capability to send humans into space, we use the Russian Soyuz program for this.

I don't understand why this isn't launching with data api support? AWS specifically built data apis into the Aurora Serverless product for this exact usecase...

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonRDS/latest/AuroraUserGuide...

If I'm using Aurora Serverless right now and want to switch over to RDS Proxy I'm going to have to rewrite my calls.

revicon··on It’s crunch time for Getty Images, and for photographers
There are so many free stock photo sites out there these days that I can't understand why anyone would be hitting Getty up for anything. The quality across the free sites can vary but some are incredibly good. I made a list of about 50 a year ago, there's probably twice that number now.

revicon··on Ask HN: How to easily transfer files between devices
Agreed. Unless you're moving around huge files, dropbox does this very well. Run the client on your linux and mac boxes and install the app on your iphone. Files are backed up to the cloud and available on all devices. All my txt notes, photos, and other files I care about are on dropbox and available on any device I want them to be.

And it's easy to share out individual files or folders from dropbox so others can access them.

revicon··on Ask HN: How to easily transfer files between devices
I think I'm not understanding how you would access files on an iphone via SMB.

revicon··on Uncomfortable AWS Truths
no, you can set your cname to the s3 bucket's url in your registrar's dns settings...

https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/dev/VirtualHosti...

You can also use cloudfront to do SSL if you need it.

Note: If you're really only need to host a static website and want SSL for free, Github static hosting will give you all that for free. https://pages.github.com/

revicon··on Uncomfortable AWS Truths
Why use route 53 vs your registrar’s dns? Or use Cloudflare, it’s free
revicon··on Please Add RSS Support to Your Site
Twitter, Facebook and Reddit have become the new RSS readers for the masses. I get it, having an open distributed web would be a great thing but that ship has sailed, walled gardens are the new web for 99% of internet users. If your blog post is interesting enough to get picked up and shared via social networks, people will see it in their feed and hop over to view your post.

After someone has finished scrolling down their Facebook, Twitter and reddit feeds, they’re ready to start that loop all over again. There isn’t a place in most peoples mental bandwidth for adding an RSS reader to that mix. And I was a heavy consumer of RSS via Google Reader and then Feedly when GR was axed. This post just reminded me that when I got a new phone I never even bothered to install Feedly again. Totally off my radar at this point, and if that’s the case, there’s no way someone less geeky than me is going to start picking it up.

revicon··on Ask HN: Best Linux Laptop Replacing a Macbook Pro?
I also switched from a Macbook Pro to a Thinkpad T480 running Ubuntu 18.04. Everything except the fingerprint reader worked out of the box, I haven't had any hardware compatibility issues so far, been running for 2 months so far. I picked the T480 because it was the last one with a removable battery.

Initially I installed dualboot w/ the existing windows install, but after a week I found there was no reason to flip back to windows and I formatted the whole thing and re-installed Ubuntu.

I've been using Macs for development for so long that I'd forgotten what using a non-mac keyboard was like. Took a couple days to get used to it, but now there's no way I'm ever going back.

revicon··on Updating our advertising policies on state media
In the US, the problem is most of our large media is owned and operated by large corporations with a few (usually right-wing leaning) owning individuals. These corporations are also the defacto power behind our government (see $ spent on lobbyists, campaign donations, Citizens United, etc). Unfortunately these media sources aren’t going to be effected by this new policy.

But they could be! The same organizations that Twitter is using to define “state run media organizations” also keep track of US media corporation ownerships and could be tracked against ones that are attempting to slant public discourse via story selection, etc.
