revicon··on Convert curl commands to code in several languages
Why is language indifference bad? You're correct, most language differences really come down to one language using a colon, the other a semicolon, etc.

Find a problem you feel passionate about solving and then use your skills to go solve it for mankind. You've learned how to be a mason, now go build something beautiful.

revicon··on Write plain text files
I keep all my txt file notes in GitHub repos, works great for me. One thing I’m still trying to solve, taking new notes while I’m mobile. I haven’t found a good easy way to create/edit notes and commit them to git while I’m on my iPhone. The GitHub mobile app does not allow editing. The GitHub website does but it’s clumsy to use on a mobile device.

Anyone have suggestions for a solution?

revicon··on Design of a rapid transit to Mars mission using laser-thermal propulsion
I haven't seen it mentioned in this thread, but a much easier place to colonize is the atmosphere of Venus. There's a band of altitude in Venus's atmosphere where it's equal pressure to earth and you'd be able to get out and walk around with a simple oxygen mask. Huge blimps could suspend colonies in this zone (think Bespin from Star Wars).

Interesting stuff, more info: https://bigthink.com/hard-science/how-to-colonize-venus/

revicon··on Design of a rapid transit to Mars mission using laser-thermal propulsion
I think what I meant is with no magnetosphere we would all die of radiation exposure regardless if there was a terraformed atmosphere or not. Without a magnetosphere we'd all be living underground anyway, no point in terraforming.
revicon··on Design of a rapid transit to Mars mission using laser-thermal propulsion
With no magnetosphere would there even be a point to terraforming?
revicon··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
I've got no experience in shopping around for ads, was hoping you did :) My blog gets decent traffic these days, seems like I should stick an ad or two someplace so it pays for itsself.
revicon··on Ask HN: What made your business take off that you wish you'd done much earlier?
Which ad network/provider did you use for your ad? Did you shop around for the best paying one?
revicon··on Amount of Covid found in the wastewater in Boston
I am not at all an authority on this but I think they use UV light to kill it during one of the treatment steps.
revicon··on Gmail password first character is case insensitive on mobile device
I think there have been so many password breaches that most sites feel that passwords alone are insufficient for security purposes. Most users reuse passwords and if sites don't enforce 2FA they open themselves up to batch account compromises via script kiddies trying all combos found in the username/password dumps found on various haxor forums.

This is especially true for sites that provide email accounts for users on sites like yahoo which are the 2FA for many other sites a user has accounts on. Gaining access to a yahoo user's email account could allow someone to reset all their passwords on any 3rd account they used that email address for when they signed up.

revicon··on Google is giving data to police based on search keywords, court docs show
Because keyword warrants evade the Fourth Amendment checks on police surveillance and are very likely unconstitutional.

revicon··on Ask HN: Best tip for landing pages?
one of the first goals of a landing page is to pixel you so they can retarget you with ads elsewhere. If you've visited the landing page in the first place it shows the business that you've at least heard of the company, which moves you into another stage of their sales funnel.

If you actually fill out the form or take whatever action is shown on the page, that's gravy for them but a savvy marketer knows it takes at least seven touches to a lead before they're ready to convert. Landing pages are very top-of-funnel.

This is my "before" landing page...

I'm in the middle of the landing page course right now, haven't applied much of it yet.

revicon··on Ask HN: Best tip for landing pages?
There’s a huge amount of psychology in landing page design to show credibility, proof points, address common rejections, etc. I found this udemy course helpful but I’m sure there’s other resources out there. https://www.udemy.com/share/101vOq3@44_8ioaD2oSBpElrM5_5UfPj...
revicon··on What it's like to spend 40-50 hours in VR every week
For me, the problem is I wear glasses and I have no interest in switching to contact lenses. I’ve never found a car headset that worked with glasses well
revicon··on Migrating to Next.js from Create React App
I’m curious why Nextjs is needed. I’ve started just building dynamic websites rendered on the server serving the content I need search engines to be able to crawl and then I drop a js file on each page which instruments whatever components I want to use react for on top of the already rendered html page. It’s worked very well for me so far, I have webpack build one JS file for each page I want to instrument and then I write react just like I usually do. Maybe my use case is different from what Nextjs is built for.
revicon··on Amazon to remove more content that violates rules from cloud service – sources
This is addressed in the article. It’s about avoiding public relation issues when they’re found hosting stuff that someone will find offensive…

“ Better preparation against certain types of content could help Amazon avoid legal and public relations risk.

"If (Amazon) can get some of this stuff off proactively before it's discovered and becomes a big news story, there's value in avoiding that reputational damage,"

Rule of thumb is withdrawing 4% per year is a safe rate that will weather market turmoil if your assets are returning market average rates. A $1.4M portfolio will allow for a safe $56,000 withdrawal per year.
revicon··on Bill Cosby to Be Freed as Court Overturns His Sex Assault Conviction
A bit more specifically, because Cosby was no longer facing criminal charges, he was not eligible to plead the 5th amendment in the under-oath depositions he was required to make on the civil cases, so he didn't and he admitted to giving women quaaludes, etc. If the DA's office had not informed Cosby that they were dropping the criminal charges, Cosby would not have been forced to make those incriminating statements.

revicon··on Ask HN: What passive income investments exist to supplement your salary?
I think you missed mentioning the greatest thing about rental properties: You're buying the property using someone else's money (via a mortgage). There is literally no other investment besides real estate that allows you to do this.
revicon··on EFF sues Proctorio on behalf of student falsely DMCA'd

Higher level education is largely voluntary, and it's up to
the person taking it up to decide what they gain from it.
If they are only in it for a diploma, they'd get there one
  way or another.
Employers definitely use grades as a mechanism to determine who gets an internship or a full time position upon graduation, especially in the legal industry. The idea that cheaters aren't a big deal breaks down once grades have real world consequences.
revicon··on India protests US Navy ship’s transit through its waters without consent
The US media posts stories about China violating other sovereign waterways all the time. Why are we salty about China doing the same thing?
revicon··on Behind GitHub’s new authentication token formats
The ID prefixing is cool from an identification point of view, but we've been using UUIDs for tokens and if we implemented this we wouldn't be able to use the UUID optimized datatype field in Postgres.
revicon··on Ask HN: How to get a Logo/ Corporate Designs in 2021?
I've used 99 designs twice in the past, had good results both times. Curious where it's fallen down for other folks.
revicon··on Staying Out of TTL Hell
This runs afoul of the article’s warning to “ Never require a cache hit”

  It's important never to
require a cache hit - even
  as a soft requirement.
  Evictions can happen at
  inconvenient times - such
as when some other part of
the system is under load -
  and there mustn't be any
  negative consequences to a
  cache miss
If the cache does empty unexpectedly and that is going to cause your infrastructure to die in a cascade, probably some kind of fallback will be needed.

revicon··on The largest study to date on the genetic basis of sexuality (2019)
From the wikipedia article:

The mechanism is thought to be a maternal immune response to male fetuses, whereby antibodies neutralize male Y-proteins thought to play a role in sexual differentiation during development. This would leave some regions of the brain associated with sexual orientation in the 'female typical' arrangement – or attracted to men. Biochemical evidence for this hypothesis was identified in 2017, finding mothers with a gay son, particularly those with older brothers, had heightened levels of antibodies to the NLGN4Y Y-protein than mothers with heterosexual sons
