reverend_gonzo··on Husband of Amazon employee sentenced to prison for insider trading Amazon stock
If you only do it for one stock, do it for every earnings, and have a win rate of 100%, that becomes pretty obvious.

Also, by the way, they were legally not allowed to trade during those times at all, due to her specific job and the blackout period that cme with.

reverend_gonzo··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
So, I wasn’t a first time home buyer and didn’t hand holding. What I did need was an argent which was actually working for me, not just trying to close at all costs.

I think in situations where the property doesn’t have any issues, where you’re just going in to buy a place, they can work out fine. Unfortunately you have no idea what kind of place you’re looking at until you’re trying to buy it.

Every worthwhile agent will have a ton of useful information before and after you purchase.

reverend_gonzo··on If you sell a house these days, the buyer might be a pension fund
See, I used to think that maybe with the different compensation structure, Redfin agents' interested might end up being more in line with the buyers. I ended up working with one, and realized that is absolutely not the case.

First, yes, Redfin agents don't get commissions the way traditional real estates agents get commissions. However, Redfin agents do still want to close as many deals as possible. Also, while real estate agents have a tough job finding good leads (especially given that leads don't exactly keep buying property) Redfin agents do not have a tough time finding leads (they have one phenomenal website that just gives them constant leads). What it results in is that a good traditional agent will put in a lot more work to find an appropriate place for you, because not only do they rely on you buying through them, but more importantly, they rely on you being happy enough that you recommend them to other people.

Redfin does not need your recommendations, as they've got a line out the door. So if anything starts getting difficult with your purchase, Redfin has no incentive to stick around and figure it out.

I've bought three properties and made an offer that fell through on one, and looked around other times. I've tried both traditional agents and a Redfin agent, and will never again work with Redfin.

reverend_gonzo··on Apple asks staff to return to office 3 days a week starting in early September
My work pays for my food.

Also, I’m busy working, so I don’t actually have time to cook my lunch, so it’s either eating something frozen, which is unhealthy and gets old, or get delivery, so that $30 for a meal.

Also, my commute is a fifteen minute walk, because I absolutely optimized for not having to drive anywhere. The only benefit to wfh was seeing my kid more often, but that had its own caveats because it is hugely distracting. So, it’s cheaper and more productive for me to be in the office.

The only reason I’d want to work from home was if I wasn’t actually working, and my bet is many people see it as exactly that.

> Our savings accounts can be thought of as the sum value of the energy output of our life’s work.

Agreed. I stopped reading after that line. according to that logic, Paris Hilton has accomplished more than Mother Teresa.

reverend_gonzo··on Judge: Citibank isn't entitled to $500M it sent to various creditors last August
Not quite. They paid on behalf of of Revlon which is unable to pay.

Effectively, Citibank bought a 500m loan at par when its trading at 43c to the dollar. So Citi just gave the lenders a little over $250m and now is stuck with a non performing loan.

reverend_gonzo··on How to Lose Money
No. Because that wasn’t his goal.
reverend_gonzo··on Coinbase announces proposed direct listing
That’s the standard.

However, Airbnb allocated a number of shares to its own hosts, and a lot of Little People were able to partake in that if they were on the ball.

reverend_gonzo··on The Airbnbs
Life has huge negative consequences for many people.
reverend_gonzo··on Uber sells self-driving unit in deal that will push Aurora’s valuation to $10B
And software propagate learned knowledge perpetually, whereas each human has to learn it over and over again.

On the other hand, software can make mistakes at scale whereas each human makes mistakes differently.

It’s not so cut and dry.

reverend_gonzo··on Coinbase Pro Disables Margin Trading
Stupid people think margin trading is easy money and will lose that in the blink of an eye.

And stupid companies? They’ll do the same thing but take all their employees and affiliated companies with them.

reverend_gonzo··on Pfizer submits Covid vaccine to FDA for approval, to distribute in December
To be fair, every day is history in the making.
reverend_gonzo··on Pimp My Microwave
I can’t speak for everything but:

the vitamin blender, for cleaning, fill it water, some dish soap, and blend for 45 seconds at full power, then rinse out.

For the instant pot. It’s just a regular pot. Take it out and stick it in the dishwasher. I agree with your point in general but those are dead simple to manage.

reverend_gonzo··on Covid vaccine: First ‘milestone’ vaccine offers 90% protection
For what its worth, capitalism does not care about the lives of human beings.
reverend_gonzo··on San Francisco voters approve taxes on highly paid CEOs, big businesses
Jesus. There is a lot of elitism embedded in here.

For one, you’re not paying the Starbucks employee so they can be consumers out of the goodness of your heart. They’re charging what you’ll pay because that is capitalism.

If you don’t want to pay the Starbucks employee, you don’t have to. You can go brew your own coffee, but you probably figure $2 isn’t worth your time so instead you’d rather just pay them for the convenience.

The other great thing about all this is if you don’t like how San Francisco wants to tax you, you can leave. And it’s not even like leaving the country or even leaving the state. You don’t actually even lost anything of substance.

reverend_gonzo··on Get $15k to move to Michigan and work remotely
I live in Chicago and just bought a house in Michigan, so this seemed interesting.

A couple things though: 1) it’s not 15000, it’s 5000 a year, if you get Michigan drivers license, move to Michigan permanently, and work for a non Michigan company. 2) it’s only a few zip codes, which, while those town are really nice, are further from Chicago than most people want to drive regularly. We had our limit to an hour, which gets you to New Buffalo/Union Pier, which is not on the list.

Overall, 5k a year isn’t worth my time.

reverend_gonzo··on Which Cities Have the Highest Risk of a Housing Bubble?
I live in Chicago. The state has its problems and the city has its problems for sure. However, things are crime rates are definitely exaggerated by people who don’t live here. The amenities of the city in my opinion are through the roof, albeit very much limited right now due to COVID.

The one thing Chicago has that many other cities don’t is space. Chicago is surrounded by land so there’s no lack of supply. My opinion is that’s what keeps prices down.

reverend_gonzo··on The Story Behind Markdown
Who exactly is he seeking rent from when he is the one living in the house?

Not contributing anything? It says right there in the article that he is cleaning the graffiti and rehabbing the house.

reverend_gonzo··on Why Credit Card Fraud Is Still a Thing
The purpose of the signature is that you sign it when you get the card, then if it gets stolen, they check that signature with the signature of the person signing it.

Of course, no one checks these days.

reverend_gonzo··on Private Jet with US tourists rejected at Italy’s borders
It is not reasonable at all. I looked at chartering a small plane domestic for 6 people and it was cheaper to fly commercial.

Going across the ocean will cost you a lot more.

I would expect many multiples over the code of business class. So more like 50k pp.

This is a guess, though I feel 10k in private jet from Colorado to Italy would be a steal.

reverend_gonzo··on California accuses Cisco of job discrimination based on Indian employee's caste
Why not let the two people getting married make the decision if they want to merge the two cultures?

I do not ask this rhetorically. I am Indian, though raised in America with very liberal parents. I have a cousin in India who can not get married to her boyfriend because his mother won't accept a marriage to someone who speaks a slightly different language. Both are similar caste, same religion, just from different parts of India.

That is absolutely batshit insane.

reverend_gonzo··on Andrew Yang's Data Dividend Project is pushing Big Tech to pay users for data
Well if what they gave us was more valuable than what they took, they wouldn’t be a very profitable company, would it?
reverend_gonzo··on The Unicorns Fell into a Ditch
For what its worth, even the customer is getting annoyed. I've had multiple cases where a a driver stole my food or mixed up orders. Sure, the company will fix it and refund you, but you're hungry now.

I now only order from places that have in-house delivery drivers, or I go pick it up myself.

reverend_gonzo··on Ask HN: What work can be done quarantined with a toddler?
Giving toddlers video games or movies stunts their brain development, their attention span, and is a terrible idea.

The thing that infants and toddlers want and need more than anything is loving attention from their parents or other adult figures.

reverend_gonzo··on Stocks Halt; Oil and Bonds Drop in Sync
One thing that can absolutely be happening is people just pulling money out of whatever assets they have, due to margin calls, risk reduction, etc.

That would explain why all assets are going down.

reverend_gonzo··on Dow Falls 2997 points worst drop since 1987 crash
Many believe the economy has been propped up by the Fed (by lowering interest rates) because they've been afraid of a recession. The Fed also doesn't really have any more ammo left to prop things up.

So, the cause is that the Fed has been propping an economy that is ripe for a recession and a reset. The coronavirus is the trigger that will force the hand.

reverend_gonzo··on Ask HN: Is UK government insane or genius?
One more, by the way: that the virus doesn’t mutate.
reverend_gonzo··on Ask HN: Have you been infected by Covid-19? What is it like?
This is definitely happening all over the US.

The reason the counts are so low is the CDC refuses to test anyone.

reverend_gonzo··on Robinhood maxed out credit line last month amid market tumult

Interactive Brokers is a professional brokerage that has a free tier now and just added fractional shares as well.

Vanguard, Fidelity, Schwab, TD Ameritrade are all legitimate operations as well, but IB is what professionals use.
