retrac98··on Global Climate Report – September 2021
I’m going to sell up my city house and get a little land in the country so we can be more self sufficient while shit increasingly hits the fan.

We in the first world need to radically reduce our consumption and reassess our relationship with this planet, and we need to do it now.

retrac98··on Americans' Trust in Media Dips to Second Lowest on Record
For me it's that whenever the media report on a subject I have expertise in, I can immediately see how much of what's reported is total bs.
retrac98··on Job vacancies surge past one million in new record
The UK really shat the bed since the 2008 financial crisis, huh.
retrac98··on Italy Braces for Pasta Inflation Amid Soaring Durum Wheat Prices
Seems the real story here is climate change significantly increasing the price of a staple food.

“Pasta is cheap anyway” is such a privileged point of view.

retrac98··on Hospitalizations hit 100k in United States for first time since January
Sorry for your loss, nobody should have to go through that.

How do people in the US who don’t have insurance get treatment for themselves or their family members in situations like this? It seems inconceivable to me that they or their kids are just expected to die?

retrac98··on Tintern 'secret' medieval tunnel system found by accident
Interestingly the site is completely ad free within the UK as it’s funded by the public.
retrac98··on RailsConf 2020 Couch Edition
Good to see. Rails is still a fantastic framework for building web apps in 2020.
retrac98··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
It’s about power dynamics. Generally speaking, one bad employee isn’t going to tank a company, whereas this makes it possible for one bad tweet to tank a person’s employment prospects.
retrac98··on I had to get a background check for my job; the report is a 300 page pdf
Name and shame these companies until this stops.
retrac98··on A used 2015 Retina MacBook Pro might be the best MacBook you can buy today
This article is utterly fucked on my phone. Content disappearing right off the edge of the viewport that you can’t scroll to.
retrac98··on Ask HN: Is web dev viable today?
Yes, it’s extremely viable if you’re good at it.
retrac98··on Apple Card
Banking in the states must be pretty awful, because as someone living in the UK, I don't think there's anything here I don't already get with my existing bank accounts.

I can pay with my phone or a tap of my card pretty much everywhere, most banks have pretty advanced apps and APIs now, I don't think credit cards (or credit card debt) is as much of a "thing" here either.

I'm not saying it's bad, it looks nice and convenient, but it's not really a world changing banking disruption either. It just looks like an Apple branded version of what I've already had for years.

retrac98··on Boeing warns it may stop 737 Max production
Good?
retrac98··on Berkeley first city in California to ban natural gas in new buildings
Can't upvote this enough. People seem to think having an electric or induction hob is somehow superior to gas.

Nah. Gas is by far the best thing to cook on.

retrac98··on Apple is updating Macs again to remove insecure software from Zoom’s partners
While I think this is probably a net good, at what point does my computer stop being my computer?

What if I want to keep something Apple dislikes on my machine?

retrac98··on Apple kills the non-Touch Bar MacBook Pro
99%+ of my usage of the touchbar is pressing escape, adjusting screen brightness, speaker volume, or accessing music controls.

All of these worked flawlessly when I had physical keys, but now it's hard to know what I'm pressing without looking, and sometimes the controls become unresponsive to touches or drags.

I'm a programmer/business owner, so perhaps it's useful for other sorts of creative professionals, but it feels like a total gimmick to me.

I applaud Apple's innovative spirit, but the touchbar wasn't useful at launch, it isn't useful now, and they don't seem to have put any effort into making it better. I hope they kill it with the next Macbook pro release and just go the touchscreen route like everyone else.

retrac98··on Google Chrome has become surveillance software. It’s time to switch
I don’t know why you’re getting downvoted.

It’s slow to adopt new standards and a pain to develop for, but as a bit of consumer software it’s the best browser out there IMO.

retrac98··on Google Chrome has become surveillance software. It’s time to switch
The irony of being prevented from reading this article because the site “sees you’re using an ad blocker”....
retrac98··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
I know there’s not a mass market for it, but I think a lot of privacy conscious folks would pay extra not to have apps on their TV.
retrac98··on Samsung TVs should be regularly virus-checked, the company says
Is there a market out there for a modern dumb TV? A good panel, decent speakers and a load of I/O in a slick enclosure?

I think I’d buy this.

retrac98··on Up to 25 cups of coffee a day still safe for heart health, study says
I quit caffeine altogether a while ago, and it's made a huge difference to my quality of life and work.

When I wake up, I'm actually awake. When I go to bed, I'm actually sleepy. I don't wake up several times during the night anymore, and I'm not falling sleep mid-afternoon ever day.

retrac98··on The United Kingdom Has Gone Mad
I wish these newspaper paywalls would take into account whether you actually read any of the articles you previously clicked into as part of your “free limit”.
retrac98··on London’s Tube Network to Switch on Wi-Fi Tracking by Default in July
O2
retrac98··on London’s Tube Network to Switch on Wi-Fi Tracking by Default in July
Coverage is an issue underground, but plans are cheap now, at least in the UK.

I think my phone plan costs me something like £12 per month and I get more data than I ever use from my phone (30GB), and unlimited minutes/texts.

retrac98··on Dear Programming Job Applicants (2010)
Some people completely blank when they’re under examination like conditions. It doesn’t make them bad programmers.
retrac98··on Up to one million species are on the verge of extinction, U.N. panel says
> Sorry, but most vegans have serious nutrient deficiencies, like proteins, vitamin B12 or K2. Humans are meant to be omnivores, we do not have the digestive tract of herbivores to synthesize proteins or the ability to synthesize vitamin C like carnivores for that matter.

Do some research.

retrac98··on Name It, and They Will Come
This kind of thing is very frustrating for creators.

It’d be cool if comments could be sorted based on their relevance to the article, post, project, or idea as a default, rather than just by time or popularity.

retrac98··on Brexit: MPs reject Theresa May's deal by 149 votes
I’ve nominated myself for work stuff I really didn’t agree with in the past, it was because I thought I could help said stuff not be a total disaster.

Leading a country through brexit is a hell of a sword to fall on though. :/

retrac98··on Brexit: MPs reject Theresa May's deal by 149 votes
Most people would not vote for this kind of politician.
retrac98··on Brexit: MPs reject Theresa May's deal by 149 votes
Yeah, but she did nominate herself for the job after the vote.

Still, better than Cameron.
