resizeitplz··on Dikembe Mutombo has died
All other factors being equal: Taller person = more cells = more cell divisions = more chances for cell mutation = increased risk of (any) cancer. (credit/source: Hank Green and possibly SciShow on YouTube)
resizeitplz··on Show HN: The first open-source Infrastructure-as-Code framework
Wake me up when this can run two stages: TF/OT/Pulumi/etc to provision infrastructure, and then Ansible/Salt/etc to configure them.

Glibness aside, this looks promising, I would love an orchestrator for both infrastructure and configuration management though. From the readme, I'm guessing that's somewhat doable with the `Toolbox` feature; be cool to have native integration for more tools though.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding the scope/intention of the tool though.

Invasive species aren't 'invasive' for invading human space. They're invasive for invading other species space.

resizeitplz··on The Tech Industry Doesn't Understand Consent – Opt-Out Is Not Consent
Guess I'm 'almost nobody'. I see zero issue with AI farming Stack Overflow, Twitter, Reddit, and the like - publicly accessible forums. The value to me was in the discussion. It's happened; I've extracted my value from that engagement. If an AI company can also extract value from that collection of discussions, it costs me nothing and I expect no compensation.

Thought AI companies farming copyrighted work on the other hand, that's a different story.

With apologies for the pedantry, they didn't make it _infinitely_ worse. They may have made it _significantly_ worse.
resizeitplz··on A rural post office was told to prioritize Amazon packages. Chaos ensued
> I'm fine picking things up

If you know it's being delivered through USPS, have it delivered to 'general delivery'[1]. Problem is Amazon and many others don't let you choose your shipper and most post offices (reasonably so) don't accept general delivery from 3rd party carriers.

Alternatively, ship it to a UPS store that offers 'Package Acceptance' service. They charge per-package - usually $5-$7 though I've seen some as high as $15. Or you could open a UPS POBox if you receive enough packages to make it worth the cost.

resizeitplz··on ICE faces heat after agents install apps, VPNs on official phones
It might be possible that on an international TECHNOLOGY forum, a significant percentage of users know what 'VPN' (a tech thing) stands for and don't know what 'ICE' (a government office (off topic) of a single nation (limited scope)) stands for. Context matters. ICE isn't within either the regional or topical domains of common conversation on this forum.

A question as old as time (or as old as the existence of code editors). 4k results on Hacker News alone - and surely thousands, if not millions more, across the internet. There is no right answer, just differing preference.

resizeitplz··on Cloud desktops aren't as good as you'd think
Funny you use a spreadsheet as an example. That's been the default for Excel for years. Save to SharePoint/Teams/OneDrive (whatever MS is calling it these days, it's all the same backend) is the default option - and multi-user live editing (or one user in multiple sessions) just works.

resizeitplz··on I took down my Starlink dish (but haven't cancelled)
Except they aren't evenly distributed. Stargazing skews to nighttime hours while air traffic skews to daytime hours. Not to mention coastal vs inland densities.

That is an interesting comparison though! And it'd be cool to compare with more nuanced assumptions - maybe even factor in how contrails affect things in addition to the 1:1 satellite:plane maths.

resizeitplz··on Rancher Desktop 1.0
Sure you can. WSL abstracts a lot of the networking/integration between the host and VM, just like Docker Desktop does. The experiences are comparable.
resizeitplz··on GitHub stale bot considered harmful
What an odd point of view. It doesn't sound like you respect others' points of view at all.

There's a far cry between disrespect and avoidance/minimization of challenging social interaction.

Envision every driver owning a semi-truck made by the company. It's not a single company blocking the streets; it's the drivers who purchased the company's very large vehicles and who also paid for street access.

Every repo has different contribution rules and a one-off in one repo often just isn't worth the time to learn all the bespoke boxes that need to be checked. The work is there in the comments and if it's of value, someone more familiar can take it the last mile ... and codespaces _just_ came out generally. Could you edit online before that?

Just like "scientist" and "engineer" have fractured into many specialist disciplines, the same is happening (and has happened many times before; when's the last time you wrote assembly?) in the disciplines of "computer science" and "computer engineering".

There will still need to be experts to continue the building and maintenance of services; however, not everyone designing web sites or doing data analytics needs to know in intricate detail the underpinnings of their tools.

resizeitplz··on Docker Desktop no longer free for large companies
Fwiw, while there probably isn't a _good_ public relations response here ... N=1, when I see a company publicly managing escalation via public shaming, it inclines me to steer purchasing decisions away from them in the future.

Luckily most carriers support call/SMS over WiFi. And if that isn't available, a signal booster could bridge the RF barrier.
resizeitplz··on Peloton recalling all treadmills after reports of injuries, one death
Fwiw, I agree (mostly) with you (and don't understand the tone of this comment section... at ... all.. ).

- Would either either a recall or an offer of free child-safety package be a nice brand-repairing option? yes. - Should we regulate the industry for one company's lack thereof? no.

I must be getting old. All I could think when reading this thread was, "This is why we can't have nice things". What if you want to buy an aesthetically (maybe even functionally) pleasing, but unsafe-if-misused device? Why must we optimize for child safety, when a modicum of awareness/prevention and/or training would suffice?

A better comparison than razor blades: motorcycles. In most states, if a child isn't required to be in a safety seat, they aren't prohibited from being a motorcycle passenger - despite it being statistically less safe than any car.

I hate it when text doesn't flow to the size I've set my window. Makes it a waste of space when the window is expanded past whatever the designer felt was a good one-size-fits-all fixed limit. At least let me choose how wide my wall of text should be.
