rerx··on Java Development on an Apple M1 – A One Year Review
Gave this a try a few weeks ago (for CLion with Jetbrains Client, IntelliJ for Java might be further of course) and felt it was still quite lacking. Loads of features weren't there yet. Of the top of my head: no way to use my customized keymap, no git blame annotations, fundamental navigation shortcuts missing (jump back, navigate via file structure), no way to attach the debugger to a process, ...

I went back to remote controlling the full-featured IDE via Projector, their earlier approach too remote development. That works extremely well for what it is. Probably the richer Gateway client will catch up in a while, but not quite yet.

rerx··on Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage
> why you'd want to actually carry it around

To get on trains and buses, or to walk up a flight of stairs, ... Why would you get a folding bike if you have no need to ever carry it?

rerx··on Folding bicycle small enough to fit in hand luggage
Here they show how to attach your trolley bag to the bike and pull it behind you. I reckon this requires quality wheels on your luggage. https://kwiggle.odoo.com/home-kwiggle-rollkoffer

Besides that you can attach a standard bike pack (e.g. from Ortlieb) to the frame of the Kwiggle or carry a backpack, of course.

I haven't had a chance to try a single-wheel electric vehicle as they are not street legal in Germany. But usually I vastly prefer riding a bike over an electric stand-up scooter. My weight is distributed much better on a bike, making the right more stable. On a scooter I cannot reliably raise one arm to give a turn signal. Not signaling can be quite dangerous on shared roads or narrow paths. I never see anybody else indicate their turns on these scooters, so it's probably not a personal problem. Did any manufacturer figure out a way to put easy to read indicator lights on these?

The other thing is that you actually get some light exercise on a bike. Most people with desk jobs would do well to move their bodies a bit more during their days.

One thing that's nice some times about scooters is being able to stand up tall, rather than get into a slightly hunched up position on a bike. The Kwiggle from the GP allows for quite a unique upright body position. So that may be intriguing.

rerx··on Apple Made $6.5B USD by No Longer Providing Accessories with New iPhones
And the reason for that was not Apple's will, it was EU legislation.
rerx··on Unison News – Changes in 2.52.0
This is big: They introduced a proper protocol for serialization. Finally one will no longer need to make sure on each host to run exactly the same version of Unison _compiled with precisely the same version of the Ocaml compiler_!
rerx··on Faster Python calculations with Numba
Pythran sounds awesome. I've somehow always glossed over it before. That might be due to the name, which made me think it was some Fortran-interop library (and those tend to be old and not what I need)...
rerx··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
Big name US tech companies pay much higher salaries than typical for software engineers in Munich. Just browse https://www.levels.fyi/comp.html?track=Software%20Engineer&c...
rerx··on Germany to admit 400k skilled immigrants annually
Munich is very expensive for German standards. 60k gross is not a lot of money there.

Zurich or SF are still on a different level of course.

rerx··on Poll: Is the leetcode grind necessary to land a high paying remote job?
Financially poor
rerx··on The weight of the clipboard
Same experience with Raycast and Enpass.

Additionally you can configure apps to be ignored for the clipboard history feature.

rerx··on Stupid Patterns
A malicious recipient can click the link and exploit that their email is now associated to the account of some other person.
rerx··on Libtree: Turns ldd into a tree; explains why shared libraries are found or not
You are right! I misremembered. It's `ps x`.

From `man ps`:

x Lift the BSD-style "must have a tty" restriction, which is imposed upon the set of all processes when some BSD-style (without "-") options are used or when the
ps personality setting is BSD-like. The set of processes selected in this manner is in addition to the set of processes selected by other means. An alternate
description is that this option causes ps to list all processes owned by you (same EUID as ps), or to list all processes when used together with the a option.
rerx··on Q&A with the developer of BetterDummy: from macOS secrets to his motivations
Have they fixed the performance issues with non-integer scaling?
rerx··on Libtree: Turns ldd into a tree; explains why shared libraries are found or not
I agree that the interface of ps is awful with its two conflicting ways to define options, but `ps u` does show all your processes on Linux. I usually type `ps fux` to get a nice tree. Sadly that's Linux-specific and doesn't work on the Mac.
rerx··on Rendering on the Apple M1 Max Chip
Which review are you quoting?
rerx··on Are dynamic languages going to replace static languages? (2003)
The auto keyword in C++ is great because it helps you avoid unintended type conversions in assignments. For that reason it should be used widely IMHO. The downside is that it makes it slightly harder to read code outside of an IDE.
rerx··on Deurbanising the Web [pdf]
When I click on the submitted link with Chrome on Android, it asks me if I want to redownload "0.pdf". Such a confusing question. If I pick the wrong answer, I end up with some restaurant menu I must have looked at months ago, not what the global poster intended.

So for non-confusing real-world UX I'd recommend extra care with file names if you want to go PDF only.

rerx··on A work-in-progress Magit clone for Neovim
Thanks for the tip, I haven't tried tig yet. That might actually be useful on remote systems in situations where I don't have access to my personally configured emacs.
rerx··on A work-in-progress Magit clone for Neovim
In Magit you can easily select arbitrary regions of code to stage (or chunks as you would via the command line). I haven't seen any git interface that is as intuitive for this task.
rerx··on The ongoing witch-hunt for sex workers in Sweden
Yes, I don't think the "Nordic model" is a good final answer. But I am not sure if there are more problems with human trafficking in Sweden than in Germany (of course geography plays a role, too).
rerx··on The ongoing witch-hunt for sex workers in Sweden
> victimless crimes

I am not sure if it is really that clear cut. Germany has pretty liberal laws around prostitution and there are massive problems with human trafficking. Many women do not do the work out of their own volition.

rerx··on Scite: Smart Citations for Better Research
That name has just been burnt into my mind to stand for the Scintilla Text Editor: https://www.scintilla.org/SciTE.html Amazing how this is still getting releases after 20+ years.
rerx··on Useful and useless code comments
If you are not careful, you end up with 1000s of tests that are tightly coupled to your implementation, testing internal details of your systems, not their behavior. They become a massive burden if you decide to refactor a system and change its internal implementation.

Do test-driven development, but consider deleting these internal tests once you have scoped out how your initial implementation should work.

rerx··on Useful and useless code comments
Then these two lines of code move away from the context of the surrounding function. There may also be something specific about how the scrollbar is added in this instance, requiring a very complicated name if you want to convey that.

As long as the surrounding function is not overly complex, I don't see the advantage of having to jump back and forth from mini function to mini function to understand what the code is doing.

rerx··on Survey shows people no longer believe working hard will lead to a better life
Rural, poorer areas of the country?
rerx··on Software is eating the car
How about a Renault Twizy?
rerx··on JupyterLite – WASM-powered Jupyter running in the browser
Yeah, that's exactly the same reasoning. Because it's more convenient you run your notebooks in a dedicated tool. Nteract or Vscode or Pycharm..
rerx··on JupyterLite – WASM-powered Jupyter running in the browser
It's convenient to directly open a notebook from a browser download or a slack message without having to fire up jupyter in a terminal and navigate it to that temp file.
rerx··on Is there any modern compiled language with native compilers for 32-bit MS-DOS?
But C++20 is very different from the dialect supported by an old Watcom compiler. :)
