rendaw··on One Piece of Flock Camera Data Put This Innocent Woman in Jail for 13 Days
If you give a toddler a gun and it shoots someone, it's the toddler's fault, not the gun's right? But you don't give toddlers guns. You don't say "well toddlers just need to be more careful".
rendaw··on Sourcehut account takeover via build logs (XSS in ansi2html)
What's disappointing? I feel like I missed something.
rendaw··on Once Claude can measure something, it can make it faster
If only we had some sort of artificial intelligence-like system that could decide not only based on the word but also surrounding context, and maybe even in cases when that word is not specifically used.
rendaw··on 28% of job postings on company career sites have been open over 90 days
If I were reviewing 100 resumes, I wouldn't use the language list. I'd use something with actual context, like work experience.

But more than that, why do you think someone who is terrible at java wouldn't put it first in the list when applying for a java oriented job? Assuming they were aware of this unwritten rule.

rendaw··on Surprise, Meta's latest AI gimmick is just underpaid humans
That article seems to be a 2nd hand take on this: https://www.404media.co/meta-tests-muse-ai-agent-calls-that-...

Anyways, aside from being make believe, there's another good point that this is disclosing private information to humans, probably not well paid ones at that?

rendaw··on College Is Coming Apart After Successive, Overlapping Crises
I was wondering what crises this was referring to. It's paywalled, but if the first couple paragraphs are sufficient it sounds like: students using AI and not learning, researchers using AI and feeling like they no longer have value themselves.
rendaw··on The Return of Sail Power: Cargo Ships Are Turning Back to the Wind
Couldn't they use sails plus that? Are these companies advocating for just sails, or sails plus other stuff?
rendaw··on Java 27
The elephant in the room is the standard library (collections). It isn't even type safe yet, because some methods were around before generics were added. And collections are too core for anyone to be able to agree on a 3rd party standard.
rendaw··on How to write an effective software design document
So you need to believe in design documents, and if you don't like them you're probably trying to manipulate people? But have you justified design documents?

I can think of situations where design document(s) would be a clear use, and I think that would be a better way to respond.

rendaw··on Microsoft patches Windows and Excel – breaks audio, remote access, and paste
But surely random crashes is better than a broken login screen that prevents you from doing any work at all?
rendaw··on Show HN: HomeCat – Design your backyard office
I think it's an optical illusion. It looks weird to me, but comparing it with various objects I have I do feel like they're parallel.

Specifically the roof edge vs base edge, the back of the roof vs the front of the roof.

rendaw··on Bill Gates tries to install MovieMaker (2003)
The most amazing thing about this isn't that ownership and lines of responsibility and politics are messed up, it's that the guy holding the reins is 100% aware of this and has no power to get the horse to move in the right direction. Is there not an org chart? How is there not a person above who knows what who below them owns? If these are the execs below Bill, how does Bill not know which one owns it? If he knows and they're not taking responsibility, why doesn't he fire them? Reading this I'm honestly more surprised that Microsoft lasted past 2004.
rendaw··on Global warming will exceed 1.5-degree limit, UN says
I don't think GP was claiming they weren't.
rendaw··on Fastpotify
I clicked on that expecting to see something about the limitations of retained mode, but I didn't see anything. There's a claim about long term retained mode complexity, and a discussion about a winit bug...
rendaw··on How would you know whether an ancient culture had zero?
Doesn't the placeholder imply nothingness? E.g. 10 means 1 ten and 0 ones.
rendaw··on It’s so hard to finish an idea that is not yours and is just suggested by AI
That doesn't solve the problem of it hallucinating more design details and putting them in comments. The solution to too much authoritative documentation isn't more authoritative documentation.
rendaw··on Headlong: A Microharness for Persistent Agents
If secrecy doesn't matter, why did they tell the agent not to divulge stuff in the first place?
rendaw··on RAPx: A static analysis tool for Rust programs
I posted this a couple days ago and I guess it got re-raised. I thought it was cool -

1. I didn't know there was any static analysis systems out there with type info, it's famously missing from codegen etc.

2. Most of the discussions are about formal analysis, kani etc. But I really haven't seen much of more traditional (?) analysis in rust

3. It can identify unnecessary `clone` (with some restrictions, probably) which was always something that bothered me... whether to clone or not is almost purely mechanical but you end up having to choose by hand.

rendaw··on Hello, me. It's been a while
Isn't this like self-stimming or self-regulatory behavior?
rendaw··on Cool URIs Don't Change (1998)
URLs are URIs and URLs include "how to access this" which fundamentally makes it hard to prevent them from changing. If it were an abstract ID, like a UUID, or a hash or something I'd get it. So are all URLs bad URIs?
rendaw··on Everything you do is being recorded
Why is it obvious why they tampered with old archives? Why did they tamper with old archives?
rendaw··on Illinois just told every operating system to start reporting your kid's age
> The law also stipulates that all transmitted digital signals have to be encrypted.

I'm hoping there's nuance, but I'm surprised the article didn't go deeper on this too. ARP? ICMP? DHCP?

I can't actually load the bill to read it ATM.

rendaw··on Lost my phone at the office. Claude suggested tracking Bluetooth signal strength
Suppose she decides from the experience that she likes making games, and wants to expand on it. She wants to support more songs, different types of song sources, colorful animated backgrounds, flashy graphics, change how it scores, a hundred other things. But by the time she gets halfway through it claude just starts getting things wrong and making them worse, and it turns into a nightmare where she doesn't even know how to go back and going back doesn't fix the problem. Or going back undoes some things she did want along with all the stuff it broke, and now she has to do it all over again. She makes a change on one screen and it changes the behavior on a dozen others. Claude starts telling her that things are impossible, or that it did this because there was a comment that said she wanted it, or coming up with other weird complicated reasons, citing random lines of code, why this or that can't work. And then she decides that yeah, making things is an awful experience and she never wants to do it again.
rendaw··on Less Protein, Not More, May Lead to Healthier Aging
That's surprising, and the first I'd heard of it! Especially because a ton of people in Japan today seem to consider meat the most enjoyable food group.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_meat_consumption_in...

Although it sounds like 1. it was only certain classes, 2. it was only part of the year, 3. it still allowed some meat (boar, deer).

As for it being the reason for their longevity... I doubt it's related? Since the ban ended 150 years ago and AFAIK the Japanese longevity is mostly statistics starting around the war I think.

rendaw··on Stacked PRs are now live on GitHub
Doesn't this have the same issue? If you need database changes that also need query changes or api changes, then you need to modify multiple commits.
rendaw··on The Artist Who Colored Ghibli
> Moreover, Anne’s character—unidealized in appearance, impulsive in personality, and lacking a male point of view—contrasted sharply with the idealized, “protective” image of girls that Miyazaki was beginning to shape in his works.

Is this real? I thought that Miyazaki was a feminist and specifically took issue with modern anime depictions of women, or something like that. And specifically, that his works mostly portrayed "strong" women. Or am I misunderstanding this quote?

rendaw··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
I'm ashamed that I use a programming language where the IDE can't rename things, so I rely on AI to do it...
rendaw··on The new rules of context engineering for Claude 5 generation models
I think it's action bias https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Action_bias
rendaw··on JetZero
What do economy seats look like? I can't imagine they all have wrap-around video...
rendaw··on Humans haven't stopped evolving
The article is talking about the last 5000 years, GP is talking about the last 50-100 years. I think most people who say that natural selection is over are talking about ~100 years and not 5000 years.
