Exactly. My preferred pronoun is "gigantic cock" and if my coworkers didn't refer to me as this, I would be highly offended.
remotecool··on A Failed SaaS Postmortem
You don't need half of these services/tools. Especially when. You are building an MVP.

Your first version should be very simple with very few layers.

remotecool··on A podcast that hacks Ring camera owners live
It sounds like we agree.
remotecool··on A podcast that hacks Ring camera owners live
I have no problem with this. I have ring cameras all around my property and so do most of my neighbors and it's already caught multiple people attempting breaking and stealing packages.

They get hacked because of poor password choices.

You are fighting against a changing tide and the benefits of the cameras vastly outweigh the privacy concerns.

remotecool··on America's Missile That Uses Sword Blades Instead of Explosives Has Struck Again
This is a good thing. Less casualties than what happens with explosive warheads.
remotecool··on Ask HN: Is it still profitable to start an app development company?
Yes. This will most likely always be profitable.

The tough part is finding clients.

remotecool··on The Lesson to Unlearn
I think this is the difference between education in many countries In Asia and the US: they care only about the grades, not what you actually learn.
remotecool··on Engineering Leaders Are Failing Themselves
Skin color and gender do not make a better engineer. We should have diversity of thoughts and ideas and educational backgrounds.

Ie: the content of our character and not the color of our skin.

remotecool··on My Experience as a Remote Worker
I've been remote for 10 years and I agree. I was traveling around Asia for the first year or so and now am married and have a son.

I need socialization at least once/week or I start getting depressed.

remotecool··on What is energy, actually? (2011)
Unless births are also somehow limited, limiting GDP growth will eventually cause large amounts of poverty.

Nobody wants to admit that the only real way to limit energy consumption is a horrible dystopian future.

remotecool··on Mastercard Bans Automatic Billing After Free Trials
I've not seen it obscured. Its difficult to read a person's mind to know I'd they forgot to cancel or actively remembered they had a subscription.
remotecool··on Mastercard Bans Automatic Billing After Free Trials
Well, the solution for most companies will be no more free trials.
remotecool··on If People Were Paid by Ability, Inequality Would Plummet
Do you have any proof of this?

Why would a company pay a CEO millions if they have no talent? If that were the case, they would just find a random person and pay them minimum wage.

This sounds like the reasoning of a worker that thinks managers don't actually do anything all day, when the reality is much different.

Paying by ability is foolish. I know many people that have the ability to get a good job, but choose to smoke copious amounts of weed and instead sit on the couch all day. It would be like valuing companies based on the idea only.

remotecool··on CHS: A mysterious cannabis-related illness
The weed zealots have been denying this for awhile now.
remotecool··on Amazon’s quest for more, cheaper products has resulted in a flea market of fakes
I have had a book business for the last 8 years and in the last 3, there has been a massive increase in counterfeit books.

The biggest issue is that there isn't any way to really know if it's a counterfeit unless you send them to the publisher. Many are so good, you can't really tell the difference unless you really know what to look for.

I tried this once and in response they sent me a cease and desist letter claiming I was knowingly selling counterfeits.

They went away after I got my attorney involved, but it isn't really helping the publishers because I still don't really know how to spot counterfeits, besides the obvious signs.

The publishers really want to get rid of the secondary markets because they don't make any money on it...so they are using attorneys to squash it instead.

remotecool··on How to Fake Being a Good Programmer
Yeah, well, the code will prove otherwise.
remotecool··on Why states are rushing to seal tens of millions of old criminal records
How about we disallow political discrimination as well. The left is so against discrimination when it comes to crime, yet will find every reason to not support or hire people that are against their political beliefs.

Conservatives/republicans/trump supporters face overwhelming discrimination in silicon valley.

It's why I know all of these movements are complete bullshit and just a way to get voting power and push out anyone you dislike.

remotecool··on The US could end up running on gasoline forever
If politicians have have their way, business will be driven out of the US because of over taxation and we will never get to this point.
remotecool··on Pocket Popcorn Computer: Linux in Your Pocket
I bought a couple of these and installed nes and SNES emulators with a full library of roms for my nephews. They loved it.
remotecool··on Makers, Don't Let Yourself Be Forced into the 'Manager Schedule'
I think the problem is that every quirky developer thinks they're the Dennis Rodman of their team and it's probably not the case.
remotecool··on [dead]
Gates doesn't want to give up his money because he can actually help more people with it than any government plan.

The government will squander the money like they always do, with absolutely no accountability.

Wealth taxes do nothing but push the wealthy out and leave the middle class to foot the bill.

remotecool··on As Disasters Worsen, Cities and Researchers Eye Social Resilience
Ah ok. It's been really cold this month where I live. I guess global warming isn't happening after all.
remotecool··on A teenager won a $25,000 award for a solution to eliminate blind spots for cars
I think it's great she came up with a solution..but mounting a web cam to the top of your car isn't really practical.
remotecool··on As Disasters Worsen, Cities and Researchers Eye Social Resilience
Why are we attributing weather to climate? I hear this many times during a discussion when someone mentions cold weather and global warming, yet so many of these articles do exactly this.

You can't have it both ways.

remotecool··on Netflix, HBO and Cable Giants Are Coming for Password Sharers
You have this backwards.

Streaming services are only popular and accepted by big companies now because piracy reduced CD/album sales so much, they had no choice.

A sliver of the Indy artists got popular and signed with a big label after getting pirated so much (which was my point about requiring a label).

The rest make nothing on streaming sales (fractions of pennies) and forget about trying to sell an album. I suppose begging for donations on patreon might work, but it's not a very good way to make a living.

The culture acceptance of music piracy pushed all music in the hands of big corporations. To not admit this is not accepting the truth about your actions. It seems you want to justify your own piracy and ignore all of the negative effects it had on companies...which most likely led to the loss of many jobs.

I connect SAAS to software piracy because I've been in countless meetings over the past 5 years with business owners of software companies saying exactly what I told you.

If software can be turned into a service, it will be..because companies don't want to deal with lost sales, people that somehow think they can get free support with a pirated copy, and the spreading of misinformation when a pirated copy filled with viruses and malware is attributed to them.

Not to mention organic google keywords that lead to the pirated copies rather than the original..causing confusion, more lost sales, and harm to the company reputation.

As for the Immigration issue, blame the Democrats. When you have politicians pushing for open borders, it's difficult not to pay attention.

remotecool··on Netflix, HBO and Cable Giants Are Coming for Password Sharers
Yes, a viral effect. If the effect is to download it for free, people will be unwilling to pay for it in the future and the value has started creeping toward $0.

If you are going to infringe on someone's copyright, at least be honest about its effects.

remotecool··on Netflix, HBO and Cable Giants Are Coming for Password Sharers
It's worse than theft. When you steal a car, only that car is lost. When you infringe copyright on a massive scale, it dilutes the value of the original work and reduces the value of all future copies.

This can be seen with music today. Rampant sharing made it so you can't really sell albums anymore. If you want to make a living, you almost have to go with a big label.

It's also why most software companies have now have SAAS and we now are renting software by the month instead of being able to buy a copy.

All of those people I remember a decade ago who claimed they were sharing music to help the indy artist are nowhere to be found and their actions have only hurt any chances of an Indy artist to make a living.

remotecool··on Budapest declares climate emergency, teases carbon-neutrality
Well, if only 20% of carbon emissions are cleared, the world is still doomed.

My point is that nobody wants do do anything about the other 80%. No punishment and excuses are given that they are 'developing nations', so they can freely pollute the earth and destroy the environment.

We really should be concentrating o n that 80%, and we aren't, which makes me question the motives of things like the Paris agreement.

While we bend over backwards to save the environment, these nations just use it as a way to boost their own economies while continuing to pollute and break every agreement and lie about it.

remotecool··on Suspended Amazon sellers are being stifled by an email glitch as holidays loom
Good luck getting reinstated when it is working.

I lost a good business a few years back because Amazon refused to respond to me (aside from automated bots) and sided with a scam artist (that I think now was a competitor) that complained and kept my item. Even after I bent over backwards to help them.

Amazon kept almost $50,000 of my money for 3 months and it nearly bankrupted me.

I learned my lesson: never build a business on a third-party platform.

remotecool··on Budapest declares climate emergency, teases carbon-neutrality
Right. So 80% of a global genocide can be ignored? Two can play this game.
