remirk··on China is betting that the West is in irreversible decline
> Destroying inner cities is not helping.

I wholefully agree with you. That is harmful. Though, it is only a small subset of the people who are guilty of that. So we should speak to those people instead of the whole group that is critical of the current police force.

> Portland just decided that to combat all of the shootings and crime happening in the city's parks they will add more unarmed park rangers.

Well, you have got to start somewhere. That are structural problems in the police force which aren't going away anytime soon. We should do something about that. We've learned that arming police more certainly isn't helping.

I'll be surprised if, in 10 years, we wouldn't conclude that Portland's efforts were helpful to come to a solution to the problem. Solving problems, also what OP is talking about, is a long term effort.

remirk··on China is betting that the West is in irreversible decline
You are saying you would like people to actually improve the country, but are saying defunding the police counters that.

When people say they'll want to defund the police, they are not saying there should be no police. People want a different police. There are structural problems that are not easily fixed, as we have seen. Making a new police-like organisation from the ground up is a way to fix those structural problems. I'm not sure if I agree that is the best solution, but people that do are trying to improve the country that way.

In fact, all people that are protesting do want to improve the world. But they realise that they are held back. See climate change and inequality. Those problems cannot be fixed without getting the people in power to help.

remirk··on Signal adds a payments feature with a privacy-focused cryptocurrency
I love FluffyChat. Been using it for a month now and it's significantly faster than Element/SchildiChat on Android. It has the basic chat features I would expect from a Matrix application. Only feature I don't think it has crosssigning at the moment. (In which you're signing your friends master-key, which they use to sign their new devices, so you don't have to have a cryptoparty anytime a friend adds a new device)

That was the case a few years ago. Matrix' server software has improved a lot since then. It doesn't use much resources anymore. Though there still is a large CPU spike when I join a really large room (500+ users) for the first time.
remirk··on John Sullivan resign as executive director of the Free Software Foundation
Stallman is only one person on the board. It's quite a proven strategy to have people with vastly different skillsets on the board of an organisation.

In FSF's case, Stallman might be a good fit to contribute his software freedom ideas. As long as there are other people who can focus on PR.

remirk··on Namecheap just snaked another domain off me
You are raising good points indeed.
remirk··on Namecheap just snaked another domain off me
> They are in the business of selling domains.

Domains that are taken but in demand typically sell for higher than what the default price is.

> It's much more likely that 10,000 other people had the same idea to get something as popular as 'dnd.quest'

According to the post the registration happened 30 seconds to 1 minute after the poster searched for the domain on the registrar. That is quite a coincidence.

remirk··on Signal's Server repo hasn't been updated since April 2020
This is a fastly growing messaging startup we're talking about. You may be right, but to me it sounds highly unlikely they haven't had to make even the slighest patch to their server code in 10 months.

This works with the assumption that parents have enough disposible income to fully maintain their children well into their 20's. Which isn't always the case.

remirk··on Signal is having technical difficulties
The web.
remirk··on Signal is having technical difficulties
> Recommended specs will include 16GB RAM only for synapse, SSD storage, etc.

What? If you want a server for 200+ users, yes maybe. But 2GB of RAM is plenty for hosting a few active users federating in large chats.

remirk··on Signal is having technical difficulties
That's an odd claim. What's your source?

As a longish time Matrix user I've never experienced scalability issues due to federation. The federation actually works pretty well. Scalability from Matrix comes/came due to the fact that some servers were too popular. Though that is actively being worked on: https://matrix.org/blog/2020/11/03/how-we-fixed-synapses-sca...

remirk··on Element – All-in-one secure chat app for teams, friends and organisations
Yeah, though the performance issues are getting (much) better now that the server software Synapse has more options for scaling.

Here's a blog post with the changes they made: https://matrix.org/blog/2020/11/03/how-we-fixed-synapses-sca...

remirk··on Element – All-in-one secure chat app for teams, friends and organisations
Big fan of SchildiChat on Android! It's Element but with patches to give it extra optional features like chat bubbles and an (experimental) mode which hides 'complex' features nontechnical users might find confusing.
remirk··on Element – All-in-one secure chat app for teams, friends and organisations
That is only the case when you have verified your friends keys (by qr code or emoji string).

When one of your friends account is hijacked and has someone snooping on messages, you'd want to know that.

Though I see it might be confusing at first for users to understand that they have to sign their devices. Currently, you have to login with a username/password and afterwards (optionaly) get one of your other devices to sign your new device. Which the UI does clearly ask you to do though.

remirk··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
Your first link lists a lot of tickets than actual performance issues.

Searching on an issue tracker for the word 'performance' is not a good source for claiming there are performance issues.

Synapse used to have scaling issues. Those are pretty much fixed.[1]

remirk··on Poll: Switching from WhatsApp
That depends on what you want with privacy. If you'd want to chat anonymously, having to use your real phone number is a bummer. At least in my country, it's getting harder and harder to get a SIM-card that is not tied to your name.

The alternative is getting a burner SIM-card. Though, that will become harder once more prepaid providers require your ID.

remirk··on Show HN: System for Private Data Management
Could you share the structure you've come up with for managing this information? In particular the directory structure, file structure and what data you store in CSV vs regular text files. That would be really great!

I've tried managing a personal CRM in text files, but I struggle on getting a future proof structure. I'll have basic questions like: Should I have one file per relationship/person, or a directory containing files per encounter? An example from someone who has used it for some time would be great to have.

remirk··on Cerulean: Experimental micro-blogging app for Matrix
People have tried doing document collaboration in a project called matrix-notepad. Though, I'm not sure how active it still is.

remirk··on Git is too hard
Git is one of those technologies where it's super important to get a good grasp of how to internals work. Once you got that, it get easier to answer git questions for others or yourself, and to read the documentation or man pages, as you know what is happening.

With how software devs use git, it's 100% worth it to read a good book on it.

remirk··on Ask HN: Why Isn't Open Source Voting Software Mandated?
Because open source software doesn't make electronic voting 100% foolproof either. It's hard to prove the software running on the systems is the same as the source code you've read.

And you still have other issues like radio waves being emitted based on the computers' calculations, which (in theory) makes it possible to determine what you've voted. Researchers in The Netherlands proved that it was possible with the machines there, which is why we went back to pencil and paper.

remirk··on Using Matrix to replace proprietary and centralized chat apps
Well you must have has a real bad experience. That's unfortunate indeed and I understand your frustration.

It is not representative though. You do need a server and a domain name, but that isn't out of place when hosting internet based services like a chat server.

remirk··on Using Matrix to replace proprietary and centralized chat apps
> And yet setting a full Matrix stack requires days of work and endless maintenance.

This is not true. People, don't let this FUD scare you.

My home server has been running for more than a year, was easy to setup (reading documentation took the most time) and takes little maintenance. Just apt update && apt upgrade.

Edit: and even if reading the documentation takes you 'days of work', you can follow a video of the server being setup in 30 minutes, including a jitsi instance for video conferencing: https://matrix.org/blog/2020/04/06/running-your-own-secure-c...
