remirk··on Show HN: An easy way of broadcasting radio around you (looking for feedback)
Luckily the FAQ already mentions why this is a bad idea.

> Please note that due of the hardware of the raspberry pi, harmonics ARE generated on 3x, 5x, 7x and 9x the desired frequency. Those harmonics are polluting important services like emergency services a d others.

Please do not use the GPIO of a Raspberry Pi to generate a high frequency to emit radio waves. Putting square waves on the air is always asking for trouble. A simple filter is not a proper solution if the source is so dirty.

For a project as well built of this seems, it seems odd that they would advice people to use such a hacky way. Syncing networked clients to play audio at exactly the same time is a solved problem.

remirk··on Microsoft has a problem: lack of demand for its AI products
I doubt it's useful to draw conclusions in today's world. The chart is almost two years old.
remirk··on Jitsi Meet abandons anonimity promise
I personally have no issue with having to log-in to use the hosted Jitsi and have it store that I created a room. That's a small price to pay for the longevity of the service.

If logging in is an issue, you're still able to selfhost Jitsi just fine.

Edit: this article feels like blogspam to me. https://jitsi.org/blog/authentication-on-meet-jit-si/ is the source the article refers to.

remirk··on Google has already pulled six products in 2023
The dedicated Streetview app was finally killed because streetview is already integrated in regular google maps. To me, that seems like a good reason to discontinue the dedicated app.

I don't get the reasoning behind this article. Half of this list is side projects which didn't work out, which is understandable to a certain degree. The article feels like blogspam riding on the hypetrain of people disliking when google discontinues products like Stadia.

remirk··on On ‘Plant-Based’
You're saying that vegan people have to use milk alternatives like almond milk. Which is certainly not the case. What a non-argument.

Also, the problem with milk is not necessarily CO2 but CH4.

remirk··on Adopting Matrix at the Gnome Foundation
I find it hard to believe that not showing video previews from links is a breaking issue for a lot of users. But I get your point that Matrix is kind of complex in some ways. Federation surely doesn't help to combat complexity.
remirk··on Microsoft to Block Windows 11 Browser Workarounds
It is quite normal that things break on the Windows Insider Preview builds from time to time right?

I'm pro Free Software, and therefore anti-Microsoft, but isn't it possible that, because of the changes to URL requests, they just haven't implemented support for having a difference standard browser? And that it may come in the upcoming weeks?

This would be an all-time low for Microsoft. It would give them a lot of hate. I find that hard to believe to be honest.

remirk··on Capitalism is killing the planet – it’s time to stop buying into our destruction
> I've heard that around 130k people are delivered from poverty each day lately. That's due to markets and such, not the good intentions of people like Pol Pot.

Can you provide a citation for such a wild claim?

remirk··on Offline First
You should read the rest of the article and realise the author actually agrees with you. The comment you are replying to is taking the quote out of context.
remirk··on Stop Using Encrypted Email (2020)
I was replying to

> The current stewards of the protocol don’t seem to be giving it that, growing features (even if good and competently designed ones) while treating the surroundings with something of a “they will come” approach.

I don't agree the growing features is an issue.

remirk··on Stop Using Encrypted Email (2020)
I agree that Matrix is quite complicated. However, adding new features doesn't have to make it that more complicated. I get the impression that it's not that bad as most new features are actually based on existing parts of the protocol. Everything is just based on events in a room. Most 'special' events have a fallback mechanism to text, to insure clients that haven't implemented the event type can still show the information to the user. Replies and stickers make use of this for instance.

Signal says it's harder to innovate in a federated system. [1]

remirk··on Libreddit: Private front-end for Reddit written in Rust
I think the argument made is regarding tracking. If I understand this architecture correctly, the use of a proxy would mean reddit can't correlate your browsing habits, as they'll be correlating all browsing habits of people using the proxy.
remirk··on More Is More: The End of Minimalism
> I wish I was as good a parent as I am an engineer.

From the information in your comment you seem like a great parent to me. Or maybe you are just a good parent, but an exceptionally great engineer ;)

You seem to be perfectly aware of things you need to take into consideration. And you have even come to a solution. Sometimes things are just hard, but that doesn't say anything about your parenting abilities.

remirk··on What do you do with a billion grams of surplus weed?
I'm not sure on the 50%. I didn't even know there was a separate tax. It seems unlikely to me as weed is still 'illegal'. The police won't look your way if you use it or sell it in shops. But everything that happens before the shop (growing and transport) is still very much illegal and you will get a big fine if you get caught. You are only allowed to have 5 grams or a small amount of plants.

The government together with a few selected municipalities is starting an experiment to grow it in selected growing facilities. As far as I know no municipality has started selling those yet.

remirk··on Firefox Lost Almost 50M Users: Here’s Why It Is Concerning
I see that as a minor UI change. The context menu is still there. Renaming and reordering stuff happens all the time in software.
remirk··on Firefox Lost Almost 50M Users: Here’s Why It Is Concerning
> 1. Firefox needs to stop with the UI changes.

For regular users, having software look great can be quite important. Especially when there is strong competition.

Firefox doesn't even make that many changes that breaks the workflow of regular users. From memory, the last time seems when the hamburger dropdown 'Applications Menu' was introduced. Normally UI-changes in Firefox are more non-breaking.

remirk··on Element raises $30M to boost Matrix
"Why would anyone use X after reading a critic blog post about it?"
remirk··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
I don't see this happening. As long as the app that's buggy doesn't have more than 33% market share I doubt the media would write it down as the system as a whole having the bug. Thought I am disappointed by lazy tech articles by otherwise good media regularly.
remirk··on Signal on Android: Images sent to wrong contacts
What a buzz kill. If I understand you correctly we shouldn't have expectations or constructive criticism on stuff we don't directly pay money for. I think that's nonsense. Does this only apply to certain opinions?

You are not paying money for Signal. But by using it, and getting others to use it, you are definitely improving their position on the market by helping them become a monopoly. Money isn't everything.

remirk··on Show HN: Website changes design each time you blink
> It actually worked really well, I couldn't perceive the room being dark at all.

From the video, it seems there is quite a bit of latency between your blink and the lights blink. But it's an interesting project nonetheless!

remirk··on An impersonator issued a fake Reddit take down notice against SaveVideo
But adds a clearly visible and annoying animated watermark.
remirk··on Ignoring bulk change commits with Git blame (2019)
If you're interested in who added, modified or deleted a line you could also use the git pickaxe.

> git log -S"Hello World"

shows you all commits that either introduced, or deleted 'Hello World'.

remirk··on Raspberry Pi IRC Server: Setup Your Own Chat Network
I have a different experience. Mostly I find articles specifically written for 'Raspberry Pi' of lower quality than articles that talk about Debian. A lot of Raspberry Pi tutorials tell you to just run these commands without explaining why or what is the consequence. That leads to all kinds of bad practises like 'curl | sudo bash' or configurating services without auth.
remirk··on Why is lumber so expensive right now?
That is because the same happens every year. Even a bad AI or child (using OPs example) can plan for that. But when it comes to events that happen sporadically markets seem to have issues where most sane adults would be able to handle it.
remirk··on Farmers Deserve the Right to Repair Their Tractors
Great conclusion. This video could have been summarized in 10 minutes though. For the most part, no real information about the problem was given. I guess this is just how YouTube documentaires in 2021 are.
remirk··on Why we chose Elm for Humio’s web UI
That text is unreadable on low-brightness monitors. The contrast between the background gray and the text gray is quite low.
remirk··on Our plans for PeerTube v4
That project doesn't do federation, according to the issue tracker. Federation is the thing that makes PeerTube so special.
