rememberlenny··on DaVinci Resolve – A high-end video editing/post-production software program
Surprisingly, I’ve never tried Resolve, and seeing it here, I realize I should.

I started a company https://milk.video to build a better video editing tool for the browser. Think Figma, but for video.

I feel like a lot of modern editing tools are entirely for film or social media, but the most ROI based video at companies doesn’t quite fit either. There is a middle ground between control and utility around editing things like video calls, which I feel like is much harder than it should be.

If anyone is into the video editing/media future space, I’d love to chat! I’ve definitely gone deep into the topic.

rememberlenny··on Introduction to Google Cloud Functions
Does anyone here have good ways to monitor GCP cloud functions?

I feel the monitoring/instrumentation around errors/performance is not great, but could be.

rememberlenny··on How do you decaffeinate coffee?
Swiss water decaf is relatively easy to get. I've yet to see Supercritical CO2 decaf.

This is another good write up on the swiss water method: https://levels.io/swiss-water/

TLDR: Swiss Water > paint thinner

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Personal CRM: Note taking, the way it should be
Reminds me of Rapportative back when it was a gmail extension. This was my favorite part of it.

Love this
rememberlenny··on Show HN: I built a gamified forum to help hackers fund each other
It’s clear that the addition of money can incentivize some great community standards.

Are you focusing on any specific kinds of companies at first? Ie. IndieHackers or ProductHunt type?

Also, do you plan to run any competitions or challenges from the platform side?

Thank you for taking time to do this! All of the responses are really great.

Can you share why some companies may split stocks 51/49 between two founders, instead of 50/50?

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Developer Resume Prototype
Okay. This is amazing.

Is it possible to fill this out via API? Also can I print it? And for my company, is it possible to turn all resumes into this format?

Huge congrats on this.

rememberlenny··on CRDTs are the future
Check out http://www.roomservice.dev

Turns your front end app multiplayer with a library.

They manage the hard part and give you a simple API to get the benefits of realtime/syncing/diffing.

rememberlenny··on CRDTs are the future
+1 Roomservice.

CRDT as a service.

rememberlenny··on Show HN: Muse – Tool for Thought on iPad
When I bought an iPad pro, I asked friends what are their favorite apps. One person religiously vouched for how much Muse has affected the way they work on a day to day. Like me, they are a artist and in the software space, and felt Muse gave them the ability to both organize things spatially, while making use of the iPad's drawing features in everything they do.

I was able to get on the beta and found it quite satisfying as an application. Its basically the missing OS for iPad to let you do everything that you imagine the iPad is supposed to let you do.

+1 for roomservice to add multiplayer to any React app with a few lines of code

Roomservice is incredible for adding multiplayer mode to any app. Very cool to see you using them.
rememberlenny··on Datadog releases Incident Management, Profiler, Error Tracking, and more
These tools are major. The last company I was at extensively planned error budgets and SLAs, but the tooling was very squishy. Seeing the incident board and tooling around monitoring feels like they hit the nail on the head.

I don't know much about Datadog, but it seems like they are building exactly what their customers need.

rememberlenny··on Show HN: I built an After Effects for dummies
I signed up. This is immediately useful and totally worth the cost. Loving the easy video captioning.
rememberlenny··on Indian IT consultancies struggle against technological obsolescence
I had the same experience in Shanghai with a similar top tier agency. I was hired by a Fortune 500 apparel brand to be their digital project manager to handle the agency and Q/C deliverables.

It was 2013, but even then I was blown away by the extent to which the engineers on their end didn't use any modern version control. All of the deliverables were send over FTP updates, and zipped file directories.

rememberlenny··on Recursive, a free variable font for code and UI, now on Google Fonts
It depends. The font rendering process is based around "masters" which can vary in count. One font could have one master for all the weights, or multiple masters - for the bold/normal/light. Depending on the master count, the size can differ.

The key thing also is the number of web requests. This is not a trivial detail. One variable font can be less web requests.

rememberlenny··on The AirPods Pro “Rattlegate”
Apple will replace your AirPod Pros if you have this problem. You can submit the request online and they will just send you a new pair. Most likely you fall under the support warranty period, and it will be at no cost to yourself.
rememberlenny··on Goldman Sans
Font licenses are expensive. It's far cheaper to take something like Helvetica, and make slight changes to each of the glyphs, and rebrand it.

For context, I used to work on Google Fonts.

rememberlenny··on Ask HN: How do I reach making $1-1.5k/mo in 13 months?
If you have design or product mindset, then the idea of spending a few weeks to launch products make sense.

One good reference is the "stair step" approach. You can make something that a few people will pay $50-$100/month for. Maybe like a theme or a designed landing page. Then you can ramp up to make something that does $100-$250/month. Once you have those two, then aim for something that brings in $300-$600 month.

If the 1000-1500 range seems daunting, then aim for an intentionally low, but consistent amount, then repeat.

rememberlenny··on The Third Age of JavaScript
I was surprised there was only a mention of frameworks.

One obvious shift I’ve seen is in the use of the WASM and Web GL compiled applications. The likes of Figma and Superhuman are making incredible leaps in user performance.

I suspect serious companies will make strides here.

rememberlenny··on An Introduction to Variable Fonts (2019)
Its great for web usage but the context matters. It's not so black or white.

The font file that displays a weight is using a "master". Often an extreme expression of a font (thin/bold) is based on a master. The in between weights (normal/medium) can be interpolated without an explicit master. So you can get now just Roboto 200, but also Roboto 220, 250, 300, 315.

When the variable font file has many masters, then it has the possibility to be bigger than having individual fonts. This is why its not so straight forward.

In the case that you have an italic font, for example, you might need a specific master for the italic and the normal size.

The cases where it is smaller to use a variable font is when you have multiple weights that can be interpolated from less masters in the font file, than you would need font files. For example, having 300, 400, 600 font weight used in a variable file could be smaller if the 300/400/600 weights are all interpolated from the 400 weight master. This way the fonts thin/bold masters could be removed from the font.

Google Fonts team does some really cool stuff around this, where they minimize the size of the file being sent down the wire based on your browsers capability.

TLDR: Variable fonts can be faster. When it is, it's a lot faster. But its not black and white, so there isn't a straight forward way to know.
