rehemiau··on Another German regional government is switching from Linux to Windows
Linux Foundation needs to run a hardware support testing program for desktop linux to be successful. In a situation where hardware manufacturers don't support linux and there's no regression testing for community developed drivers, it will never be successful.
rehemiau··on MacBook Pro with i9 chip is throttled due to thermal issues, claims YouTuber
Louis Rossmann made a video[1] a while ago presenting how badly optimized is the cooling on new MacBooks. In short: Apple prefers their MacBook CPU and GPU to run hot and thermally throttle so that the user is happy because the machine is quiet, and then, more importantly, Apple is also happy, because when it overheats often it has a shorter lifespan so you’ll have to buy a new MacBook after 2-3 years.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wgeh7ZJRhZU

edit: Bear in mind these videos are about new MacBooks so there's no way to predict their usual lifespan. And I'm not saying all of them die after 2-3 years. Apple is simply optimizing for the 90% of users here, people doing mostly web browsing and using Microsoft Office. This does not put a sustained load on the CPU/GPU so these users will be fine.

rehemiau··on Convergence to Kubernetes
Sorry for being off-topic but do you have any links or tips on how to achieve this? My understand was that adding a user to the 'docker' group gives him 'sudo'-equivalent rights.

rehemiau··on Erlang OTP 21.0 is Released
And you can use it in a ETS match spec! This will allow to reduce copying of big maps in some use cases.
rehemiau··on Ask HN: Your favorite syntactic sugar from any language?
Pipeline operator ( |> ) in functional programming languages (Elixir, F#, Elm)
rehemiau··on How to Android without Google
Open Street Maps have much more users (and thus better ground coverage) in Europe, e.g. Germany. I think that's why the experience may be diametrically different for different people.
rehemiau··on Chatbots were the next big thing: what happened?
they just weren't
rehemiau··on Light Phone 2: A simple 4G phone with e-ink
I have JavaScript enabled but cookies disabled and it shows nothing for me too.
rehemiau··on How to Android without Google
I don't even run microg. Here WeGo is great for maps. Firefox is great as a browser, and has nice things like playing youtube in background (after adding an extension) or ublock. Slack works (without notifications), Spotify, Netflix, Authy, Signal... Many things have PWAs that work because they are platform-independent. For installing things there's F-Droid or APKUpdater. You could even use Facebook Messenger without Google and still get notifications. My battery is great and Android

rehemiau··on Lobotomizing Gnome
Budgie is a good, "lighter" replacement for Gnome if you want to keep using Gnome's software.
rehemiau··on Microsoft .Net Core telemetry is not opt-in
I believe it's the same with VSCode. All "telemetry.enableCrashReporter", "telemetry.enableTelemetry" and "workbench.settings.enableNaturalLanguageSearch" from user settings default to true.

rehemiau··on Show HN: ~200 byte in-browser, no JS, private notepad
Litewrite[1] is a great notepad that does save notes to browser localstorage, and has a syncing feature (you can sync through Dropbox, Google Drive or any RemoteStorage provider)

To be fair, the original announcement you linked is unreadable.
rehemiau··on Severe Security Advisory on AMD Processors
No-name security company from Israel (Intel-backed?) strikes back with propaganda. Masterkey requires getting malicious code into bios. Ryzenfall Fallout and Chimera require admin-elevated malicious code. TL;DR Nothing to worry about if you're not already fucked.
rehemiau··on Firefox 59 released
I noticed that too. Firefox does not work efficiently on macOS, unfortunately.

Additionally, Google doesn't do much to fix their web apps performance on Firefox. I even suspect the contrary.

rehemiau··on Show HN: A simple React table library using CSS Grid Layout
+1 There are many problems with html tables (like inconsistent buggy implementations between browsers) but grids don't fix them and introduce other problems. You can't group cells in rows / columns html elements. You can't write a simple css selector for a particular cell. You can't easily refer to a whole row with a css selector. You can't do stuff like "highlight the whole row on hover" because you wouldn't have a parent element to select. Grids are for grid layouts, and with current feature set they can't replace tables.
rehemiau··on Standing desks 'increase pain' and slow down mental ability, study suggests
Were the study participants used to working with a standing desk? One can't simply switch to a standing desk, you have to introduce it gradually, in order not to hurt yourself.
rehemiau··on We Must Cancel Everyone’s Student Debt, for the Economy’s Sake
No, this is just plain stupid. You (wherever student debt is so common) must prioritize early school education about personal finance and loan consequences.
rehemiau··on Reason ML toolchain
Could you elaborate on that? Do you mean async on frontend as in javascript async/await or do you mean async on the backend as in threads etc?
rehemiau··on MS to Give Windows 10 a ‘Modern’ Overhaul with Light Weight Polaris Windows Core
It is ugly on low resolution screens. With displays that need scaling the new rendering is actually better.

Also, they are currently working on moving more and more settings from the Control Panel to the UWP Settings app.

rehemiau··on Elixir v1.6 released: code formatter, dynamic supervisors, and more
Yes, and I do recommend all of pragprog elixir books and manning's elixir on action.
rehemiau··on Elixir v1.6 released: code formatter, dynamic supervisors, and more
You can have a .formatter.exs file where you'd specify input files for the formatter. You can't exclude files but you can achieve the same this way.
rehemiau··on Elixir v1.6 released: code formatter, dynamic supervisors, and more
For people wondering about what Elixir and the BEAM are offering, for a quick overview of the best features of this stack see [this talk]( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pO4_Wlq8JeI ).

If anyone starts learning Elixir now: I can recommend using VSCode with ElixirLS extension. Also: pragprog books, Sasa Juric's book. If you like video tutorials I've heard good things about PragDave's course.

rehemiau··on Elixir v1.6 released: code formatter, dynamic supervisors, and more
No. You can start learning elixir and you'll learn about how the BEAM works on the way. You'll also eventually learn about Erlang/OTP libraries and probably that's when you'll start reading basic erlang code but that should come (mostly) naturally. I included some tips in another comment here.
