I would not doubt if they got paid handsomely (if not, relatively well).

> But why was the non-standard way even an option?

People tend to have their own ideas on how things should be done. They should definitely be heard too. There is nothing wrong with questioning or doing things differently than current standards dictate as long as you have open, honest discussions.

recycleme··on Yahoo CEO Mayer Now Requiring Employees to Not Be Remote
One thing that can help with this is to have an open "informal" chatroom for all your employees (or for teams). Now if the person is completely silent, well, that's another issue.

It seems like some of its main attractions will require an internet connection. WiFi is not everywhere and my wireless network is really slow.

recycleme··on How I Force Myself to Take Breaks
> Somehow I feel they're safer in muscle memory than in 'normal' memory.

From my understanding, muscle memory is formed when a task is repeated frequently. It's basically like your "normal" memory caching these motions. So, in theory, you should at least _know_ your memory cached passwords.

> And there is the problem of getting locked out after too many invalid logins. I have enough passwords and variations that 3 times just aren't always enough attempts.

Ah, I hate it when that happens. Have you tried using a password manager like LastPass or 1password?

edit: https://lastpass.com/

recycleme··on How I Force Myself to Take Breaks
I'm getting off topic, but I'm amazed that you don't actually know some of the passwords you are typing. Also, if your passwords are becoming muscle memory, isn't it time to change them?

> Anyway, this tool won't work for me, and it looks a lot like addiction to me if you can't walk away when someone or something tells you to.

That's an interesting thought because people actually do go thru working addictions (aka workaholics). However, I don't know any workaholics that install this kind of software or monitor when they should take breaks. Perhaps this could apply to a recovering workaholic though.

recycleme··on Treadmill desks: How practical are they?
One benefit of a stand up desk, from my experience, is that it helps battle grogginess. Since I started using a stand up desk, I have rarely had any mid afternoon, post-lunch fatigue.

I just stand on the regular flooring (which is carpet in my case). My shoes have a relatively soft insole though.

recycleme··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
> you don't have space for detailed (and possibly constructive) criticism, you substitute witticisms because that's what gets retweeted (i.e. what the environment rewards). Maybe you read another snarky tweet just before and want to one-up it. Maybe you just worked on some messy code and are a bit frustrated and this looked like the right place to vent.

And that's basically what we shouldn't do.

recycleme··on What It's Like To Be Ridiculed For Open Sourcing A Project
People make mistakes all the time. If it's someone you know in person then you should probably give an apology (or vice-versa, depending on the situation). Someone has to own up because if it doesn't happen, you can end up with an ill workplace/relationship/whatever.

But the internet can be a strange place. How do you apologize to strangers? With blogs? I mean, these pieces are going around being viewed by hundreds of people. Is it really helping? I'm not sure, but, at the very least, people are trying.

recycleme··on Ask HN: Why does everything about NYC get downvoted or flagged into oblivion?
Yes but you need to have a certain amount of karma.
recycleme··on SSH client in Google Chrome
You will find many sarcastic comments in HN. This has nothing to do with Reddit. However, I do appreciate when HNers add in a "/s" or something alike to make it clear that sarcasm was used.

You can find quality conversations in Reddit but, more than likely, not in the default subreddits.

recycleme··on [dead]
HN doesn't seem to be full of assholes or trolls (especially when comparing it to 4chan or reddit). Some of us just have a strong opinion. That said, I don't think sites like these are for everybody. Top voted comments/stories can definitely stir up emotions.

I think the physical space has a lot to do with it. If you are using one computer then it needs to be easily accessible to both people. Don't sit in a desk with the computer in the corner (ie. you don't want your partner sitting behind you).

The senior should assume he will be slowed down (if working with a noob). This is just a matter of how much patience the senior has. One easy solution is to take breaks.
