readams··on Why scalpers can get tickets
Ticketmaster is mostly in the business of being the company that everyone hates so the artists can pretend to be helpless and of the people.
readams··on Airlines make more money from mileage programs than from flying planes
Air travel _is_ a commodity though.
readams··on How to beat the CAP theorem (2011)
Spanner does not give you availability in the case of a network partition between regions.
readams··on EV Chargers Should Be Dumber
The author seems to be overestimating what level 2 chargers actually do. They are really just switches that turn and off the electricity after you pay (and it verifies with the car). So his idea here of replacing all those complicated level 2 chargers with a regular outlet plus a way to pay is.. actually just what a level 2 charger already is.

DC fast chargers are considerably more complicated though.

readams··on Windows 11 system components use the default browser to open links in Europe
Default Bing and Microsoft integration. So ad revenue.
readams··on WordPress introduces 100 year domain registrations
Google never had unlimited email space. They launched at 1GB (which seemed huge) and increased it over the years, but it was never unlimited.
readams··on Scientists hit with massive bills after speaking at COVID-19 ‘webinars’
If you register a trademark, you'll get multiple fake bills in the physical mail for hundreds of dollars to similarly record the trademark in various "registers." The fine print says it's not a bill but a solicitation, but of course it's just a scam in reality.
readams··on Infrared may no longer be a punchline, as IEEE approves 9.6Gbps wireless light
They're not talking about point to point links here, but end-user devices.
readams··on Infrared may no longer be a punchline, as IEEE approves 9.6Gbps wireless light
I'm curious who has a problem that this solves. You need to have line of sight to something very nearby. So you'd need to wire 10Gb Ethernet to the LiFi points.

But then why not just use wired Ethernet?

readams··on Single Fire Hydrant Nets NYC $33,000 a Year
Doesn't appear to be any particularly obvious reason this would be a big problem.

Edit: Actually looks like they repainted the lines there in between Aug 2013 and Oct 2014 which makes it much more clear.

Here's 2013: https://goo.gl/maps/NF3xguY2P6FX4JUX7 And 2014: https://goo.gl/maps/Bk6W8bqndCb1Zjvd7

readams··on Single Fire Hydrant Nets NYC $33,000 a Year
This is the fire hydrant in question: https://goo.gl/maps/5C983vRcHCW6Zaq5A

Currently there's construction there so probably the fines are reduced.

readams··on Monster gravitational waves spotted for first time
It's not so much that you see a slightly different "down," but that space itself is changing such that the distance between e.g. your head and feet is (very) slightly altered.

Also space pressure difference is much less. A fuel tank might have just a few atmospheres inside, and of course a human pressure vessel will have a bit under 1 atmosphere inside, compared to the outside which is at ~0 atm.

At 4000m, the outside pressure is _400_ atmospheres compared to just one inside. It's way, way harder.

readams··on Mercedes beats Tesla to autonomous driving in California
Autopilot is just fancy cruise control. How many crashes have there been with cruise control turned on? It's just a completely meaningless thing to even look at. How many crashes would there have been during those miles without autopilot?
readams··on uBlock Origin 1.50.0
They haven't. When Chrome flips the switch it will not work well there.
readams··on It could cost $21B to clean up California’s oil sites, study finds
The secret here is they only investigate the things that support their narrative. In this article they actually explicitly stated they're looking to cover a specific list of negative things associated with the industry. They would not, for example, publish an article about how much lower our standard of living would be without the industry. Or to attempt to weigh the positives adjust the negatives of the industry.

So you can always publish "gold standard" journalism and yet still present a distorted version of the truth.

readams··on It could cost $21B to clean up California’s oil sites, study finds
ProPublica definitely has a viewpoint though and I would not recommend treating them as neutral.
readams··on Netflix will end its DVD service after 25 years
I was a loyal Netflix disk user for decades. I was in the habit of adding anything I heard of I wanted to watch to my queue; you could even add stuff that hadn't been released yet.

I only finally cancelled it during the pandemic when I starting finding that Netflix just stopped bothering to buy a lot of titles that I wanted to watch; lots of stuff that I knew was out on Blu-ray would only be available in DVD, or would not be available at all. And there weren't any new release movies coming out because of the pandemic.

So I finally gave up on the disks.

readams··on The end of a myth: Distributed transactions can scale
You are definitely not within nanoseconds using NTP
readams··on Binance sees $2B in outflows as troubles compound
It's really hard to place trades like this because there's so much counterparty risk and contagion from something like Binance collapsing is likely to make your ability to cash in on your bet difficult.
readams··on Utah is first US state to limit teen social media access
Hacker News would fit the definition also
readams··on Experimental library for scraping websites using OpenAI's GPT API
The license for this is pretty hilarious and it's something you should pretty obviously never accept or use under any circumstances.
readams··on If you own an M2 MacBook Air or MacBook Pro there’s an update for your cable
Sounds like the firmware is actually stored in RAM and loaded when you plug in the cable.

They actually do know about all the loopholes you're using. Using a loophole isn't about changing how you file your taxes, it's changing how you live your life to be more tax-efficient.
readams··on Simulation of tsunami from dinosaur-killing asteroid that brought 2.5 mile waves
There may not have been life before that. In the video they just say that if there was life it would have to begin anew.
readams··on Gattaca is still pertinent 25 years later
I don't think that's at all what you should get out of Gattaca on discrimination. Rather, even in a world where you have people who are statistically overwhelmingly likely to be better in every way, the morally right thing to do is _still_ to allow people the same opportunities to excel, and succeed or fail on their merits.
readams··on Ask HN: What happens if a nuclear missile is air-destroyed before detonation?
As you can imagine considerable thought has been put into how to make convincing decoys and to detect them. The reason it's possible at all to do the decoys is that they are released in space during a coast phase, so they follow the same trajectory as a high mass real warhead. They can add heating elements to get a similar thermal signature as well, and are designed to have similar radar signatures by having an appropriately metalized surface.
readams··on “tipflation” and “tip creep” are sparking a backlash
In California there is no tipped minimum. You have to be paid the normal minimum and then tips on top.
readams··on Pwning the all Google phone with a non-Google bug
You're assuming that Google isn't keeping track of security bugs they forward to their vendors. Almost certainly they opened a ticket in a different system and tracked it there.
readams··on AI is in danger of being swallowed up by copyright law
But you can still see the code and learn generally how to write code. Maybe you see a style of unit testing in a library, and decide to incorporate the techniques into your own code. This is not a copyright violation. It can't be, or all creative expression would be dead.
