readams··on OPML is underrated
Maybe try disabling your extensions?
readams··on Nine US states are teaming up to accelerate the adoption of heat pumps
I recently had to replace my air conditioner, and I looked into a heat pump, which in theory should be almost the same thing as an air conditioner, but it was so much more expensive than the AC that it was impossible to justify.

Markdown in Google docs: https://support.google.com/docs/answer/12014036?hl=en

Of course, if you want non wysiwyg, then don't use Google docs just use markdown in a text editor or install mediawiki or something.

It's easy to see there must be something wrong with this since if you get 10% faster 8 times, we can be sure that this doesn't mean you're 114% faster (1.1^8 = 2.14). You can't get more than 100% faster!

When you say something is 10% faster, what you mean is it took 10% less time to finish. So 19% is correct.

readams··on Why my print didn't output before a segmentation fault
I know you already know this but wanted to clarify that technically ub can "go back in time" and not print those earlier statements.

If they were measuring dangerous levels of bioaccumulation then you can be sure we'd hear about it. You'd need to live 1000 years though given the levels we're talking about.
readams··on Paying Netflix $0.53/H, etc.
That's sort of how YouTube premium actually works; creators are paid an allocation based on time watched for premium users to replace ad revenue.
readams··on A lost X-Files song
The worst part is that it's not apparent _why_ the link sucks. If they would at least have a message "Log in to view the rest of the thread" it would be much better. But I have clicked around in futility several times before to try to find where the rest of it is.
readams··on I hacked Magic the Gathering: Arena for a 100% win rate
It is absolutely not true that for any problem on a real computer it's possible to tell if it terminates, other than fairly trivial observations such as noting that if it runs longer than 2^(size of memory) steps it must be looping.

If you could, then I'd start using your "real computer" halt checker to instantly mine bitcoin or break all cryptography, so let me know when you figure out out.

It's not creating a VLAN by programming switches. It's all done in an overlay network.

All of that, and the strategies used to combat it (including a better oral vaccine), are described in detail in the article.

It's a lot less relevant to find some way to "trick" it into displaying ads in situations like this if users wouldn't normally see this, and it could easily be defamatory if you went on to claim that this was therefore routine or a serious problem.

For example imagine that it takes exploits, URL editing, or something similar to do it. The question here really is how much effort you really need to put in to get it to happen.

readams··on Why aren't motherboards mostly USB-C by now? (2021)
One issue with USB-C is that dust gets packed into the female side. I've found it can be in there so tight that even after attempting to clean it, the dust remains. But going in with a sewing needle, rubbing alcohol, and really scraping you can fix the port.
readams··on Almost no one pays a 6% real-estate commission except Americans
Real estate agents' job is not so much buying or selling houses but getting clients. There are so many agents ready to grab those insane fees that most agents can only manage an occasional transaction.

Then there are a few that are great at marketing themselves and can make truly insane money.

readams··on Is my toddler a stochastic parrot?
I suspect people will argue about whether AIs are truly conscious or just stochastic parrots even as all human-dominated tasks are replaced by AIs.

The AIs will be creating masterwork art and literature personalized for each person better than anything Shakespeare ever wrote or Michaelangelo ever sculpted, but we'll console ourselves that at least we're _really_ conscious and they're just stochastic parrots.

It's the maximum amount of time a Turing machine of size N can run. So if you want to know whether a Turning machine of size N or less will halt, just run it for BB(N) steps. If it hasn't halted by then, it never will.
readams··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
I did a test and entered "saute." It worked, except that the first 5 videos were all "Binging with Babish", so it was the same person pronouncing the word. Still pretty cool though, and a lot better than the SEO spammed "how to pronounce" YouTube videos.
readams··on Chaotic gravitational systems and their irreversibility to the Planck length
The "nondeterministic" in NP ("Nondeterministic polynomial") means that problems in NP can be solved in polynomial time by a nondeterministic Turing machine. Such a machine would be like what people incorrectly think quantum computers would be, in the sense that it would explore all the possible paths at once. It's the same meaning as in a nondeterministic finite automaton (NFA) vs a deterministic finite automaton (DFA).

The question of P vs NP is not whether we haven't determined if we can do a particular computation (either at all or in polynomial time). It's whether a deterministic Turing machine could solve in polynomial time the same class of problems that we _know_ a nondeterministic Turing machine could solve in polynomial time.

Of course, the nondeterministic Turing machine is not a physically realistic model of computation.

readams··on Windows 12 May Require a Subscription
Unfortunately I think what we'll get is an operating system that you pay for and that feeds you ads and wastes your time. Both are possible!
readams··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
No you definitely don't want the phone doing confusing and weird things during an emergency. You want it to behave in the way the user is accustomed.

pdflatex doesn't really help here. pdflatex allows you to bypass dvi, the native TeX output format. The input for latex may well still include eps image files though.
