rdslw··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
Yeah, yeah, Amazon is doing it because they love us.

It's for sure simple mistake they specifically asks to calculate all this intangible things and reduce it to money amount they gets from citi.

So how about..... NO!

Quote from RFP: "Please provide a summary of total incentives offered for the Project by the state/province and local community. In this summary, please provide a brief description of the incentive item, the timing of incentive payment/realization, and a calculation of the incentive amount"

rdslw··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
It's good not to forget the toplevel posts, which quotes that Amazon ASKS specifically for money amount.

"Please provide a summary of total incentives offered for the Project by the state/province and local community. In this summary, please provide a brief description of the incentive item, the timing of incentive payment/realization, and a calculation of the incentive amount"

Read their RFP for more.

rdslw··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
> The choice is between amazon + tax breaks and nothing.

You're completely wrong. Amazon WILL build HQ2. This is a zero sum game from citizens/cities perspective. No city in the US should offer such taxcut, and then, surprisingly, this money is spent by amazon on taxes and effectively given to the citizens in one of the cities.

If you allow this, you put in place scenario I described here: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=15193611

rdslw··on Amazon to Build Second HQ in North America
what a year do I live in that governments must bow to corpos and politely submit RFP document asking for tax money .... reduction.

There was once a story on hackersnews why this (demanding tax cuts) its unethical on much larger scale than race etc. It went like this (forgive my memory, english, and feel free to correct it):

There were two states, neighboring, with similar budgets and number of people. They werent rich, there werent many benefits for citizens in each state, yet people managed to get by. Then one day, a company came to them and asked, who can give me corpotax subsidy ? I'll build a factory there and employ maaaany people. State A objected, while state B agreed. That was a 10 years deal. A lot of people from State A migrated to state B in search of work. 5 years into the deal, company thrived: no taxes to be paid = most competitors in both states are killed. Company is building another factory. Again asking both states of tax subsidy. This time, due to loss of population, being on verge of collapse, state A had to offer super deal. Company built second factory there. The pendulum is swinging the other direction. The rest of the cycle is left for the reader.

Because population is relatively constant, allowing this shenanigans is effectively allowing corpos to be tax free at the expense of states^H^H^H citizens. Because states or nations are WE, and asking for such reduction is a zero sum game.

This gains of capital because of amazon HQ2 WILL HAPPEN no matter what or where. Asking for tax deduction is abuse and effectively reducing total citizenhood wellness/capital in benefit of Amazon, payed by all other states where HQ2 is not built.

The best policy for all states and cities in USA is saying: no matter who will you choose, we will NOT give you a subsidy. And if you want to talk about offshore outsourcing, let me rephrase it: all countries in the world should show the A a middle finger in unison.

rdslw··on Facebook recruiting and Unix systems
Commenting just to let you know. You did nothing wrong.

Never forget who reached for who. It's FB in desperate need that they pick workers from students these days.

Also, trying to (yuck) trick you into providing names of others companies - hahaha - it's like you asking him: what's the maximum salary FB can offer or similar questions. Disgusting simply because any sane person (your friend e.g.) would suggest you never provide that to counter negotiating party. Asking for this info is not far (in effect) to asking about age/race etc. This data is intended to have more bargaining power on FB side. Unethical.

And NB: it's the recruiter who introduced 'UNIX-like' into conversation.

Take your time, they all (companies) will bend. It's an employee market.

You did a great job!

rdslw··on Writing a SQLite clone from scratch in C
I'm also shocked. About two things: by the pure speed, and for me being surprised how fast it loads.

Being surprised about webspeed in 2017 sounds like heresy.

rdslw··on An update on the state of the Reddit repositories
Interesting third argument. Based on work by google and published papers, monorepos have some advantages. Of course not always and not everywhere.

But here, reddit connects it with service oriented architecture. Somehow i dont get it.

rdslw··on Typing with pleasure, and low latency
TL;DR of very good while long ;) article:

Use a responsive editor (makes the most difference).

* Use a low-latency keyboard, if possible.

* Choose programs that add global keyboard hooks wisely.

* Turn off unnecessary “image enhancers” in you monitor.

* Enable stacking window manager in your OS (e.g. in Windows 7, 8).

TESTED EDITORS RESULTS, Average latency, ms

rdslw··on U.S. judge says LinkedIn cannot block startup from public profile data
No, they did tell then stopped on 5th product.

LIN gives this information (product price) for first few questions, then if you ask about 5th price they say: 403, no more for you. WHILE IF at the same moment, different person (or you in proxy-ip-disguise) comes and asks for 5th product price, LIN happily (and publicly) gives this information.

And if the person comes wearing googlebot tshirt, LIN drops to knees and give a ..... full-db-dump-job ;) Bing/Baidu thsirts also fit. Source: www.linkedin.com/robots.txt

HiQ simply says: that's unfair you can't decide who is good and whois bad. Effectively LIN bans any google competitor (documented case).

rdslw··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
Its not that simple.

Its true that push2factor have some disadvantages, but it has one really strong advantage above pure TOTP: phishing dosnt work as the 2factor is send directly to the site and cant be mitmed at your terminal. Read about it.

rdslw··on How Chrome OS, Termux, YubiKey and Duo Mobile make for great usable security
In fact you dont.

I use dell xps 13 for half a year and I have 3200x1800 resolution. When buying a xps you have two screens to choose from.

rdslw··on Google launches Hire, a new service for helping businesses recruit
So yeah, she got 30m tax reduction and spent 150m. net "loss": 120m.

and you consider it bad because she could have chosen paying those 30m taxes and keeping the rest (instead of donating it) ?

rdslw··on Terminal and shell performance
As far as I keep fingers crossed for your efforts, you will not achieve pure text console speed (or even be close to it), linux one the people can easily compare to iterm.

There is a lot of reasons, mostly: font rendering, unicode handling, all effects, while pure text is simply copying memory areas and nothing more.

full answer: https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/41225/can-a-termina...

rdslw··on Terminal and shell performance
I recommend this to every terminal user.

I'm a fast typer, but this is 2017 - computers are fast, right? Nope. On newest, maxed dell xps there is a HUGE latency difference I feel if I use pure linux console vs any graphical one (is it gnome/windows or mac).

Typing and working with pure text is really fast and you INSTANTLY feel and see the difference. Try it.

rdslw··on Facebook can track your browsing even after you've logged out, judge says
UserAgent is still top culprit (16 bits of identifying information) followed by browser plugins (12bits) then WebGl (12b), canvas (9b), language (if not english nor chinese) and then fonts at 5bits.

Total is around 20bits (due to overlaps).

YMMV.
