rdslw··on Show HN: We built open OpenRouter that turns usage into a better model
the business model, I suspect, is classic rug-pull in some time after building user base.

proof: boldly claiming being open source in literally first sentence, while cowardly hiding on-by-default telemetry (WTF??) in truly last paragraph of readme.

sorry to sound harsh, but this is typical old era playbook here.

in the era of AI, fortunately, such products has much lower value. people and VCs didn’t yet tune to it.

rdslw··on Show HN: We built open OpenRouter that turns usage into a better model
impressive only if using pre-gpt era assumptions about saas/products/software.

unfortunately a small team can reproduce it in two months, which greatly lowers value of it.

we, as a collective, have to change our value-judging logic and tune it to post AI world.

rdslw··on Show HN: Shitty – fast terminal. Memory-unsafe and faster than yours
It is still slow.

Honestly I do not understand those last ten years craziness about 'new-native-gpu-turbo-ultra-xhigh-max-terminal' <insert current trend here>.

(my) battle tested urxvt under X11 is STILL faster then shitty (and all others):

## ascii (95 MiB cat, best wall of 3)

| terminal | wall | user | sys | throughput | |---|---|---|---|---| | urxvt | 0.78s | -s | -s | ~122 MiB/s |

rdslw··on Show HN: Shitty – fast terminal. Memory-unsafe and faster than yours
these days on HN, if you oppose someone, you get dead-flagged.

I vouched for your comment, as I find it perfectly 'not agreeing' answer.

rdslw··on AI is slowing down
There are three things to make money:

- tell lies to ones who want to hear lies -> riches

- tell truth to ones who want to hear truth -> modesty

- tell truth to ones who want to hear lies -> bankruptcy

p.s. read it on a blog name I dont remember :(

rdslw··on The desperation of NYTimes
If my polite neighbour smiles, holds the door, but also pisses on my doormat every few days, I call him LOUD a jerk and tell him to stop. I never approve the piss because he said good morning.
rdslw··on Programming Still Sucks
Thank you for writing this and your below longer comment.

I printed them with OP to remind me any time i’m afraid somebody can criticize my work and that it’s not worth to produce/write/publish.

no matter how good, there will always be people like you here, so no need to worry.

rdslw··on Qwen3.6-35B-A3B: Agentic coding power, now open to all
interesting, I just tried this very model, unsloth, Q8, so in theory more capable than Simon's Q4, and get those three "pelicans". definitely NOT opus quality. lmstudio, via Simon's llm, but not apple/mlx. Of course the same short prompt.

Simon, any ideas?

rdslw··on The Codex App
all the examples for visual UI, are tasks which already are (or soon be) done by the agent, not human. hence not needed.

I suspect that final(*) UI is much more similar to TUI: being kind of conversational (human <> AI). Current GUIs provided by your bank/etc are much less effective/useful for us, comparing to conversation way: 'show/do me sth which I just need'. Not to mention (lack of) walled garden effect, and attention grabbing not in the user interest (popups, self-promo, nagging). Also if taking into account age factor. Also that we do not have to learn, yet another GUI (teach a new bank to your mom ;). So at least 4 distinct and important advantages for TUI.

My bet: TUI/conversation win (*).

*) there will be some UI where graphical information density is important (air controller?) especially in time critical environments. yet even there I suspect it's more like conversation with dynamic image/report/graph generated on the go. Not the UI per se.

rdslw··on A macOS app that blurs your screen when you slouch
Congrats on the app.

I'm seeing that "great-ai-unlock" is happening. I see in last month a lot of new software being codeveloped with claude/codex/gemini/you-name it.

Before, it was too costly to do sth like the Posture app: here, you would have to know Swift and apple apis to write such tool. Would you be C# (very good) programmer with free weekend, and an idea: no cookie for ya.

These days, due to "great-ai-unlock" your skills can be easily transferred and used to cross platforms boundary and code such useful app in a weekend or so.

Jevons paradox is indeed working (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jevons_paradox).

rdslw··on Show HN: XPipe, a shell connection hub for SSH, Docker, K8s, VMs, and more
Can you expand with more technical explanation how are those two points implemented:

- You can bring your shell environments / init scripts / aliases with you in a noninvasive way. I.e. you don't have to modify the remote system dotfiles, when you connect through xpipe it will set up any scripts you want to have available automatically

- You can link up your password manager with your SSH client and other connection methods that require passwords

Feel free to write here or refer to any url you recommend.

Thank you, and good luck with your product!

rdslw··on Ente Auth: open-source Authy alternative for 2FA
Authy has one superb feature: you can switch a toggle to lick/unlock accessing a vault from new devices.

quite handy and can further increase security (trading it of course with lack of recovery would you lost all your devices).

rdslw··on Spreadsheet Assassins – A short history of "software as a service"
In this article using it is very MISLEADING, exactly as Closi writes above.

Exercise: compare net profit of Visa/Master card to net profit of those "highly profitable" saas marvels.

Exercise two: compare gross profits of them.

Result: whole paragraph turns not being true while not aligned with the article opinion and showing actually opposite :-D

p.s. I do agree with the overall article :)

rdslw··on Sell for half a billion and get nothing (2021)
> Taking VC cash is very often a game of deciding whether you want to gamble it all on faster growth or take less risk for less cash, but with the additional caveat that the investors you take on often will cheer for the "gamble it all" option as they have many parallel bets while you as the founder has one.

This shall be printed in block letters in a red frame ahead of most Paul Graham essays about milk, honey and richies in startup land.

He and VCs push theirs agenda because he has hundreds of bets, while founder has one.

They play different game and are quite quiet about it.

rdslw··on A 1.55 R⊕ habitable-zone planet hosted by TOI-715
I don't have necessary knowledge to explain this, yet while using gpt4 to help me parse the abstract, gpt4 without missing a heartbeat, changed it to "Insolation refers to the amount of stellar energy a planet receives on its surface. The value "0.67s" indicates that TOI-715 b receives 67% of the solar energy Earth receives from the Sun. "

Friend of mine has 3 yrs old. The "dolphin" is in constant use by the child. "What is he doing now?" " Let's check what dolphin is playing with today". "What does it say" "Does he miss me?" "Let's play with him".

It quickly became pal of the child.

Friend told that is one in top 5 toys of the child now :)

rdslw··on Stackoverflow is investing into baking GenAI
Yep. they're in deeeep panic mode due to AI.

They're currently sending, massive unsolicited e-mail campaign to all (sic!) stackoverflow users. Message they're sending below. Please find 6 places where they try to address AI directly and indirectly :)

Stack Overflow is investing heavily in enhancing the developer experience across our products, using AI and other technology, to get people to solutions faster.

As part of that initiative, we’ve launched Stack Overflow Labs.

Here is where we’ll share our experiments, demos, insights, and news - across all Stack Overflow products. We plan to continually add to this site as we experiment and release new solutions. You can sign up to get previews and early access to features that will be available on stackoverflow.com.

Our guiding principles for Stack Overflow Labs

Find new ways to give technologists more time to create amazing things. Accuracy is fundamental. That comes from attributed, peer-reviewed sources that provide transparency. The coding field should be accessible to all, including beginners to advanced users. Humans should always be included in the application of any new technology.

rdslw··on Terence Tao on GPT-4
Nope.

Cost of implementing better process for all carpenters is significantly higher, than all carpenters still using bad process + _one_ AI being able to clean it for carpenter, plumber, translator, developer (you name it, you got it).

Not even entering laziness/corposlowness gardens etc.

rdslw··on DIY Raspberry / Orange Pi NAS That Looks Like a NAS – 2023 Edition
I helped a friend to create home storage with two units (redudancy) of gnubee PC1 (2.5" drives), and setup is ultra useful, fast, low power and reliable (contrary to sibling comments ;) -> highly recommend it.

Usage (few years of happy usage):

* openwrt custom build with patches

* FDE for all drives using linux cryptsetup, including custom patches for cryptoengine (critical)

* big (read x TB) repos served by locally (on gnubee) run syncthing

* big files served for local media devices over ksmbd, (read 4k streams ;)

* drives in raid1 (linux mdraid)

ultra low power for 24/7, with 90% of energy budget for drives.

Highly recommended! But yes, I agree that it required tinkering, skills and time to set up.

rdslw··on Pi-hole: Network-wide ad blocking
I do and recommend three things:

1. have separate vlan (named vspy ;) for all the external devices like appletv etc

2. all traffic to internet dns ports (53, 853 etc) is completely blocked from this vlan

3. all trafic to ips list (using ipset matching for speed) containing manually curated few dozens of publicly known DoH servers (including 8.8.8.8 et. al) is completely blocked from this vlan

In other words: use my own dns server or go away.

all services works fine (apple, google, tv/movies streaming etc.) while being in this vlan, and I see "my" devices continuously hit the 2&3 bariers.

rdslw··on Golang disables Nagle's Algorithm by default
you clearly (in this post and yours others) did not read OP and other comments on this thread where it's documented that it WAS NOT design decision. why use it as an argument where it's written it was NOT by design.

the same with LFS -> this post clearly shows detriment to LFS usage, and probably many other tools written with golang.

'most circumstances': prove it, or dont use.

rdslw··on BorgBackup: Deduplicating archiver with compression and encryption

rdslw··on Project Possible: Ascending 14 peaks in 7 months
And money. Don’t forget about money injection.

As they say: money buys confidence.

rdslw··on Project Possible: Ascending 14 peaks in 7 months
Nope. Difference is:

You spent one month to prepare huge party for your 100 people extended family, just alone and spending 1000€

Vs

You did the same with 200 people crew, while spending 200 000€. It took one day.

What you praise on him is praising money :-/

Edit: He did, while on oxygen, being teleported by heli (sic!) directly between base camps with literally 100+ support team (including on climbs) all WHILE SPENDING 10+ MLN USD ON IT. The other (previous) guys did not.

Please go check and read mountain community opinion on him.

rdslw··on Project Possible: Ascending 14 peaks in 7 months
No it’s not.

This is money project.

1. Financial side of his project (sponsors, movies, advertising) is tremendous. This is financial project done mainly for money, while hiding it.

2. Listen to any of his live interviews. Dude is arrogant as hell.

3. Whole Sherpas motiv is virtue signaling (and clever fake shield for do not criticise me) - this was even written about!

4. Check his media presence: i t is massively huge. Done for revenues and attention.

5. Difference between him and Kukuczka original feat is only one: MONEY (Ok maybe two: Nims ego)

6. Check what of him thinks mountain guides, and people say on r/mountaineering/ - disdain and criticism.

Money buys things like that. And is the main cause of it, while being mentioned in fine print only (another sign of fakeness)

T h i s i s s i m p l y m o n e y.

And ego. A lot of ego with arrogance sauce :-(

rdslw··on What Peng Shuai reveals about one-party rule
Looking at your posts on HN (this topic and others) you clearly and plainly defend CCP (chinese gov) on many of it's policies (even if being atrocities), while trying to evade questions and whitewash topics. You did try defend CCP Taiwan stance.

You either lie, either are (in my opinion) delusional, because your writing here 'CCP is open to criticism', on this very thread about Peng. This is nuts. Literally 30 minutes after publication of her _personal_ post, remind you she is a China citizen, the post is removed (no trial! pure force gov action) and discussion is actively blocked in China. It is a very simple cognitive task in reasoning and critical thinking, to conclude what does it mean for CCP and China in general, if there are _personal_ things not allowed to be aired there.

If you can't grasp it, do a simple exercise: on your next trip to China (or ask your china based family) do a post about Peng, asking for answers, reposting her post etc -> you will be healed quickly and promptly by the very CCP.

p.s. I'm just a guy, my opinion is mine, I may be wrong. Yet I observed your karma on this thread, literally hundreds of people dont agree with you on HN. I would start thinking about me if that many HN people tell me I'm wrong.

rdslw··on What Peng Shuai reveals about one-party rule
but CCP is not, (which is easily check able), so speaks a lot about your inability to connect facts.

Besides, not a reason to look at Taiwan's future, while you can look at Honk Kong past two years.
