rcstank··on Tell HN: DigitalOcean is doing layoffs
My experience has been that companies will either terminate effective immediately with some sort of severance, or they'll give a notice, where you're on the "books" with them as far as employment goes, but you'd surrender all work hardware and your account would be locked out. You're effectively laid off while you find another job. Your severance in that situation is the fact you're still on payroll for however long your severance period would be.

It’s not fraud at all. It’s following tax laws.

What’s your interpretation of easy? These types of firearms aren’t cheap. For example, a Barrett .50 BMG M82A1 is like $12,000. No website is going to ship it directly to you either. It has to go through an FFL which will perform a background check.
rcstank··on The Koh-i-Noor diamond, and why the British won’t give it back (2017)
How do we know which Native Americans to give it back to? The land I sit on has been taken by conquest by many different tribes.

For anyone stumbling across this: Whether you’re “overemployed” or not, it is a great idea to freeze The Work Number for your own privacy.

Treasury Direct Series I Bonds are yielding 9.62% right now. You can't touch the money for a year, but it's great for an emergency fund after 1 year.

To add to this for next year, you can also purchase $5k more with a tax refund, for a total of $15k per year. A basic strategy is to plan ahead and over pay with your final paycheck of the tax year by updating your W-4 to withhold more to enable a tax refund if you weren't already expecting one.

rcstank··on Ask HN: Tesla is making us move or quit. Would I get severance?
100% lawyer up. In a constructive dismissal, time is of the essence here. If you wait too long, Tesla can make a claim that the fact you stayed on for a period of time after, their RTO is not a case of constructive dismissal.
rcstank··on Elon Musk makes $43B unsolicited bid to take Twitter private
Why would he get a fine from the SEC? He filed this takeover with the SEC in the first place. He's following all of their rules.
rcstank··on What do I do when my boss is sabotaging interviews?
Is it really a problem? I don't understand this mindset. If a person offers value to a company (and vice versa), there's a mutual benefit. Why should either party be forced or coerced to stay in business with one another? Employees may just as much leave on a whim as they could be fired or laid off. There are bad people all over the world. The best option is for this employee to start looking ASAP. Once they have a solid job lined up, they could then submit their resignation. In the letter, write a detailed response as to why they're leaving.

Jobs are not hard to come by right now. Outside of tech, there are places hiring left and right. It's a madhouse, and not only minimum wage things people criticize. There are some great paying jobs out there in the trades. People are needed badly.

> Please consider most people aren't in that position.

Many people could (and should) plan, but choose not to. It's wise for anyone to set aside an emergency fund. The concept isn't hard, but the discipline is, whatever the cause may be.

Many vendors do block sales of firearms (or anything resembling 2A) due to similar risk factors. It's extremely difficult to find a gateway and processor that's 2A friendly. The small number of vendors that are 2A friendly usually require an FFL to further mitigate risk.

If you can find a gateway and processor that has an underwriting team that will not require an FFL, that would be a sight to behold.

Why is that a bad thing? People are smart. They’ll figure something out just like humans have done for centuries.
rcstank··on Amazon Is Creating Company Towns Across the United States
Common sense says otherwise. If this were true, Walmart would eventually siphon all of the money out of that town. Have we seen this happen widespread? Many people commute to larger towns/cities for work which may only be a 15-20 minute drive.

No debt but a residence mixed with a 3-6 month emergency fund gives a lot of freedom. I know that’s not that case for many, but the emergency fund is my safety net and if I need, that’s how I would manage to do it. I’d also try to line up a job prior to my departure.
rcstank··on Mining Bitcoin with pencil and paper: 0.67 hashes per day (2014)
GP claimed that generating dollars using electricity is bad. Isn't that what the majority of companies are doing?

Edit: that's my whole point: mining BTC is generating value by verifying transactions. In turn, the miner gets paid for their work.
