rciorba··on A New Chapter for PyPy
I did. Inherited a legacy web app that did stupid things in Python in memory (basically search and aggregation).

I realized a rewrite was the best course of action, but in the meanwhile the old thing had to stay up and running, and as the volume of data increased, it started to run in to HTTP timeouts as often requests took longer than 2 minutes.

I moved the thing to PyPy, and got about a 30% speedup from that. Only one lib had to be replaced with a pure python alternative, as it was using a C extension.

It bought me enough time to finish the new implementation (duplicate the data in Elasticsearch, hey presto from over a minute to about a second to get results).

For some workloads PyPy's JIT can do wonders.

Even in previous generation models (2014-2018 I think) the touchscreen is only enabled when the car isn't moving. For me using the rotary knob became muscle memory so I don't ever use the touchscreen anyway.

I had that happen recently. Fortunately I was not in a rush. I had to complain on social media after the situation hadn't been resolved in a couple of weeks, then magically I got some proper support.
rciorba··on Mozilla’s DNS over HTTPs
It could be.

Since Mozilla makes a browser it was natural they'd try to solve it at the application level and not wait until M$ and other privacy loving OS vendors solve the problem.

Oh my! I've wanted this for a while now. Which reader do you use?
rciorba··on Ask HN: What are some example of low tech improving your life?
Not sure it qualifies as low enough tech but: a power socket with a timer. I would put my laundry in the washing machine and set the socket to turn on at 7:30. It would finish at about 9:00, I'd hang the laundry to dry then leave for work.

An interesting approach. When I worked at a university and had 100+ machines to handle (back in the WinXP days), we just used udpcast + sysprep to do full disk cloning. We never bothered with individual machines, if anything ever went wrong we just wiped the whole thing and re-cloned it.

Keeping 100+ machines up and running, and caring for individual ones sounds like a whole lot of work. Admittedly we got away with it because those were lab computers used by students, and data persistence did not matter as much (each student had a samba share mounted, which was on a central server and had backups)

I do wonder if full disk cloning + sysprep is still an option with newer versions of windows.

Here's my take on when people do this:

Unless someone prefaces their statements with a disclaimer (like "just for the sake of the argument"), I will assume in good faith they believe their own statements. Any later claim to the contrary leaves me with the following choice to make: were they lying then, or are they lying now.

rciorba··on PyPy v7.0.0: triple release of 2.7, 3.5 and 3.6-alpha
I did do but not for anything high traffic.

At work we had this internal service that did search entirety in memory, using sorted lists. When it was initially written, years ago, that was deemed "good enough".

By the time I joined the company a little over a year ago, search requests were sometimes exceeding 2 minutes, and would be killed due to HTTP timeout (somehow users were OK with search taking a long time, they were just annoyed that now sometimes it didn't work at all). While I was working to rewrite the whole thing to push data to ES and do everything from there, the old system needed to keep running.

So I moved it over to PyPy. I did need to swap blist(C extension) for sortedcontainers (pure python), but that was a minimal change. Search got about 30% faster, enough to keep chugging along while the rewrite happened.

rciorba··on Reasons Python Sucks
> Take lists: some operations are methods, some are functions, some mutate the list, some make a copy, some are global, some are in a module.

Let's take the list type, the public methods are: 'clear', 'copy', 'count', 'extend', 'index', 'insert', 'pop', 'remove', 'reverse', 'sort'

Obviously as the names imply `copy` returns a new list, and `count` returns an integer. Neither mutate the list.

For the rest of it: methods mutate the list. There are some builtin functions that do similar things, but those always a new object (sorted, reversed)

Mazda's 2.0 Gasoline Skyactiv is sold as both 120 and 165 HP. Same engine, same brakes, same clutch, different ecu mapping. The only mechanical difference is the gear box's final drive ratio (the 120's has longer gears for better fuel economy). Why would they do this? I assume economy of scale makes it cheaper.

It should be mandatory to hit MPG and emission targets, not to force a certain technology.
rciorba··on Inside VW’s Campaign of Trickery
In the EU, with Euro 5+6 particulate limits for gasoline engines have been imposed as well. The previous rationale was "no limits are required because particulates are a diesel issue", which is bonkers because if it were so, one could simply apply the same limits to both and the gasoline engines would have passed with flying colours. My guess is heavy lobbying from automakers managed to keep these unregulated for so long, since indeed direct injection (which seems to be the new norm) makes fuel economy better but particulates worse.

From the article: "LVE stands for Lightweight Virtual Environments, a proprietary technology from CloudLinux."

I'm confused about the proprietary bit. As far as I can find they released a kernel module in the past that was in violation of the GPL but then redressed the issue by releasing the sources under the GPL. Does anyone know what the current state is?
