rch··on Remote work is gutting downtowns
Even as higher income people become more geographically distributed, they'll naturally support locavore options, cultural event spaces, an so on, in smaller town centers.

I do wish there were more resources to help places experiencing rapid influx manage growth more intelligently. Towns shouldn't have to endure a big box store phase before investing in livable forms.

rch··on Archaeologists ask Netflix to reclassify Graham Hancock’s docuseries as fiction
I live in Boulder, so I see more junk pseudoscience than usual, and I think it's out of control.

It's worth noting that noted nonsense profiteer Gaia TV is based here, and I've had conversations with employees who make no apologies for what they're knowingly doing (and one who was uneasy about it, FWIW).

rch··on Emergency declared and curfew imposed following North Carolina power grid attack
I wonder how well stocked the U.S. is with replacement inventory for facilities like this.
rch··on Ask HN: Alternatives to The Economist?
I'm a FT subscriber, and I can also recommend the Neue Zürcher Zeitung (https://nzz.ch/english).

They tend to have excellent data-driven reporting, and substantive articles.

rch··on Lightweight Alpine VMs on macOS
They're also trivial to install without virtualization. Postgres has been one of the first things I install on a new laptop for over a decade now.
rch··on Ask HN: Azure has run out of compute – anyone else affected?
Thanks largely to k8s, running on multiple cloud providers and your own hardware is a lot more convenient than it was a few years ago. Component interfaces and protocols are a lot more consistent across platforms as well.
rch··on Show HN: A decentralized semantic web built atop Activity Pub
It's a really interesting project - thank you! I'm looking forward to exploring a few possibilities.
rch··on Show HN: A decentralized semantic web built atop Activity Pub
That's the client.
rch··on Show HN: A decentralized semantic web built atop Activity Pub
Is there a license for the server? Sorry if I'm overlooking it.
rch··on Takahē: An efficient ActivityPub Server for small installs with multiple domains
I wonder if Postlite would work.

Actually that looks more like an interactive client.... https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=30875837

rch··on Kite is saying farewell and open-sourcing its code
> the Kite Engine, which performs all the code analysis and machine learning 100% locally on your computer (no code is sent to a cloud server).

I was never aware they changed the architecture to keep code analysis entirely local. I would have purchased a subscription, had I known.

rch··on Show HN: Semantic Video Search
Nixpkg, w/ allowUnfree.

If you try it I'd be interested in learning about your experience, as I'm looking into doing something similar early next year (distribution, not similar to the app itself).

rch··on Air Force, FBI raid homes in probe of Area 51 website
If they have a sign on the fence that says 'no photography' then that would probably apply to a weather balloon irrespective of distance.

The signs are also probably not needed.

rch··on Python 3.12.0 is to remove long-deprecated items
I moved to nixpkgs from pyenv about a year ago, with positive results. I think it's worth the initial effort.
rch··on Show HN: Campus FM – live stream college and independent radio stations
I was happy to see KTRU (Rice) is available.

I used to listen to that all the time growing up in Houston. The blues show was excellent.

rch··on IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4 servers can reduce energy consumption by 75%
Makes sense. I'd seen Telum in the description, but I guess I was inferring too much from a note about 'changing workloads'.
rch··on IBM LinuxONE Emperor 4 servers can reduce energy consumption by 75%
It's not immediately clear either way, but I'm guessing this is based on composable / software defined infrastructure components, like e.g. CXL memory.
rch··on Signal Introduces Stories
This post seems say that they'd rather avoid the difficult programming challenges of working with the varied devices and protocols people use for communication generally, and just compete with other walled garden apps instead. I wish them luck, but it's a different trajectory than they were on a year or two ago.
rch··on Snap Store administrators removed signal-desktop from Ubuntu Snap
Yeah, I regret ever mentioning the project to people.
rch··on Quirks, Caveats, and Gotchas in SQLite
I've run into situations where I need a db, but all I have is Python, so the embedded SQLite is my best option. It would be ideal if the interface was fully compatible with postgres (or a practical subset), even if SQLite was handling storage under the hood.
rch··on Coaching for “Normals”?
How about Elle Morrill?

rch··on Gmail 2FA causes the homeless to permanently lose access 3 times a year
It seems to me that the government service responsible for providing the phone should be expanded to provide a permanent digital identity, including email, and a lasting phone number. A permanent address (open and scan, with selective forwarding) for physical mail would also be worth investigating.
rch··on SAT score distributions in Michigan
I attended prep courses and they didn't have an impact on my scores, measured by before and after practice testing (~1500 in the late 90s).

What did help is that I was encouraged to read a lot from a young age, which seems fairly accessible to most families.

Support your local libraries.

rch··on Imagen Video: high definition video generation with diffusion models
And copilot-like code, possibly Q1 2023.
rch··on 50 Years Ago, Sugar Industry Quietly Paid Scientists to Point Blame at Fat (2016)
I've noticed a trend in the press towards equating pseudoscience with science, but I'm still not sure what the objective might be. Curious.
rch··on 58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere
Designers want the latitude to place ads where they're likely to be effective. How does an ads company which incidentally also provides a browser balance that interest?
rch··on 58 bytes of CSS to look great nearly everywhere
Content on the web used to flow pretty well irrespective of those factors. The 'liquid' layout in Adobe's pdf reader works as it should, as does the simplified view in Chrome (which is suspiciously only offered on sites without ads). So, I'm optimistic that simplified layouts are worth pursuing.
rch··on A small town that saved its only grocery store by buying it
I shop at a couple of co-ops, and they're excellent.

Ideally I'd like to chat with a lawyer knowledgeable about co-op formation to create an open template for a version designed to leverage a long term lease from a nonprofit land trust. The structure could be mixed use to include housing; resident owned, appreciation moderated, with support from the trust for affordability.

I've seen a few organizations that might help in a generic way, but lawyers haven't been interested in the 'open' aspect.

rch··on The Framework Laptop Chromebook Edition
Christmas gifts for my parents. I've had them on Chromebooks for the last few years, and my father is a tinkerer (Western Electric in the 70s) who routinely opens up laptops, phones, cameras, etc. for repairs or just because.
rch··on Tell HN: Somebody implemented something I wrote a blog about
Opera also had tab groups, MRU tab switching, and saved sessions. Those exist in some form or fashion now, but the implementations are not as smooth.
