rbrcurtis··on Google isn’t the company that we should have handed the Web over to
Yes. But the Microsoft of today is a much different company than twenty years ago. They have completely different leadership. Is it fair to judge them still for then?

Are you committing your libs? If yes, you probably shouldn't. If no, then GitHub is only calculating your actual js LOC.

Always use a clean workspace.
rbrcurtis··on Javascript: call functions without using parentheses
I don't see how this is better than

var query = sql(`select * from user where id=${id}`);

rbrcurtis··on Apple now strives to design and build products that last as long as possible
iirc, icloud was written in sproutcore. version 2 of sproutcoure became ember which is now in version 3. there was no upgrade path from sproutcore 1 to ember, so likely its a case of needing a rewrite and that not being prioritized.
rbrcurtis··on Sperm Count Zero
What's curious about that is if this is solely a first world problem, then it should be easy to compare our sperm counts to that of men in 2nd/3rd world countries. The lack of that data in this article is troubling.
rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: Your subjective takes on living a non-boring and pleasant life?
I've always found this a strange statistic. My children bring me greater joy and satisfaction than anything else I've ever done in my life and my relationship with my wife has only strengthened.
rbrcurtis··on Evidence that drinking baking soda can promote an anti-inflammatory environment
Have you ever tried just chewing gum when you have reflux? From what I can tell it causes you to continuously generate and swallow saliva which keeps the reflux down until you've digested.

I have a heital hernia and this works well for me (and got my wife through some tough episodes during pregancy).

Only if you never listen to new music. CDs cost around $10, which is your Spotify sub cost per month. Imagine only listening to one new album every month.

rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: When do you sell your stock grants?
Yes but if they give you RSUs, which is probably the case in a publicly traded company, then typically >1/3rd are sold by etrade or whoever to pay those taxes. IE you don't really have to deal with this.

Now you DO have to worry about the taxes on capital gains. I recently had to deal with this because I sold my RSUs on the day they vested, thought the 3rd that auto-sold covered me, but didn't realize the .88 cents that the stock rose in the hour before I sold the stock qualified as cap gains and I needed to deal with declaring it. Short term cap gains in this situation basically is just your standard tax rate.

If you don't need the money and you think the company's stock is going to do decently over the next year then holding on to your shares for a year to get to long term cap gains isn't necessarily a bad idea. Depends on the company.

rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: How common is a counteroffer for developers who give notice?
Totally agree with this.

rbrcurtis··on Introducing Backup and Sync for Google Photos and Google Drive
Best I have figured out so far is owncloud plus resilio sync pro and then host it yourself. The former gives you Dropbox UI and apps and the latter gives you meta sync wherever you need it.
rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: How do I dress better?
My SVP wears ratty t-shirts from high school and cargo shorts. 5000 person organization. Your wardrobe is not necessarily a limiting factor. Attitude and confidence goes a lot farther.
rbrcurtis··on Some Google Pixel devices shutting down at 30% battery
FWIW, I have a iphone 7, and I use bluetooth literally all day listening to audio books. My battery doesn't really seem to be impacted significantly.
rbrcurtis··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
I do find it annoying that you can't use voice typing on 3rd party keyboards, but I use gboard for swipe typing and then will switch to the oem keyboard when voice typing. It's not perfect (because the kb switch button doesn't usually go the keyboard I want), but it does work ok.

FWIW, voice typing generally works well for me. Not sure why you're having so much trouble.

rbrcurtis··on Apple to slice iPhone production 10% due to sluggish sales
$2 per on ebay. Just throw 20 bucks at it and buy one for every pair you have.

They're about $2 per on ebay.
rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: Experiences with cloud-based dev platforms?
Are you using a VPS or what sort of dev machine are you using?
rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: Senior developers, what would you tell a younger you?
You will learn far more and work on more interesting things by doing side projects than you generally ever will at work. This will result in having a better resume and getting more interesting jobs as a result.
rbrcurtis··on I have no side code projects to show
http://www.shakelaw.com/blog/employee-inventions/

"For example, the California Labor Code stipulates that regardless of what an employment contract or PIIA says, an employee owns the copyright and patent rights to his inventions if the invention is made entirely on the employee’s own time, without using any of the company’s equipment or technology, as long as the invention (a) does not relate to the company’s business, or (b) did not result from work performed by the employee “as an employee” of the company. Washington state has a similar law protecting employee projects outside the 9-5 bounds."

This clause is illegal in many states. It definitively is in Wisconsin where I live, and I thought for sure it was illegal in California.

rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: How to transition from worker to manager?
Read this: https://www.nczonline.net/blog/2013/10/15/the-best-career-ad...

I took to heart one sentence from this blog post in particular: "I made sure I only went to meetings that needed me to participate and then I would participate." IE, if you aren't useful to the meeting in a major way, then don't go. That will likely free you up for other things.

rbrcurtis··on Ask HN: How to transition from worker to manager?
From a simple dollars and cents POV, the manager usually makes more money than any of their workers.
