In these days I’d as my friend Claude.

> It seems relevant to ask whether that incitement to respond to arguments with force is actually happening or not

I would say yes. Haven't we seen journalists being harassed for asking pointed questions, when this kind of harassment results in death threats?

rbanffy··on A brief history of the Bloomberg terminal
I would love to learn the specs of the original 1983 terminal. By the look of it, it's NTSC timings, so 200-ish lines, but it shows text and graphics, so it must have some bitmap capability. If I were to replicate the look, I'd use something that can display ReGIS or NAPLPS.

I have the highest regard for these terse, but information-dense displays that enable humans to quickly grasp all information they need to do their jobs, and nothing more. This is also something avionics provide - a modern cockpit displays are a work of art in layering needed information for what is happening at the time, both the dense PFD and the much specific that communicate aircraft status.

I believe you are observing Popper's Paradox of Tolerance. It is indeed the correct course of action to not tolerate those who do not tolerate people who don't "think, act, look, and live exactly like" them. The first group that does not tolerate others immediately justifies intolerance against them.
rbanffy··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
You can run Linux (and NetBSD, obviously) on a PS2.
rbanffy··on NASA has a Dragon dilemma, and there appear to be no good answers
That's not exactly surprising - SpaceX is cutting Falcon-9 launches to build up Superheavy and Starship capacity, and, by design, a launch escape system seems hard to add to Starship in its present form.

I suppose NASA can pay enough for each SpaceX seat to make it attractive for them to keep at least one pad for Falcon-9 and Dragons.

I think this might be good news to Sierra Space.

rbanffy··on Nuvacore's unconventional CPU strategy – delay ISA selection as long as possible
One thing that will affect the design of their back end is memory semantics - if they want it to be more relaxed, as it is with ARM, or if they want to make sure reads and writes go out in order, as is defined by x86.

BTW, since someone mentioned x86S (the "legacy-free" x86 ISA) the other day, I wonder if it changes the memory write ordering requirement.

rbanffy··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
OTOH, a pilot in their 70’s can be bold and still die of old age.
rbanffy··on Galaxy Game
Not running on original hardware though…

I’m sure it’ll tell you how to was a communist from the Netherlands.
rbanffy··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
The BC250 is interesting, but you need a PSU, a case with a fan and a fan duct to push air through the heat exchanger or something similar. A used PS5 already has all that, plus the nice feeling it’d annoy Sony.

Also, the square tower Xbox has similar specs, and who doesn’t like to extend a middle finger to Microsoft?

rbanffy··on PS5 Relapse Exploit
Is it practical/sensible to turn a PS5 into a general purpose computer? What are the specs?
rbanffy··on NASA asked several former SR-71A staffers to help secret restart
I wouldn’t mind, as long as the plane flies again.

It’s a true marvel of engineering.

I wish I could turn off empathy at my convenience.

I was hoping the numbers would make it obvious the reaction is disproportionate and careless with the lives of civilians.
rbanffy··on Booted up in 1993, this server still runs – but not for much longer (2017)
Most likely not directly connected. I'm assuming this one is doing process control and any internet access it might have must be mediated by other systems.
rbanffy··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
As Emiliano Zapata once said, "Better to die standing than to live on your knees".

While I don't condone violence, it's a legitimate way to defend against occupation.

rbanffy··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
You don't need to compare the military forces. You can compare the casualties on both sides or, for a different perspective, you might count the civilians killed inside their own territories (you might count the West Bank if you really want accurate numbers).

Forced displacement is also considered a war crime and, considering what is happening in Gaza and at the West Bank, it would qualify as genocide as well.

rbanffy··on Updated Google Maps shows destruction of the city of Rafah
A war requires at least two militaries. This is what happens when a well armed military engages a mostly unarmed civilian society unable to mount significant opposition.
rbanffy··on Alan Kay's answer to “Did the ENIAC have a BIOS”?
I don't remember any CP/M system with the BIOS part in ROM (and BDOS loaded from disk). It would be possible, of course, but every subsequent version of CP/M for that machine would need to be able to work with the "frozen" BIOS, and I'm not sure CP/M was designed thinking of mixing BIOS/BDOS versions.

Saying that, I think the Epson PX-4 and PX-8 had CP/M in ROM.

Having said that, Alan Kay has seen things we people wouldn't believe, so, if he says it happened, I'm betting on him.

rbanffy··on It's "Underwear on the Outside" Time
Communism is really a form of organising the economy, by making the means of production be controlled by the people (whether a direct or representative democracy with what kinds of checks and balances is not specified). It is perfectly possible to have a communist democracy.

Is there a betting market for that?
rbanffy··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
With adequate checks and balances, following laws approved by a democratically elected legislature, and when it's done to protect democracy and rule of law, then yes. If we can limit the reach of someone yelling "fire" in a crowded theater in order to cause a stampede and harming people, why not preventing the already yelled word from being heard by the crowd and cause the action to fail?

rbanffy··on Finally, A True Blue Rose Exists
I think it’s interesting they noted the flowers stopped making the new pigment in the wild after 3 years - is it a genetic treatment that requires repeated intervention to maintain the effect?

I’m also guessing the new genes don’t propagate to the seeds as well, so that they can have a steady demand for their special flowers.

I am sure the plan is to make J D Vance president with all these powers and perhaps more, so he can rule for the project 2025 crowd.

And right now the election court in Brazil is headed by two justices named by Jair Bolsonaro mostly for how loyal to him they’d be.
rbanffy··on Meta Blocks President Lula's Facebook Page, Campaign Ads 2 Weeks from Election
Did they anticipate there would be large numbers of attempts to report the page and cause it to be automatically flagged and/or blocked?

I am sure the American president is target for such efforts as well and provides ample material for rules violations.
