rationalist··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
Especially since populations are potentially in decline with fertility rates below replacement rates. It seems like an existential problem for the government if they want future taxpayers.
rationalist··on Singapore govt dating app uses Gale-Shapley stable marriage algorithm
I am interested in creating my own dating app/website, but the problem I foresee is getting users - a Catch 22 problem.

I would like to create a service that opperated like OkCupid used to before they sold out. Visible compatibility percentages and being able to search profiles. No curation/algorithms or swiping.

I'm interested in helping people, not taking their money.

The LED doesn't prevent the privacy invasion, it just notifies you of the privacy invasion… and only if you were looking at it.

The physical shutter that other manufacturers offer, is the superior solution.

steering wheel option

Amazing, thanks for sharing!

rationalist··on ChatGPT Pro 500
It makes it easier to change the plan features if the name is tied to the price and not the features.

So expect further downgrades in the plan features for the same price.

It's a weird-looking phone.

(Typed from my Pixel 9 Pro running GrapheneOS)

> we can't handwave like Q, "just change the gravitational constant of the universe."

We can't yet.

rationalist··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
In real life, malware turns the MacBook camera on and off so fast that the user doesn't even see the LED light up.
rationalist··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
Me too. Interestingly my card has only been fraudulently used after I gave it to a waiter at a high-end restaurant, and at a gas pump in a small town that didn't have tap-to-pay.

> This is also partially that people don't put critical bills on their credit card typically

This is probably atypical, as the average people I know put their critical bills on their main credit card that they use everywhere:

I put my autopay bills on a credit card that sits in my safe. The only reason it would see a fraudulent charge is if one of the few companies that has the card information, is hacked. And that actually happened once.

rationalist··on 'We hacked the FBI:' Hackers say they have data on all FBI employees
My bank just removes the charge if I say it is fraudulent. If I dispute a charge (I made a purchase but the other end didn't hold up their end), then my bank gives me a credit until the dispute is resolved.

Perhaps not everyone has a good credit card and/or bank though, idk.

rationalist··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
Should she have used her neural implant instead?

Maybe she didn't want to bother other people by talking out loud to her phone.

rationalist··on Study: Young users (9 to 18Y) ditch Google for AI, with unknown consequences
The Green Energy movement shouldn't have demeaned nuclear. I'm all for not polluting. It reminds me of other extremist groups today that are doing more harm than good about what they claim to care about...
rationalist··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
> The sport wouldn't be as popular or have as much funding.

The sport, or the franchise?

rationalist··on 9 Ads per Minute: FIFA Cup 26 – "the price of the beautiful game"
Yep. Every logo that is sewn onto my clothes, I remove with a razorblade before I wear them.

In the U.S., you can get a passport for a baby. In my state, you can get a state ID for your child.
rationalist··on Uber ordered to pay $40M over death of woman left on Southern California freeway
A) If someone acting on behalf of a company does something bad, the company is at fault.

B) Jury is going to Jury. I imagine Uber might offer to settle at a fraction of that for an immediate payout versus dragging it out with appeals to lower the amount etc. The family might take a smaller sum immediately, rather than an unknown sum years later.

rationalist··on Ask HN: How to recover Google auth after phone stolen?
Only if you can log in. I am Meta Verified, but I cannot log in to get support.
rationalist··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
They've been losing money on the $200/mo plan, so that's my guess.
rationalist··on GPT-5.6 Luna vs. GPT-6 Astra: Is a $1.20 Model Good Enough for Code Review?
Unfortunately ChatGPT just stopped allowing people to upgrade to the $200/mo subscription.

I started my first paid subscription ($100/mo) last week, and now I want to upgrade and I can't :-(

rationalist··on I spent $220 on Google app ads and 60% of the installs were robots
One reason: It helps makes the bot accounts look more legit. It's why Facebook bot accounts like random legit pages.

FYI anyone else reading this: acetone is too strong and eats away at the plastic.
rationalist··on Child Sexual Abuse Material Persists on X
TFA is paywalled and the archive link someone else used didn't work.

Thank you for copy-and-pasting how they did it.

rationalist··on Child Sexual Abuse Material Persists on X
It took me a bit to realize you mean "MAPs" (so-called "Minor Attracted Persons") and not cartographical instruments.
rationalist··on Child Sexual Abuse Material Persists on X
I'm surprised Twitter didn't implement it earlier (before it was bought and rebranded to X).

Also, is The Times admitting they were in possession of the illegal pictures? Does Freedom of the Press protect against that?

rationalist··on LibreOffice breaks download records after declaring it has no AI features
I'm not anti-AI (I have a ChatGPT subscription), I just don't like bloat and nagging.
rationalist··on LG TVs aren't the only ones spying on you [video]
Another user on HN that reported that their guest connected their TV to the guest's phone hotspot to watch Netflix.

So you have to go a step further and remove the Wi-Fi card, because there is no guarantee that someone else won't connect the TV to the Internet.

rationalist··on .name Termination
Maybe they wanted the Created Date for the domain to match the birth date.
rationalist··on How to debloat your Xiaomi 15 Ultra without root access
It says they're freezing at Android 16 because Android 17 has more tracking and that kind of stuff, but then they go on to recommend Nova Launcher which sold out and has ads and who knows what else?
rationalist··on Rakuten Kobo returns to U.S. retail as sales double
Maybe acetone on the Kobo, as it looks like it is printed directly onto the plastic, but for the Kindle, I think it was under the glass.
