rational-future··on Bantu expansion shows that habitat alters the route and pace of human dispersals
The trial in genetic programming is too random, compared to what a human researcher would try.
rational-future··on AWS US East is experiencing high error rates on several services
Why would you run a "critical payment application" in US East? This datacenter has 10x the downtime of West or Ireland.
rational-future··on How space travel became the unofficial religion of the USSR
Lucas did see a number of German and Soviet SciFi movies before making Star Wars. Some of the influence in costumes and space ships is quite obvious.
rational-future··on The Danger of Managing Drug Prices
That's an interesting argument, but it misses the fact that the US is effectively subsidizing the healthcare in the rest of the world.
rational-future··on The Debate Around “Do We Even Need CSS Anymore?”
You have NO idea what you're talking about.

>> JS have to be interpreted

Yeah, because the Bible, the Quaran and the Declaration of Independence say so ...

rational-future··on Did Lawrence doubt the bomb?
You are completely ignoring the other big reason for surrender - USSR declaration of war.
rational-future··on The Debate Around “Do We Even Need CSS Anymore?”
So many wrong statements.

The performance differences, between CSS styles applied from a JS file and a CSS file are very small on modern browsers, with JS being faster sometime.

JS files are cached.

Preprocessors are not fine, they complicate and slow down the development process.

Inlining CSS is not stupid, OP discusses the numerous advantages it brings...

rational-future··on U.S. honeybee colonies hit a 20-year high
>> addressing the underlying cause of the leak

There are problem causes that are very hard to address. E.g. alcohol consumption causing a lot of traffic accidents.

Or massive corporations, with huge lobbying budgets, releasing toxins in the environment. Toxins that cause no obvious harm, but kill a lot of bees or cause cancer in some humans after 20 years of exposure.

rational-future··on Music Programming for Java and JVM Languages
I thought, based on the title, this is something similar to Music to Code by - http://mtcb.pwop.com/
rational-future··on A Submerged Monolith Near Sicily: Evidence for Mesolithic Human Activity
I've done some diving in the Black Sea and have stumbled upon a number of structures that looked like human-made artifacts. They are near the shore lines as they were before the end of the last glacial period. I'm personally 99% sure there was a somewhat advanced civilization at that time.
rational-future··on Machine Learning: The High-Interest Credit Card of Technical Debt [pdf]
Is there a video online?
rational-future··on Cofactor Genomics (YC S15) Pursues RNA Testing, Offers Better Diagnoses Than DNA
or will patients have to go through evil health provider gatekeeping?

FTFY :)

rational-future··on Cofactor Genomics (YC S15) Pursues RNA Testing, Offers Better Diagnoses Than DNA
Hey Dave, how does RNA sequencing work for an individual customer? Do you plan to have something like the 23andMe collection kit?

In my understanding human cells have may different types of RNA, which one are you sequencing?

rational-future··on What DirectX 12 means for gamers and developers
Citation?
rational-future··on Is This the End for South Asia Shipbreakers?
>> And the second is the huge export boosts from China in iron and steel. (alleged in the article to be below cost but there wasn't really any support for that argument.)

It's just a well known fact. The major iron and steel mills have 100K or so employees each. They receive billions of $ subsidies annually to save those people from unemployment and potential social unrest.

rational-future··on Using Windows 10? Microsoft is watching
Do you recognize that someone needs to develop the sites that you consume?

The web server that comes with Windows 10 - IIS 10 is the first version of IIS to support HTTP/2.

rational-future··on Using Windows 10? Microsoft is watching
DirectX 10, HTTP/2, kernel improvements, etc.
rational-future··on What DirectX 12 means for gamers and developers
Not much. Almost all high-budget games are still developed for consoles first. The hardware inside Xbox One doesn't support DX 12.
rational-future··on Ask HN: How to deal with a hard to work with Start-up CEO?
Ask to be appointed CTO. If it goes through you'll have a lot more freedom, if not just quit.
rational-future··on How a keyboard changed what I look for in an editor
Sculpt Ergonomic Desktop sends all keystrokes over unencrypted WiFi.
rational-future··on Temporary fork enables Node.js to optionally use the Chakra JavaScript engine
With every new version of Windows, Explorer gets worse and worse. I personally switched to Directory Opus long time ago.
rational-future··on Temporary fork enables Node.js to optionally use the Chakra JavaScript engine
Will this work on Raspberry Pi?
rational-future··on Software and Mind: The Mechanistic Myth and Its Consequences
>> similar to how we would reject a conspiracy theory

I fully agree that this book is lacking in rational arguments. But I IMHO you are not using the phrase "conspiracy theory" correctly. There are a lot of conspiracies out there. E.g. the wage fixing between Google, Oracle and Microsoft is on the YHN front page today.

rational-future··on Socket.IO C++
Why not use SignalR?
rational-future··on On the Great Filter, existential threats, and griefers
If there are 1000000 million advanced civs in our galaxy and 999999 of them decided not to expand, the 1 remaining will still colonize everything in a million years.
rational-future··on On the Great Filter, existential threats, and griefers
This is not a theory, but a hypothesis. A small chance is never a good bet, especially when our whole race is at stake.
rational-future··on On the Great Filter, existential threats, and griefers
Not that big. Advanced technology, like replicators and a few million years are enough to reach galaxies far-far away.
rational-future··on On the Great Filter, existential threats, and griefers
Not much of a resolution. If our progress continues to accelerate with same rate as of the last 10K years, in 100K years we'll have the capability to change completely the structure of our galaxy. Why can't we see any such grand-scale projects from other civs?
rational-future··on Asteroid Database and Mining Rankings
Yes, because space rockets never blow up on take off or shortly after.
rational-future··on Stellar Consensus Protocol: Proof and Code
Well it's first and foremost a protocol. Feel officially invited to implement it in any language you like. Language correctness guaranties sounds to me as a term from MBA programs and business magazines and not something a REAL dev would EVER say.

I've been to at least 200 software conferences in my life and never heard speakers like Linus, Ken Thomson, RMS, Gordon Letwin, DHH, Anders Hejlsberg mention "correctness guarantees".
