rational-future··on Ask HN: Should I report my main competitor for PCI Violations?
Remember the people who send polite emails to their competitors never get to build empires like Microsoft, Apple, Google, Oracle or Amazon.
rational-future··on A relatively simple fix that could prevent planes from disappearing
Who is 'they'?

You don't even need Iridium, a shortwave radio transmitter will suffice.

rational-future··on Under the Hood with Java 10 Enhanced Generics
Yeah, but then it has also around 10K other features, most of which you don't need. Most Java developers won't be able to become Scala masters by 2018 anyway, if at all.

On the other hand C# has even better generics than this proposal, along with await, dynamic, yield. And it's now supported by MS and Xamarin on all big platforms.

rational-future··on Virgin births in animals are no longer rare
>> Yes, you are right that life originally started as asexual reproduction and sexual reproduction appeared later

No, that's a hot research topic.

E.g. a popular hypothesis is than in an RNA world very early and simple organisms had inefficient metabolism and error-prone genetic copy. They didn't have enough energy to sustain a backup of their genetic information, RNA is not very stable, etc. So the only way to keep functioning was to constantly mate with other organisms and exchange good replacements for broken genes.

rational-future··on Intel’s e-DRAM Shows Up in the Wild
You obviously are not familiar with the semiconductor industry. Binnig has nothing to do with price differences.
rational-future··on U.S. ends TARP with $15.3B profit
You are assuming the banks that sold had different owners than the banks that bought them.
rational-future··on U.S. ends TARP with $15.3B profit
The international banking system was the biggest threat to the freedoms of the colonies from before the Revolution until 1913. With the Federal Reserve Act of 1913 the banksters gained full control of the country ...
rational-future··on The underappreciated role of muscle in health and disease [pdf]
The problem with pills is not immediate efficiency, but keeping the weight after stopping the pills and side effects (such as increased probability of cancer, weakening of teeth, joints and bones, shortening of telomers).
rational-future··on The underappreciated role of muscle in health and disease [pdf]
Haha, 7Figures2Commas got pwned.
rational-future··on Julian Assange on Living in a Surveillance Society
Because all your "arguments" are extremely stupid. You're just trying to make stuff up, instead of saying "Hey, I was wrong".
rational-future··on Secret surveillance detected in Oslo
Well Russia hasn't annexed any whole countries either :)

Plus it's military is killing way less people, doesn't mass deploy depleted uranium weapons (as far as I know), isn't made of lunatic "Christian Knights", etc.

rational-future··on Secret surveillance detected in Oslo
Spot on. Many other reasons as well. There are powers that want to see Norway join the EU and adopt the euro. Norway is selling a lot of services (oil and gas related, software, electronic government, finance) to other countries. A run away global warming may turn it into a very important piece of land.
rational-future··on Secret surveillance detected in Oslo
Actually the CIA has an office in downtown Oslo, operating under the cover of Radio Bravo. Very well known in the Scandinavian security circles.
rational-future··on Secret surveillance detected in Oslo
Which is a very funny statement, if you take into account the dozens of countries the US has invaded in the last few decades.
rational-future··on Youtube-dl
Great job rg3, thank you very much for your work!

Do you think DRM support in browsers and major tube sites will soon prevent tools like youtube-dl from functioning?

rational-future··on Youtube-dl
That's right, usually the best quality audio you can get from youtube is in m4a format. The only problem I'm having is youtube sets the format inside the m4a to dash, which some stupid players (including iTunes) don't want to play. So I have to run something like

ffmpeg.exe -i "Keith Wiley - The Fermi Paradox, Self-Replicating Probes, Interstellar Transport Bandwidth-AUk6ZlePtQA.m4a" -c:a copy 2.m4a

to change the format in the file header to M4A.

rational-future··on Foobar
How is this going to help you? Would you be happy with a job you're not good enough to do properly?
rational-future··on Foobar
True. Also most islands are younger then life on Earth, so the island could just appear under the first guide.
rational-future··on Foobar
Only the very stupid are fine with Google recording everything they do.
rational-future··on In response to a blog post on Samsung Knox
I may be racist or something, but I don't trust software written outside of US, Europe and Australia. I know Samsung now has labs around the world, but the important decisions are still made in Seoul. In my humble experience those guys are never agile, never able to say "i was wrong", etc. That attitude works well for devices, based on other's designs (ARM, Google) but leads to really bad, insecure software.
rational-future··on Lawrence Lessig Interviews Edward Snowden [video]
Hah, I personally don't really believe this. There are so many things in US politics that are obviously corrupt (e.g. NSA and RSI deleting files before congress hearings). None of them generated a backlash significant enough to change anything.
rational-future··on In response to a blog post on Samsung Knox
Wasn't knox discontinued?
rational-future··on Chimpanzee Intelligence Is Heritable [pdf]
Why is that?
rational-future··on Chimpanzee Intelligence Is Heritable [pdf]
What is your time estimate for these prerequisites?
rational-future··on Chimpanzee Intelligence Is Heritable [pdf]
Very interesting arguments. That link is quite hard to understand. Is it saying that by throwing out embryos, until you hit a lucky, intelligent one, you can raise the average IQ to around 160?
rational-future··on Chimpanzee Intelligence Is Heritable [pdf]
Leads the conversation to many taboo topics around intelligence, e.g. racial differences.
rational-future··on AT&T Locks Apple SIM on Activation
The logic is that they have already lost the knowledgeable, price sensitive customers. Raising the rates would allow them to extract more value from the rest, e.g. old people.
rational-future··on Ask HN: How I can get out of a job that has me burned out and exhausted?
It really depends. E.g. if you're a rockstar dev, you can afford to piss whoever you want, as long as they deserve it. Making the right enemies is also a very important social skill.
rational-future··on Ask HN: What to do when your once potential competitor becomes a real competitor
FWIW I personally don't buy any products or services for my business, that are backed by a one man company. The risk that you may get sick or bored or bought out or hit by a bus, etc. is too high.

If you're not a sales ninja, you'll have to finish building the product, before you get any sales. Contact your competitor competitors, see if they'll be interested in cooperating.

rational-future··on Roman Gladiators ate a mostly vegetarian diet and drank a tonic of ashes
Not true, very small percentage of the fights ended with death.
